Hi, everybody, welcome to the Random Pull special. I've never heard any of these records and so far they are sounding pretty good!
Avatar 9:14am
bobdoesthings:

almost forgot you were doing this Joe! nice! my question is .. how "random" is random - like close your eyes dont read anything pick a random track random? or are your eyes open and you're reading album titles and song titles and crossing your fingers?
Avatar 9:16am
Joe McG:

@bob: Oh, I'm definitely looking at covers and song titles. Then I just pick one!

Sounding good, Joe. I trust you're including Michele's name on the patent application.
Avatar 9:18am

This particular record has a caveman on the cover swinging a bone while the band, naked, hunker down on the beach!
Avatar 9:19am
Joe McG:

@ken: Michele couldn't be here today because she is making art!
  9:25am
Blix:

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the show, but you do realize that this show sounds a lot like your other shows. Maybe you haven't been working as hard as we thought all this time? Does the DJ select the library or does the library select the DJ?
Avatar 9:26am
Joe McG:

@Blix: Well, I guess I would gravitate to things that I look appealing to me naturally.
Avatar 9:28am
Joe McG:

@Blix: For instance, I saw a lot of free-jazz looking saxophone records this morning in the stacks. I'm not really going to select those since it's likely I won't like 'em.
Avatar 9:29am
MFOOZ:

This random mix sound a lot like my personal collection. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

This might be covered under #6934846. "Method of generating unpredictable and auditable random numbers." www.google.com... Maybe your idea has the novelty of the numbers being musical numbers and not number numbers?
Avatar 9:31am
Joe McG:

@MFOOZ: Ha ha~!
  9:34am
Blix:

It's odd because I have yet to hear a clunker yet. Maybe you intuitively have a great ear for things you haven't heard. I'd have picked something terrible by now. Maybe like that scene in Twin Peak where Cooper has the deputy throw rocks at a soda bottle when suspects' names are said aloud.

Ken From Hyde Park:

Possible marathon or holiday gimmick: Ask listeners to send in four or five random selections from their collections and the DJ plays them in random order.
  9:54am
Blix:

How many bad ideas make their way into this Tete Noires song?
Avatar 9:54am
bobdoesthings:

@ken - there might be a fatal flaw there ..
Avatar 9:55am
Joe McG:

@Blix: You ain't kiddin'! That was terrible.
  9:55am
JakeGould:

@Ken: That might result in listeners "randomly" selecting their own band's tracks which nobody wants.
Avatar 🎸 9:56am
PKNY:

@JakeGould - we would have to supply Trump-style 'extreme vetting' to make sure that doesn't happen.
  9:57am

Despite my grousing I really like this show. I know the pain lasts only a few minutes and maybe some joy can appear later on.
Avatar 🎸 9:59am

@Joe - you could always do a show modeled after Mass Appeal's Rhythm Roulette. Instead of making beats with record picked while blindfolded, you could do a set (or a whole show) doing the same --> massappeal.com...

I was just reading on Wikipedia that a few states do not observe. South Dakota Celebrates "Native American Day" on the same date, Hawaii calls it "Discoverers' Day" and celebrates the Polynesian discoverers of the Pacific Islands, and Oregon just flat out doesn't recognize it at all.

this is a well done neo rockabilly track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am

If we were to replace it with another holiday, I'd advocate making South Dakota's Native American Day a national thing. We certainly owe them a hell of a lot more than a bank holiday, but it's a start.

My humble opinion: Show-specific pledges are a bad idea. Most listeners (generalizing here excuse plz) listen to the station, not to a specific dj, although heavy listeners likely all have their favorite shows. Put one meter on the whole fund drive and have every pledge help reach that one goal; it feels wrong to pit shows against each other.

@Joe stalvey: I share your sentiment, and I complained mightily about the prospect when Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine dropped from the schedule. However, none other than our present DJ, Mr. McGasko, has assured me that despite appearances the per-show take is not a factor considered in programming. I was relieved to learn as much.

Liona Boyd (Canadian) did a beautiful hodgepodge piece with three other Canadians guitarists Ed Bickert (jazz) Rik Emmett and Alex LIfeson called Beyond Borders in the 80's. Being before the Internet as we know it. it was one of the flimsy plastic records as an insert in Guitar Player magazine (sort of like the 45 records that were incorporated into cereal boxes that you cut out... ). Anyway here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luazBVOYa9c ... there not enough Liona on it for my liking, but ...
  11:20am
Joe stalvey:

I know. I am saying it should be the sole option. But whatever it takes to motivate donations; I would hate to see the station go dark. Pandora, iTunes and all the rest do not hold a candle to FMU. My opinion.
  11:21am
Evan:

Re: Billy Hancock,
His band was one of the rockabilly acts that played in the Washington DC metro area back in the late 70s and early 80s. He wasn't young at the time, so could have been around since the original rockabilly era. Switchblade was another such act in the DC area at the time. It was surprising to me that Billy Hancock was someone the DJ wasn't familiar with. But I guess that reflects both a regional and age bias on my part.

@joe - OHH . I said it was a dumb question because I think the Sister Nancy is titled "Bam Bam" not "Bang Bang" .. ah, ok, cooll.

Ariana Grande does a "Bang Bang" with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj. I could handle two or three hours of it.

Jesus. It's like Larry Raspberry took a tour of my office before writing this song. Jive Asses, every one of them.

is being a jive ass better or worse than being a jive turkey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am

I would consider it... comparable.

From now on, I plan on using "jive ass" more in everyday convos, using Larry's 'ay-ess' pronounciation.

This one tops the show! Larry had some swagger in '74...in spite of his last name being Raspberry of course.
