Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm doctorjazz:

I knew I heard him somewhere :)
Think it was elsewhere as well, but that could be lt...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Parq:

I'm guessing Weird Al's "Foil" would be too literal.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm doctorjazz:

Love this Mickey Katz stuff.
Avatar 12:39pm still b/p:

Too bad Bob Hope's no longer with us. He sang "Buttons and Bows" in "The Paleface" and coulda done one of those late-career duets with Ronnie Ong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Parq:

just looked at Katz's Wikipedia page. Well worth a look, if only for the section headings. Fun reading in a way that WP pages usually aren't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Oh rats! I had to leave my desk for a few minutes and missed Mickey Katz. Hmm, maybe Charlie can make me a copy... :-)
Avatar 12:40pm Carmichael:

I've always enjoyed April Stevens and Nino Tempo. Deep Purple and All Strung Out On You, in particular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Parq:

Wendy: Shazam, you're a copy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm doctorjazz:

I was at the old Knitting Factory on a Saturday night, Don Byron was playing with his Mickey Katz band there, which was sold out. There was a line of Jewish folks from Long Island, and one was standing at the ticket booth screaming at Michael Dorf, "I drove all the way from Long Island to see this", and he was screaming back, "where are you on Tuesday or Wednesday nights, when we have 5 people in the audience?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Wendy del Formaggio:

So Mickey Katz was a DJ? Where can we get those recordings?!
Avatar 12:46pm Carmichael:

This sounds a lot like Shane McGowan.
  12:47pm Listening Out There:

I too saw Don Byron playing the Mickey Katz klezmer. Great stuff. He had a reeds player who could do all the tricky sax lines...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Charlie:

Parq -- looking fw to reading that Katz WP entry later:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Parq:

Never heard a woman do "Dime" before. Interesting take on it.

Howdy Charlie!!!

That whole God Bless Tiny Tim album had a huge impact on me as a kid. I keep coming back to it again and again.

Dave Van Ronk! Yay!
Avatar 1:08pm geezerette:

Me too Charlie! My parents took us to see him in Vegas. (1) :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Parq:

Possibly the greatest version of Alabama Song ever. But then, DVR's version of anything is probably the greatest version of it ever.
Avatar 1:09pm geezerette:

...(!)
  1:12pm Listening Out There:

geezerette: never heard "The Ice caps Are Melting." Oddly, I did hear an interview with Sting (!) where he said that playing with Tiny Tim was a challenge. Apparently, TT would call out for amazing obscure songs since he had an enormous repetoire...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Charlie:

geezerette -- wow, tiny tim in vegas ... the mind boggles ...
Avatar 1:13pm geezerette:

Hi Parq! I've listened to Van Ronk a lot this year because he was new to me and I have to agree. Seeing him live would have been electric! Not literally...but,y'know...:)
Avatar 1:17pm geezerette:

Charlie it was surreal. He totally unnerved my dad, who could not stop laughing. I had very funny parents. :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Parq:

Completely essential Tiny Tim listening, for all non-mainstream music fans, but especially for those who dismiss him as a 60s novelty.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Charlie:

Parq -- will check. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the songs of the great vocalists and songwriters of the tin pan alley era.
LOT -- I've also heard he was hard to follow (as a musician) because he would phrase in a personal way, add beats, etc.
Avatar 1:43pm Carmichael:

Tiny did the best version of Stairway to Heaven I've ever heard. I heard the description "Mr. Ed at a piano bar", but it's so much more.

Avatar 1:48pm still b/p:

I've wondered from time to time, in these recent years when unlikely movies are turned into stage productions, if Dr. Strangelove, could...by the right people..be turned into a musical. Johnny would have been perfect to appear at the end to do that number.
  1:49pm Listening Out There:

still: *Could* make a good musical...especially if it included the pie fight in the war room (not included in the final cut)...fine idear...
