i feel like this tape is sort of almost a bit too earnest, but at the same time it's the dedicated earnestness that makes it sound pretty good

i mean, think about this in relation to Can's ethnological forgery series. Then in relation to, say, Elisabeth Waldo's more exotica-leaning precolumbian-esque compositions. It's a cool piece situated in a rich little corner of music

I can handle any amount or earnest as long as it's not sentimental–with new age music, that earnesty is often what lends it its "cult" vibe, like the music contains actual magic. for true believers anyway. Of course, a sentimentality or saccharine sound can just RUIN everything, making it sound like a spa that isn't even run by guru-followers or cult members.

there is also an appealing camp quality to a certain kind of corny new age, but again, a kind of earnest dedication is key

i agree, for the most part. i like this tape a lot. i think though what i feel about this one is that while i like the dedication and i appreciate the seriousness of it, at times it feels a little.......academic? it's really good, don't get me wrong. i just feel like maybe it needs a little levity. it might be better if it was a little cornier, is all i'm saying.

There's a "vibe" you get driving through parts of the southwest, near or in Indigenous regions. ( If you're willing to resist music you've brought, or satellite, etc.).. This music,(Xochimoki) has that in spots. Like driving where older landscape is still visible and only picking up stations with low power transmitters that speak Navajo or Hopi and play only traditional music.

i love the Stones record. but man, he also played on tons of Lalo Schifrin stuff (esp. Mission Impossible and Mannix). Also with Shelly Manne on Daktari, which i have to admit was the soundtrack to my childhood. i was totally obsessed with Daktari.

Mostly missed out on the Daktari show because it was Thursday night, and I had go to dancing school on Thursday nights! That night of TV deprivation also meant I didn't see how Batman and Robin escaped on Thursday from the Wednesday cliffhanger! Like Dickensian hardship, man...not being totally up on the Thursday programs with the other kids.

@Flash well, i loved the show because i was an inveterate animals kid in the 70's and i was crazy for anything like that. i imagine now that it's white-people-in-africa-collecting-wildlife theme might not seem as innocent as it did when i was seven, but well. to paraphrase trollope, the past is a different country and they did things differently there.
