I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon, james! Thank you for tuning in!

No holiday shopping for me. Malls horrify me this time of year. Happier to proofread and listen to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
listener james from westwood:

Malls actually horrify me on non-holiday occasions, too. I like busy casinos but hate malls. I am an odd duck.
Avatar 12:10pm
Mayuko:

yeah, I'm so bad at shopping anyway, get tired and bored very quickly, almost never go to physical stores anymore. let alone there's a looooong line!
Avatar 12:12pm
Mayuko:

Probably only book stores and craft supply stores. Home Depot etc. not even a record store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
listener james from westwood:

Yes, if I could teleport from one bookstore to the next all day, that would be perfect. Punctuated by visits to doughnut spots or coffeehouses. (In other words, Portland, OR!)

Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, residents of Planet Vertigo. I stayed home yesterday and bought one thing online, a Nest thermostat. Saved $20 additional with a rebate from Central Hudson utility. When it comes, I can keep the temperature really low and turn it back up from my phone as I'm on the way home, which could be late evening or whenever.
Avatar 12:22pm
Mayuko:

Hello, Ken! What does Nest thermostat do??? It controls the temperature of your house?

That Richard Kirk piece was fantastic!

Doug! So happy to have you here!! I thought that piece was beautiful, too!

Yes, it's the smart thermostat of the future, giving hope to the robots that turn the furnace on & off. www.nest.com...

Afraid to admit I'm not too familiar with Leonard Cohen's works. Are they all as powerful as that selection?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
melinda:

hi all
Avatar 1:47pm
Mayuko:

@Ken Me neither, heard and liked a couple of albums of his, but I never had a phase of being really into him, probably because I didn't understand the poetry aspect of his music. I felt like the words were important part that made it powerful but I didn't get it. Many DJs did tributes though (as you might have already heard) available from the top page of wfmu.org.

Heh, I was going to say that I'm planning to walk into town to drop off some books & DVDs at the library here when the show's over. Before the sun ducks for cover.

@melinda he's from Sweden, perhaps they have lots of grey afternoon there?

@Mayuko - Yes, we're probably spoiled by having DST for 2/3 of the year.

What a great first set! I love the arc of it, from a gloom that matches the pictures to the cosmic cars that could be headed to Liz Berg's robot dance party

I liked this Francisco Meirino track enough to clicky-star it. Speaking of unlistenable noise, check out the listener comment at the bottom of Thomas Storck's playlist page (it makes more sense knowing that his show was called "Dangerous for the brain" at the time): wfmu.org...

fred:

Not sure it's related, but "Russian Ballet Dance Company" could refer to "Ballets Russes", an early 20th century dance company based in Paris that was quite controversial at the time. They premiered Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring to a reception that went close to a riot. Nijinsky was part of it, and Diaghilev's choice of costume and set designers is ludicrous, including Picasso, Miro, Dali and many others. en.wikipedia.org...

@zzmm man. I want Noriko Awaya best too :/ You're making me wanna travel there too. Haven't seen it for 6 years now!
Avatar 12:35am
Mayuko:

@fred haha, I think my favorite is "Can you stop talking" since I don't remember a single time Thomas talking that long. I don't feel like I really understand what listeners' ideas of WFMU are but I guess it's ok. Ballets Russes sounds like the right interpretation of the band name, that does seem to be the kind of references they'd make in that scene in the 80's Japan. Thank you for that!
