...using my larger better speakers (Mac into the stereo not desktop speakers) - big difference this program!

Listener Robert:

The John Cage piece sounded like an ad for some gastro-intestinal distress medicine.

Dan Bodah:

@LL, glad to hear it! Hope you're not housebound long. @RR, yes, I always love doing the show bc I can crank these songs on the station's excellent speakers. @Rob't, you didn't hear the "plop plop fizz fizz" part in there?
Avatar 7:40pm
Linda Lee:

Cage would have loved that comment. you were listening!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right - 'Audition' - the conditions & act of Listening - regardless of conditioned context.

Listener Robert:

I know, Cage did expect some of his pieces to get laughs.
Avatar 7:45pm
Linda Lee:

right.
a friend of mine knew Cage back in the early 60s & remembered hearing him describe the first recital of one of his works in Europe. the audience responded by throwing garbage. he was thrilled! they were paying attention!

Ken From Hyde Park:

Opera singers hitting the highest or lowest notes. Would that go in the fryer?
Avatar 7:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cage took his ideas seriously - but he's often pictured laughing. Like they do in Zen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Dan Bodah:

@Rob't, yes, extreme vocal range is a VF thing.

Dan Bodah:

I meant @Ken! Sorry
Avatar 7:48pm
Linda Lee:

he was basically a joyful person. always with a 'twnkle in his eye', which made him very attractive company. adventurous in his experiences. open. & wished to inspire openness in others.
Avatar 7:49pm
Linda Lee:

he had amazing generosity of spirit.

A John Cage quote, applicable in these times or any: "I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones."
Avatar 7:56pm
Linda Lee:

good one Ken!
Cage stayed in the Catskills for a while, near Stone Ridge ~ in a structure made of cardboard!
Avatar 7:58pm
Linda Lee:

he visited the house i'm living in a few times back then.
