Good choice for a Tom Petty tribute, Jeff.

Jason Aldean (the country singer who was onstage when the shooting in Vegas started) chose to play "Won't Back Down" on Saturday Night Live as a kind of double tribute... i'm sure he meant well, but i couldn't help wondering: *who* won't back down, and from what? With "World War III" trending on Twitter right now, I'm wondering if that's a good song to be propagating in the national psyche (it was sung en masse in a stadium in Florida this weekend before a football game).

I'm not an big american football fan, but my brothers and my father got me tix to a Gators football game (I just moved to Gainesville, where Tom Petty is originally from), and on the loudspeakers and video screen, in the fourth quarter, they did Petty's, "Don't back down". Every one in the stadium sang it, (including me). 'tis was a nice gesture.

Thanks, Jennifer--that's what the archives are for! I'm puzzled why anyone would tune into a show that has been playing an hour of live Dead since I can remember just to troll the Dead and their fans. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to listen.

Mark R:

'76 was the year they did that one short 10-city tour or something, right? I saw their show in Detroit that year.
  2:39am
Mark R:

Curiosity got the better of me, so I googled it--the Dead did indeed do a 9-city "East Coast" Fall tour that ended in Detroit 10/3/76, a Sunday night. I was there. They also played some East Coast shows that summer, and a tiny handful of West Coast shows later in the year, but it wasn't their usual heavy touring schedule. They were just getting their legs back after an 18-month "retirement," as I recall.
