This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

man I just barely got this show put together yesterday. it was a hard day to numbly wander through. then today my hard drive crashed. but the show must go on, i say

the revolution is a little dirge-y!
Avatar 7:06pm

glad you are here Evan!
Avatar 7:06pm
Flash Strap:

Hyde! yeah this is the sneaky preamble. and a moment of silence, so to speak, for fallen comrade JJ Perrey
Avatar 7:06pm
hyde:

@Flash Strap fighting on through the struggle is what's important
Avatar 7:08pm
Flash Strap:

Right on brother Hyde. That is the point of the show tonight, basically.

so glad the show will go on, hello, good evening, happy to have this in my ears.

Sister Julia! yes
Avatar 7:12pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, yeah. damn right i'll play this song right now. when else would you play this song
Avatar 7:12pm
Flash Strap:

such a weird one, though, seriously
Avatar 7:15pm
Flash Strap:

Roy Harper on this song: "a testament to my lifelong devotion to espousing equal rights for all humans. I have long since wondered about the wisdom of stating that you have more than the capacity to hate your own race for its misdemeanors, but as a polemic it has been both an effective tool and somewhere of a place to stand."
Avatar 7:17pm
ndbob:

hating your own race is as bad as hating any race - this song is vile
Avatar 7:18pm
junglepete:

Evening Flash!....this song's a very apt choice...ndbob, I think this is more a statement about the capacity to hate the things that the
hegemon does. Not whites, per se.
  7:20pm
Ed:

Evening Flash and all!
Avatar 7:20pm
ndbob:

still though Evan - it's a song of hate and intolerance
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

I think it's not meant to be taken strictly literally, bob, and I think we can all relate to a certain extent to the sentiment. Moreover, whiteness is a construct to which all "white" people may not feel they want to belong. The "White Man" should be interpreted as a kind of literary-historical construct, here. basically hegemony, imperialism, etc.

also, it would be fair game to hate white people if you ask me, but your mileage may vary according to ideology and interpretation of history
Avatar 7:23pm
Flash Strap:

I respectfully disagree bob.

Hi everyone.

I personally don't think all hate is created equal, and I find it a fairly useful tool in the spectrum of human emotion. I hate racism. I hate it. I hate misogyny. I hate imperialism.
Avatar 7:28pm

Hi Glenn!

feeling like a conservative here: someone here said they felt "sad" for me because i supported Clinton (ie, not Bernie): as though I didn't think about my position (left, liberal, married to a black woman [now dead, alas]) before I took it.... I stopped talking about politics here.

we are all sad, now. sigh....
Avatar 7:54pm

if it's any consolation, ndbob, most american leftists would be considered right wing by canadian standards. i laugh when i hear republicans referring to the democrats as commies.

Avatar 8:05pm

@Flash agreed. i actually have not voted for a republican or democrat for pres since 1992 (frankly, i have never done much beyond leaving my vote blank or writing in a friend or relative) but i'm with you on that angle
Avatar 8:05pm

me too Scraps! it really should be "Sonny & Linda Sharrock" on the cover
Avatar 8:06pm

i'm sorry, but i don't think so. bernie would be tarred with "socialist".
Avatar 8:06pm

Bernie was our Third Party - & it is Time.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm

I think Bernie could have won, but it's hard to say, since he's so different than previous Democratic candidates. I think a lot of younger people aren't turned off by the socialist label and were really excited about him.

Bad Choice.
Avatar 8:20pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bernie & Drumpf are mirror images. Bernie was the high-information version, & successfully communicated Facts to the Proletariat. He did his best to change it from the Inside (as a Senator). Even tho' he actually is an Independent - not a Democrat.
Avatar 8:20pm

the electoral college just seems nuts to me. it's simply not possible for a canadian prime minister to be elected and not win the popular vote. that doesn't necessarily mean a majority of votes, but a plurality is always required.

Avatar 8:23pm

@glenn the electoral college is nuts. but it's the playing field, and has been for ever. unless it changes, which is doubtful, every potential candidate knows that that is the landscape they have to figure out how to win on.

Re: 2016 ending with the death of Leonard Cohen, woah, woah, 2016 isn't over yet, and I have a hunch it might have a few more nasty or weird surprises in store for us.

Friends, I'm here to dispense musical palliatives for worried souls tonight on the Cool Blue Flame. Soul, jazz and disco from a place of love, struggle, strength, light and peace. Hope you'll join me here: wfmu.org...

I want to say something encouraging, and it's this; the
world needs our attention. There are infinite problems to be solved and it looks very dark but I believe the best way to get through whatever happens is to choose an issue you're passionately concerned about and do something to change it.
To me the fundamental issue is climate change and its consequences. There are various organizations, there are gardens, education and advocacy, classes to teach, macro and micro scaled approaches to take. Being engaged feels good, turns despair into hope. If anyone agrees, choose something.
Apologies friends. Heartfelt and well meant.
Beautiful,helpful show Evan. Thank you.

Sigh, listening on archives. The Old Revolution has one of my favorite lines -- Even damnation is poisoned with rainbows.
