Health care? I haven't seen a doctor in 7 years. (when I had health insurance, I couldn't take time off to see a doctor b/c of work, now I can't afford to).

Insurance paying 1/2 of $1,000s I don't have doesn't help me. Who wants a bunch of healthy peasants complicating our Rule...
Yay for the extraordinary Anthony Braxton.

fred:

Of course you're right, NGH, we would still be far from how terrible health care is in the US. I mean, when I had heart surgery last year, I paid nothing. It is possible, but it basically takes single-payer, which isn't looking likely in your country. Chances are we won't have it for long here, actually. Too much money to be made
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am
northguineahills:

I dislocated my toe volunteering at a food bank (Schlepping 40 lb boxes made me realize I'm not as spry as I used to be, being in my early 40s). I waited a week for the swelling to go down (and got anti-inflammatories from friends) and put it back in joint myself. I should be back to normal in two weeks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am

To be honest, outside of getting a prescription for the swelling, I'd probably would have done the same w/ insurance. I can tell it isn't broken, and I can judge how to put my bones back into joint better then someone else just based on the pain threshold (I've done it before when I was youthier)

Avatar 10:25am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think of Braxton - being so to speak 90% uninformed, you understand - as this potentate processor of Theory. Like he's aware of where everyone else was coming from - Ornette, Cecil, Stravinsky, &tc. - & presenting conclusions about it all to us. There's a Mathematical element - the highest abstraction of thinking - but it's good fun as well, sure. It's never less than interesting or engaging - altho' I sometimes think he's stating things repeatedly to make sure we get it - or probably just to explore every little bit of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
Jeff Golick:

Well put, @RRN63. The "good fun" aspect is not to be overlooked; he's got a great sense of humor.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am

Sorry, just my rambling, @coel: Jeff J and I saw Cecil Taylor at the Iridium a while back, and watched as unsuspecting club-goers wandered back out, up into the Times Square glare.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:46am

Tom Johnson is a composer, more of the contemporary classical bend. He often explores combinations in a systematic, mathematical way, but it sounds good. His Galileo is really fun to watch: www.youtube.com...

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:47am

What's interesting to me is that the main criticism is Braxton was always that he was "too clinical," "too abstract ", too "Western"...nothing we've heard is anything like that. I think the titles, with their symbols and numbers, poor people of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am

i love the idea of an avant venue in Times Square. body-painted ladies posing for snaps, Guy Fieri's restaurant, and... Cecil Taylor

Archie Shepp is an interesting character to me. I first heard him live, because he's a fixture in Paris. I found him pretty boring. Then I came upon his earlier records, and loved most of them. What went wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am
Jeff Golick:

Hard to say, @fred, but I had the exact same experience. Saw him live (in the 1990s, I think, also with Jeff J) and it was terrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am

His stuff on Impulse, though, from the 1960s/early 1970s is peerless.

How big is this band (hard to tell, the quartet/quintet sounded much bigger to me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
Jeff Golick:

Sooo for this Echo Echo Mirror House concept, which Braxton has been pursuing in recent years (there's at least one other release by the same name, on his own label), the performers are equipped with iPods featuring Braxton music, which they can play/deploy at various times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:22am

This is indeed pretty cool. Makes me want to lobby for a residency at work, though I have no voice and Braxton probably wouldn't be interested. Anyway I'm focused on Daniel Menche, and that's such a long shot I can't get distracted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Jeff Golick:

Training going pretty well, @doctorjazz, though there is still destruction. Louie seems to have it in for bags with straps. Not a fan of straps, it seems. Our big goal: getting recall down (i.e., "Come!") so that we can take him to Prospect Park and let him off-leash. A long-term project.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Jeff Golick:

@fred: Menche, another new name to me. What org/theatre do you work for?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Jeff Golick:

FYI: “My hope is to create a holistic music that respects body, mind, known, unknown and intuition,” says Braxton. “My interest in creative music is not just simply an existential interest in looking at sound, but rather I agree with the aesthetic of the AACM and Muhal Richard Abrams when he talked of the first challenge for the creative artist is to deal with his or her self, the idea of self-realization.”

When I think of IRCAM I think of Boulez, who directed(?) it or some program thereof once upon a time. And when I think of Victo I think of ... asbestos! Why? Because the Quebecois town of Asbestos is nearby. During a trip I bought a postcard promoting Asbestos. It featured two or three young girls playing clarinets, which set up a perfect joke about inhaling carcinogens.

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:37am

@Dean: it's affiliated to it, but the relationship is strained.
@Jeff: Now it's OK, but for years IRCAM and GRM were bitter rivals, mainly because Boulez despised GRM and what they were doing
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:39am

@Dean: Boulez founded it and directed it for years. It's been a while, though
  11:39am
Dean:

I mean "joke" in the darkest of senses.

Yep, @doctorjazz. I've progressed through two disks. Had no opportunity last night, because we went to friends' house. The sound is quite good due to the 2016 remastering. One caveat: if you thought you'd acquire previously unreleased material, as I kinda sorta did, it turns out those tracks were pr. un. *on CD*. Nothing formerly unavailable on LP.

Mary Halvorson's guitar sound: so instantly recognizable.
