This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello hello comrade David D.!

And hello Dean! No Maggi Payne tonight, but she's in the runnings for a future show; I'll do at least one more in this series

I think I remember that, Hyde! And hello to you!

Hey, David, recovered from your marathon Tuesday yet? Got to hear the beginning and the end (was nice that it was still on when I was driving back from Manhatten about 10PM, at least for me...)
Avatar 7:08pm

Hi Geezerette! Pith helmets still welcome, btw. Always welcome in this room. I do wish we were all taking our seats in a planetarium right now
Avatar 7:12pm
Flash Strap:

wish I caught that Tuesday, David! Alas I was driving back from the NC mountains where I went to see the eclipse. Managed to see totality, which was a high point of my life. Anybody else see that? how was everyone's eclipse?

Love all of Emerald Web's stuff, but Valley of the Birds is probably my favorite album of theirs
  7:16pm
Dean:

Maybe this doesn't count, but Marina del Rey, who played keyboards for Vivabeat, might be a candidate. Her background was more punk/pop than techno, for sure. Great interview here: http://alicebag.com/women-in-la-punk/2016/4/16/marina-del-ray That photo of Backstage Pass standing beneath the Starwood marquee: I'm pretty sure that's the Hawkwind show I saw there.

@Doctorjazz: Thanks, it was a lot of fun - no need to recover (much). Glad you could catch the overtime. How was your evening in Manhattan?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
David D:

@Flash Strap: Glad you managed to catch the eclipse - it must have been quite a sight! We had one here a while back but it was too cloudy to really see much.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
doctorjazz:

Had fun; my wife is a Broadway show fanatic, we went to see Hello Dolly for her birthday (it was great; I didn't start out liking Broadway, but I've acquired the taste over the years...)
Avatar 7:33pm
Flash Strap:

@DD: it was cloudy where I was - that part of the NC mountains is actually a rainforest - but I managed to drive around until i caught a clear sky and at that moment totality commenced. it was utterly religious

@Dean: I'll look into that, I think I have some of her stuff but i'm not very familiar with it
  7:36pm
Dean:

Vivabeat's brush with fame was finding an advocate at the time in Peter Gabriel.
Avatar 7:37pm
Flash Strap:

Notes on this record: Composed 1974-76 using a computer playing the actual sounds by controlling analog synthesis equipment using the GROOVE (Generating Realtime Operations On Voltage-controlled Equipment) hybrid system which was developed by Max Matthews and F.R. Moore at Bell labs. Interaction with the computer was through a keyboard, a drawing tablet, pushbuttons and knobs, as well as complex "algorhythms" written in FORTRAN.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
David D:

@Evan: Perseverance paid off - glad you managed it!
Avatar 7:43pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks DD! it was sublime, in the truest sense of the word
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
doctorjazz:

Missed the eclipse, had to work, also was suffering from overdose of Totality Hype.
I'm sure if you had the Total version (NY area about 70%) it must have been something to see.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
David D:

@Doc: I get where you're coming from - I mean there is a wide range within the musical genre, from the ridiculous to the sublime, I suppose.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
David D:

And now I read the word sublime again - it must be the music influencing us.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
David D:

(subliminally)
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, it was really cool before totality (I thought it was really cool anyway) but the moment of totality was different, it was like an apocalyptic vision
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

so this track is a little later, working with different equipment, getting a bit of a different sound
Avatar 7:50pm
hyde:

heh, i am with doctorjazz on eclipse. was at work, the three quarters NY thing was not that exciting. i did go out and look at the weird tree shadows, which was cool.

I'll lament again that I had a 70s sequencing gizmo called The Muse, purchased about 1976 or '77 from a place that sold discounted salvage and close-out goods and unusual items, but a few years later I sold it. Such a fun and sometimes useful curiosity it would be if I'd held onto it. Here's one of the same li'l rascals:

i knew 2 people who worked at bell labs. one was a major player in the development of fiber optics. they imported him from australia to work for them.
the other grew the most perfect crystals (for whatever purpose they wanted her to grow crystals) with her work partner. they tried to teach others to do it but no one else ever grew them as well. after a few life-threatening chemical spills there, she quit to work at a garden nursery (her true passion) for much smaller wages.

But she knew when to ask: "Okay, what exactly are you going with this one? How many continuous hours in the studio had you spent, when you were doing the final mix?"

That's because too much continuous time can fatigue sensitivity. Also, I mostly did not compose with a set form in mind and sometimes a piece would emerge with form unconsciously and other times, what I ended up with was kind of an audio mess.

Pretty sure I'll come in on time LD, but major thanks for the consideration

in case I was at all hard to hear, this is the abridged notes that I just read concerning this piece:

About Bye Bye Butterfly Oliveros writes: “This work is a two-channel tape composition (with an enclosure) made at the San Francisco Tape Music center in 1965. It utilizes two Hewlett-Packard oscillators, two line amplifiers in cascade, one turntable with record, and two tape recorders in a delay setup. The composer arranged the equipment, tuned the oscillators, and played through the composition in real time.”

Though certainly not pre-planned by the composer, this fine, improvised musical gem, composed by an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, symbolically bids farewell not only to the music of the nineteenth century but also to the system of polite morality of that age and its attendant institutionalized oppression of the female sex. The title refers to the operatic disk which was at hand in the studio at the time and which was incorporated into the ongoing compositional mix.

i mean MY GOD

BYE BYE BUTTERFLY

Madame Butterfly is so ripe for this sort of thing, which reminds me to say that Cronenberg's M. Butterfly is a pretty devastating deconstruction of Madame Butterfly's tropes

New Music for Electronic and Recorded Media was reissued with a new name "Women in Electronic Music: 1977". (New World Records) The fact that the original title didn't mention that all the pieces were by women was a really bold statement. I have two of those original LPs for some reason - probably a good one!

@WH: indeed it was, I always thought it was sort of a copout when they rereleased it with the new title. The original liner notes make mention of it, very eloquently. It was such a cool, meaningful release. The first for Laurie Anderson and so many others on there... really cool you have the original. REALLY cool
