Evan Doorbell  QC514-285ESS1   Favoriting     1974  This is a #1 ESS in downtown Montreal, featuring the Canadian "Pre- 'Dial Tone First'" arrangement, which was implemented on blue Northern Centurion coin phones. I don't know whether this was a "semi-DTF" arrangement or a crude temporary DTF arrangement which allowed things like "0" to be dialed without a coin.

@Dave, yeah that's a great episode. I love these tapes, if you want more, Evan has hundreds if not more hours of recordings of the phone systems of the 70's and 80's here: www.evan-doorbell.com

It's just amazing how much of the inner workings of the telecom system were relatively open and available, via technical journals, for so long.

The range of tech being discussed! Hearing mercury switches earlier blew my mind. Just what you want in a workplace, a heavy metal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I highly recommend the HOPE conference, every other summer in NYC. Always lots of us* old phone phreakers there, and always some talks/presentations/demos on the subject. *of course I've never actually done this

As someone who all but sprinted home w/ his first smartphone so he could put a Conet numbers tone on it as the ringtone, I declare tonight's exploration into electronic mystery utterly riveting.

I keep thinking about the bit of electronic chatter the probe droid emits in "The Empire Strikes Back."

"But it won't be around long." (looks at smartphone) Ain't that the truth?
