Brian: in the US, pepper came out in mono and stereo. I am not sure about the UK. But I do know that the Beatles payed more attention to the mono mixes---don't forget, most people in those days used one speaker record players of transistor radios

I had an idea for an Alvin & the Chipmunks movie (my daughter was watching one yesterday)...a rival chipmunk becomes a pop star by slowing down his vocals to sound like a normal human singer. Alvin and his brothers are faced with the choice of whether to slow down their vocals to compete or keep it real.
