It's a shame that there aren't legally live cd's that comprise Ash Ra Tempel's 71-72 period-----totally at their best then.

There were probably 100 people in the Boston Garden crowd in '90 when Sonic Youth went on opening for Neil. They were all SY fans, including me. About half the crowd was there for SD, and they all dug SD. Neil blew the roof off that night.

That's an amazing mental picture (camping scene), but terrrifying nonetheless. Glad you're still with us!

Had the same bear experience up in Yosemite about 15 years ago. Not fun...Hey Jeff if you can put up one of your "Bring Out Your Dead" shows. Never got to hear it and would love to. Have you heard the new Dave's Picks from '78? Pretty incredible.
Avatar 1:09am
Johnny Sal:

I've had to wash my tshirt 3 times already. It's done its job quite well of completely baffling everyone who's bothered to look at it.
Avatar 1:09am

@Sam: Yes I will eventually. I thought i had one on Soundcloud but i guess i took it down.

why dont other radio stations play grateful dead
Avatar 1:11am
Jeff Conklin:

@Johnny: Yes!!

Re: New Dave's Picks: I like that show a lot. Still have a tape of it somewhere. The Close Encounters jam into Stephen is sweet. Wouldn't even be in my top 5 picks of 78 though, I feel the Spring run through the south was incredible and the Dartmouth show from May all beat it...

Regret not seeing Sonic Youth opening for Neil back in 1990. I don't even remember what my excuse was. Heard it was a good time. Maybe not for the older Neil Young fans.
  1:35am
J:

Jesus, that sounds terrifying. The bear story, not SY opening for Neil, though that doesn't sound pleasant either.
  1:39am
sam:

People coming out for Neil in '90 knew they were going to get a lot of feedback/noise in the mix, and those that showed up for SY(at least in the Garden) knew who they were and dug them. That was also when SY were at their more tuneful. They played a fairly short set, and as I said those relative few that were there liked them. But then again, that was in Boston, which is quite a bit different then seeing the same show somewhere in the Midwest or South, I would imagine.

Thee dead is represented upstate on wgxc...no much but I do my part...heard a jerry tribute show once where the DJ gave a disclaimer not to like thee dead but play 2&1/2 hours of dead.pretentious hipster prick no wonder jerry was bummed!
  1:48am
J:

Yeah I remember the tour. Story I always heard was that Neil was the one that asked them to leave the tour. Makes sense on paper, but 1990 was a tough year to try to pull that off. 94 and it would have been the tour of the year.

Thanks for the groovy jams for my drive in, man.

This is such a good Morning Dew. Been pretty burned out on the Dead after all the summer tour hoopla (no comment), then I hear one of these... sublime.
