Betty! I've been dying to hear this.
  12:07pm
Ari:

Super start. That Caston & Majors album got shamefully neglected by Motown. As for Betty, I've been curious about this release. Cool to hear her in her formative stages (you should drop some of that prime era live stuff of hers some day soon!)

hi, Duane, Train Gang! I'm hangin out.

Heya Chris!

This Bobby Caldwell cover sounds very natural. The reggae rhythm was always implied, but just smoothed out with the West Coast production. Cool piece.

Killer jams, the train is roaring down the tracks!

Don't wanna monopolize the board, but ACE Joan Armatrading track! She is sooooo underrated...

i sure wish they were more universally well-known -- THANK YOU, Duane!

we need sunscreen to be in Fab's presence

el BO-Bo:

Maaaan, how I miss this music. Why isnt anybody making this type of groove anymore? Why can't my Newyo Rican brothers make more soul recordé like in the 60's n 70's? Any theories Duane? Great show as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Michael 98145:

what el BO-Bo said
Avatar 1:36pm
Duane:

hmmm...we can ask Fab maybe and discuss..i have a few theories though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
sweeks:

groovy, baby
  1:40pm
Ari:

You really got those "rubber band" basses bopping today! This Starpoint track is more than a little Steve Arrington reminiscent, no?
  1:40pm
el BO-Bo:

Yeah. Id b interested if he has any opinion on that. I can say that I was heavily into soul/disco until I started breakdancing in 80. After that hip-hop and now? Anythings good. I've missed it so though. This show is the s**t; so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Kat in Chicago:

"makes me wanna... I ain't gonna say that, haha" (priceless)
Avatar 1:41pm
Jshatan:

I wonder if that is a certain Brother Johnson on the bass on this track. Virtuosic!
Avatar 1:46pm
Eli:

Bringing back memories of the classic french house jam by Cheek. Played that until it wore out in the '90s!

  1:48pm
el BO-Bo:

I think maybe with the demise of shows like Soul Train and Dance Fever, soul had nowhere else to go so it went down down down and it didnt come back up.
Avatar 1:49pm
Perpetually New Listener:

what about some Funkadelic ???
Avatar 1:52pm
Jshatan:

If you want to know my theory...African-American music has always been about constant innovation. Just when you get a bead on rock & roll, we go to soul...figure that out, then get to funk. Got funky? How about some disco. Then hip hop. Hip hop goes suburban, dig our New Jack R&B. And on and on...always one step ahead. No time for nostalgia. Just a theory...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Kat in Chicago:

I do miss soul.
  1:55pm
el BO-Bo:

U.Penn in da hauss. Yeah.
  1:57pm
el BO-Bo:

Right on Jshatan but, with nostalgia selling so well don't you think a musician may cash in while making beautiful music. What about Leon Bridges? He's old school thru n thru.
  1:58pm
el BO-Bo:

MC Solaar RULES!!! See, I'm olde but this track is celestial
  1:58pm
Ari:

Always liked MC Solaar's smooth flow. First two albums are ace!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Michael 98145:

pass the Cohibas
Avatar 2:01pm
Jshatan:

Yes, el BO-Bo - there is currently a nostalgia thing happening - "Brand New You're Retro" - but I don't find it very exciting. I'd rather have everyone know every great OV Wright or Syl Johnson song before we get new folks retreading soul. Just my opinion, of course.
  2:08pm
Jeffy Jazz:

D-Train!!! What a great ride, as always!

Ari:

Considering how post-punk this vibes, it might be interesting to learn Freddy's take on the rich poly-cultural ferment of the historical Downtown scene: what enabled it, how those times/conditions differ from today, how find that kind of fruitfulness in today's different environment...
Avatar 2:41pm
Jshatan:

Good stuff!

Cecile:

Is he still there? My wi-fi is fixed!
  2:45pm
Cecile:

Ari, I know a big one - cheap rent.
  2:49pm
Ari:

Good point, Cecile. I guess the implication is that the next place to pull together a rich, poly-cultural scene will be someplace more off the radar than NYC, right? Or, might it be that, without the media amplification NYC provides, that hypothetical off-radar scene might never really break wide open?
Avatar 2:52pm
Mochi Pierre:

I think Will Hermes' book, "Love Goes To A Building On Fire", does a very good job detailing how hip hop, punk, salsa, and art world scenes all met up and influenced each other.
  2:52pm

Hello, Freddy!

Wild Neil:

@Ari and Cecile-Organism back in 1994 in Williambsburg, Brooklyn (an art happening/rave) was NOT advertised in the Village Voice to avoid the "bridge and tunnel" set from suburban NJ from colonizing the scene....I agree "scenes" should ferment for awhile so that they can get tasty...something hard to do in this novelty-seeking hyper twitterized world we now live in. This guy made a good point! Vex Ruffin that is....
