Had the same thought... At least messy. Love that old gospel with slide guitar, though.

A couple days ago I received my new Microscopic Septet cd! Yeah! Along with it I got a Joel Forrester Trio and Phillip Johnston film score cd that I didn't have (it was a Kickstarter, the second time I done a Micro Kickstarter thing. I like Kickstarter muchly!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am
Jeff Golick:

It does, though the message -- hide me in safety until trouble passes -- still resonates. We may all want/need to be hidden/protected by something, even if not...blood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am
Jeff Golick:

Well done, @Scraps.

Hey, @Scraps, got the same Kickstarter! I got Joel Forrester and the Truth, Furtive Sex (which I really like( and Phillip Johnston's Page of Madness, which I haven't heard yet.

Friday night got to hear a ne Dave Douglas band, Dada People, in Philly, who were really great, and got their CD at the show. Douglas always puts together music/bands with interesting concepts, this one a tribute to Man Ray (not terribly well attended show, though, sad...)

@Jeff agree that message resonates. I tuned in after the fact and missed the actual song.

I had to google clay-bar, @UM. I would also agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am

Haven't played the cd yet (got it at the show), but at the show the music was fine. Douglas is such a presence and a player! It may not transfer over to the recorded version, I'll check it out soon.

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:29am

I had to Google Xylouris White and clay-bar, didn't know about either. Don't think Clay-bar is in my future, though Xylouris White sounds interesting.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am
Jeff Golick:

Re seeing live music, I'm not sure which is more difficult: living in a place off of the main stem, making it hard to catch certain acts live; or living in, e.g., NYC, and missing everything that does come to town, and feeling semi-constant regret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that was quite a trip, @Dave. Though I had to cut out early...

No, UM just lost track of time wandering around without anxiety and regret.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am
melinda:

78 is today's high here, which seems too hot for April. But then it's supposed to get cold again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
melinda:

I think I prefer living in a town that gets some good musical acts but not everything.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:46am
doctorjazz:

(but it's SO MUCH EASIER to get to what you want to see in Philly-had to drive an hour and a half, but then parked RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE VENUE-PAINTED BRIDE-IN 5 MINUTES. And, while the show wasn't dirt cheap, came to much less than most Manhattan outings in the end...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I get that, @melinda. More of a sense of occasion, perhaps, when someone you dig comes to town. You're in one of the Carolinas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am
melinda:

I'm in Portland, Maine. I've noticed that North Carolina gets some acts I wish would come here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: have done the Philadelphia-for-music run, but not in a long while. Indeed, many things are easier when you leave NYC & environs. Parking, to name one.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:53am
doctorjazz:

The Minute the horns came in, I know it was Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim (of course, I have this, but haven't heard it in a long time).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
Jeff Golick:

Ah, Vacationland! That would explain the "get colder again" bit. Maine in summer = wonderful. Maine in winter...less so.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:55am
doctorjazz:

He's playing with Hugh Masekela, the Jazz Epistles, at Town Hall, soon, but it's a day that doesn't work for me, darn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am
Jeff Golick:

This large band line-up is completely bananas: Hamiet Bluiett, baritone saxophone; Sonny Fortune & Carlos Ward, flute & alto saxophone; Roland Alexander, harmonium & tenor saxophone; John Stubblefield, tenor saxophone; Kiani Zawadi, trombone; Cecil Bridgewater, Charles Sullivan, & Enrico Rava, trumpets; Cecil McBee, bass; Roy Brooks, percussion.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:00am
doctorjazz:

(from when Dollar Brand thought he was a free jazz player...though even then, the compositions tended to sound South Africa/folksy.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am
Jeff Golick:

I think we've reached cruising altitude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am
melinda:

I think I would be ok with winter if I didn't have to deal with snow removal (and for much of my time up here in the north I didn't). I like all seasons in the right proportions.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:02am
doctorjazz:

Quite a line up indeed-Carlos Ward would stay with him for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am

My big problem with winter nowadays is the darkness. Dark when I get up; dark again by late afternoon. In other words, I curse the darkness.

I always loved the music on those old Dollar Brand recordings, the recordings/sound quality, not so much...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:16am
doctorjazz:

This icp orchestra is a great follow up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @doc, I wasn't sure if that compression was due to my bad rip (I have the CD around here somewhere); bad CD transfer; or bad original recording.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:21am
doctorjazz:

I think it is the original recording, I have it in vinyl from the original issue, and it sounded that way to me right when I bought it (and I wasn't much concerned with audio/sound quality back then)

Yeah. Funny, though, as I would think only those interested in the record would bother to mess with the discogs tagging.

I can relate to that.

Same goes for recordings of Charpentier's "Leçons de ténèbres." Hat hut complicates the problem with their reissues featuring different covers, never mind the house style that renders every cover very similar to others from the same era.

I'm aware of the Sun Ra reissue of "Sunrise in Different Dimensions," which drops one track from the 2-LP set due to the limitations of CD capacity. There are others?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Jeff Golick:

The hat Steve Lacy permutations are pretty difficult to follow (as per usual).
  11:43am

Also, had one of the original releases of Tapscott's "Dark Tree," could never find the companion volume, so I ended up getting the 2-CD reissue. And then there's Myra Melford's "Live in the House of Saints," the first issue of which I acquired early on. Then appears a reissue with extra tracks, so I had to get that, too!
