I could see it taking over my life. First organizing the living room around it (i.e., shuffling milk crates and battered IKEA particleboard) but, before you knew it, I'd be talking to it (especially that bearpig with a human right foot and dope cloak) and refusing to let it out of my sight.

Thank you for sharing.

The lovely phrase:

and the words
"A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage" from Rush, The Anarchist.

(i was away for a minute and i apologise...) Mitch Mitchell is the {obvious!} best "rock" drummer...but i cannot think who Irwin's best is.
...Mick Fleetwood was extraordinary, for being barely recognised as such. Simon Kirk, same...
- John Bonham?
(i wouldn't think an excellent drummer in the jazz field, such as Irwin, would say Ginger Baker or Keith Moon, right?)

Bonzo is tops. After seeing his 20-minute solo in the video of How the West Was Won, I was exhausted and convinced. His performance was conclusive. But I would've liked to see a drum battle between Bonham and Blakey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
Irwin:

I say that as someone who has never owned a single LZ album. Can't stand Plant's vocal histrionics. If only Terry Reid had gotten that gig.

I saw Aynsley Dunbar perform a long over-the-top solo as part of the original Journey, and was eventually booed off. They were opening for ELP. The sheer audacity of the man was worth the watch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
Irwin:

Bonzo could do it all, as he proved in that showcase. Backing the band, he was limited to the song structures. But turned loose ...

And Billy Cobham?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm

Cobham, another virtuoso. Ditto Jack DeJohnette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
coelacanth:

as someone who owns every lz album, i think, (but only ever listens to II, III and 2-3 tracks off the 4th) i also dislike Plant's vocals. (& i love Terry Reid)
...and that duet would be pretty phenomenal.
Avatar 5:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bonzo had Funk, Power (bare hands if he had to), & the Sound everyone wants.
Moon had Expression
- & broke thru for Rawk Drumming for all who followed...
I want to know more about Aynsley: he played w/ Zappa - & a few have suggested he shoulda replaced Moon in TheWho (?)...altho' I'm kinda allergic to Journey...
& Billy Cobham. Yes please.

I saw Dunbar with Zappa. Im not usually one for drum solos but he turned in the best I've ever experienced. Certainly would have been better than other substitutes but remember Townshend was already getting away from that drum driven sound. The synths had paid off big.
