Love this one, LD

That was a sublime edition of the Explorer's Room, Flash!

hello! i'm afeared i can only stay this week even less time than usual. but i'm here now and, in some sense, will be here later
Avatar 10:05pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks Danny. You spoil me with kind words my friend. If you're not careful you might improve my self esteem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm

Delighted to bend yer ear for even a minute Hyde!

so cool to hear these quiet village bits repurposed
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
JtotheK:

hello everyone -- Flash, I caught the first 1/2 of your program, have to check out the rest via archives - some really great tunes!
Avatar 10:12pm
Flash Strap:

Thanks JK!

LD: so cool to hear Denny himself describe basically just exactly how exotica works. what a find, man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Little Danny:

Greetings J2tK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Little Danny:

@Flash, "Quiet Village" got repurposed by several different R&B and surf acts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Little Danny:

I know, I love how Denny builds out that tone poem motif by motif
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
JtotheK:

had to google 'crown zellerbach'. always learning thanks to WFMU...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Little Danny:

wtf is the "soft life"
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
JtotheK:

excellent question. speaking of Twin Peaks -- I finished 'The Secret History of Twin Peaks' book a few weeks ago. Worth a read!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
JtotheK:

Now, have to re-watch the show to prep for the new season...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Little Danny:

When exactly is the new season scheduled to appear? And are you nervous about it like me?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
JtotheK:

not sure what the air date will end up being...
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
JtotheK:

nervous... a bit, i suppose. i didn't see the show when it aired originally, watched it when the dvd's came out. (and the movie on dvd.)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
melinda:

nice sounds.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
JtotheK:

so i don't have 20+ years of build up to live up to, only 10-ish years of expectations. ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm

Hi Melinda, and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Yeah I'm in the same boat J2tK

Hello coelacanth! I do too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Dano59:

ipod set to WFMU app and wired into the stereo. Tuned in, in more ways than one. Love Arthur Lyman, M. Denny like crazy, and played a jimmy Scott Fire Walk With Me track on my own show last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Dano! God I love the Fire Walk... soundtrack and that Scott track in particular

Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
JtotheK:

was mentioning on Explorer's Room board that i tend to listen to 50s/60s jazz during the winter time... was thinking of spinning 'Mambo with Tjader' around the house this weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

Scraps! I dig your new assumed surname
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Little Danny:

Yeah, totally, j2tk. Cal Tjader's early stuff is so warm. Maybe it just makes me imagine some cozy nightclub
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
JtotheK:

tjader's 'tjader plays afro-cuban' 10" is a good one, too. you're right - any of his early stuff is worth a listen.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
melinda:

I like melancholy folk/folk rock during the winter months.
Avatar 10:57pm
geezerette:

This set is so moody and rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Little Danny:

I dig where you're coming from Melinda. Any particular artists/titles you'd recommend?
Avatar 10:58pm
Flash Strap:

I'm sort of away from the comments, LD, but all-in on the tunes. This show's been great, great, grand
Avatar 10:59pm
geezerette:

melinda, same here. And blues, jazz...
Avatar 11:03pm
still b/p:

Enjoying all this -- and a star-click for Senor Blues was irresistible.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
melinda:

@Danny: I like Fairport Convention's self-titled album. Bridget St. John. Judee Sill. Also, I find a lot of new-to-me 'loner folk' on Micah's show, Fridays at 9 am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Little Danny:

Thanks, and oh man, Bridget St. John. Such a favorite. One of the most beautiful voices in UK folk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Little Danny:

Evenin' still b/p! You have excellent proper tastes
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
melinda:

There's a nice 3-CD set that came out this year or last called Dust on the Nettles: a Journey Through the British Underground Folk Scene 1967-72.
  11:11pm
Dean:

Did you see my earlier message today about Dust on the Nettles to you, melinda?
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
melinda:

No, not today. Were you the one who discovered a 4-disc set?
  11:13pm
Dean:

I didn't discover one. I found evidence of one, but it turns out there was never a fourth disc. Cherry Red confirms it has always been three. My suspicion is that the site where I saw the reference (inc. a track list!) was bootlegging it.
  11:13pm
Dean:

Thus, I ordered my copy direct from them today!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
melinda:

Interesting. At least now we know we're not missing out! I ordered direct from them too.
Avatar 11:16pm
geezerette:

nice!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
melinda:

I also like melancholy film scores in winter. Thanks to WFMU I learned about Tariverdiev and got the box set of his works that came out recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Little Danny:

Thanks for the tip on Nettles, Melinda! It's new to me.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
melinda:

This is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Little Danny:

Ah, geezerette! So glad you're here
  11:19pm
Dean:

I confess, I am now playing a CD on the home system to lull my kids to sleep. It is Jordi Savall's recital of John Dowland's Lacrimae. If you're melancholy, it'll do ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Little Danny:

Thanks, Melinda - it's a 45 I picked up quite recently. Don't know anything about it except that the address listed on the label is Birmingham, Michigan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Little Danny:

Got some Bridget St. John lined up for you Melinda
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
melinda:

Ah, Chelsea Girl is also a cold weather favorite album. Thanks for all the folky stuff!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
melinda:

There was some discussion on another comment board recently about the similarity between Bridget and Nico.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
coelacanth∅:

funny, melinda - i was reading an email about that Nico discussion just now as this song started.
Avatar 11:25pm
geezerette:

Love Nico. A hot mug of tea with a drop of rum would be lovely too, might do that.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
JtotheK:

gonna catch the rest via archives -- thanks for the tunes, Danny - enjoyed them! good night everyone.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth∅:

- i guess i can say i really Love SOME Nico.
-3 of her albums, i think.
Avatar 11:27pm
geezerette:

stay warm,JtotheK.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
coelacanth∅:

gnight JK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Little Danny:

@J2tK, thanks for the ears - g'night!
Avatar 11:29pm
geezerette:

hi coel, don't have her albums apart from VU, but whenever I hear her I listen.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
melinda:

This is really nice.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

ah this album.
Avatar 11:34pm
geezerette:

melinda, I remember the discussion began with similarity between Bridget St. John & Nico. How funny.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
melinda:

What a great title for a compilation!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth∅:

g, i have a few, and i've heard the rest...doesn't make me qualified, but i like marble index, desertshore, and chelsie girls - probably in that order.
her singing is the least off-key on those and the influence of John Cale and of Tom Wilson are most apparent on those, which is a good thing.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
coelacanth∅:

(damn i keep misspelling "chelsea" and saying "girls")
Avatar 11:39pm
geezerette:

Great info coel! thank you!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
coelacanth∅:

(i'd lend you my cds and vinyl, except for the 3000 miles apart thing.)
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
melinda:

@coel: I don't know the other albums but yeah, the producer/musicians for Chelsea Girl really made a difference. I like the alternate chelsie spelling. I didn't know anything about Tom Wilson until Irwin started playing his shows.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
coelacanth∅:

i knew his basic story, read many liner notes he made; but never heard those shows. they're pretty amazing.
- what a cool guy.
Avatar 11:42pm
geezerette:

we all need teleportation.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
coelacanth∅:

loving this set Danny.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
melinda:

I probably have some albums with his liner notes but my turntable has been in a box under a bunch of stuff for the last 13 years, so I haven't been reading album covers for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Little Danny:

Thanks Coel!
Avatar 11:46pm
geezerette:

Danny, loved the early winter mood.
Good night all.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
coelacanth∅:

this is how smart i am... when i was little and i'd read liner notes by Tom Wilson, i always assumed it was Brian and Dennis Wilson's father!
- and when i read liner notes by Ralph Gleason always got him confused with Jackie Gleason!
DUH!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
coelacanth∅:

oh, goodnight g.
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
melinda:

Time to hit the sack. Thanks for the tunes, Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Little Danny:

G'night Melinda - thanks for inspiring my folk/folk-rock set!
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
coelacanth∅:

'night melinda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Little Danny:

Thanks as always geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm

still here, listening, relaxing, exotically. Velvet cushions, the whole bit. (no animal prints, though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
Little Danny:

That is a perfect vision Dano
Avatar 🦭 Swag For Life Member 12:02am
coelacanth∅:

Excellent program Danny!
Thanks.
good night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am
