Democratoz - Powerful roots, rock and rai tinged reggae from Algeria

Democratoz - photo by Achraf Tello, courtesy of Center Stage

Dynamic Algerian seven-piece Democratoz, from Oran, the country's cultural capital, is at its essence a reggae band. But their music draws on elements of Oran's famous rai music as well as other pop and traditional styles from the Maghreb, sub-Saharan African music, rock, and more. They're also inspired by classic reggae's (often) socially conscious lyrical spirit.

Democratoz wraps up their first US tour, supported by NEFA and the US State Department's cultural exchange initiative Center Stage, with several dates in California through August 5th. And they make their first-ever full-band radio appearance right here on WFMU!

Big thanks to tour manager Theresa Teague, Robert W. Henderson for tour production assistance, Deirdre Valente and Lisa Booth of Lisa Booth Managment, and of course to our illustrious engineer, Mark Koch,

Hi Rob!
  6:12pm Lygia:

Good afternoon! Apologies in advance for the naive question, but how come we listen to some greek contemporary music every Saturday? I just noticed and I find it very pleasantly surprising!
Avatar 6:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loving this 'Bodega Pop'-ish opening set :)
...but then this program always delivers...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Bas NL:

Because Greek music of any era is way cool, @Lygia!
  6:18pm Lygia:

Dear @Bas NL, there is some really bad greek music out there...... I wish you never have to be acquainted with it :)
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Bas NL:

Hi Lygia! I hope so very much! But i've seen dozens of only great Greek music live acts and i have quite a nice collection at home! ;)
  6:33pm Lygia:

Sounds like you know more than I do! enjoy the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Rob W:

Hi Lygia - it's a bit of an accident - I kicked off with the new album by Kristi Stassinopoulou & Stathis Kalyviotis the past couple of weeks, I'm a little partial to them (they were guests on my show in a session recorded when I attended the WOMEX world music conference in Thessaloniki a few years ago) but I don't do that every week! I hope you liked it. Greetings Bas and everyone...
  6:55pm Lygia:
