What I don't understand is how that movie got greenlit, and even weirder, it didn't bomb. WHY DIDN'T IT BOMB? *Who* went to see this?!? And apparently it's not an origin story. It's like a fake sequel to a nonexistent movie or something.

I thought the movie did bomb...the commercials make it look awkward, like they know the concept is incredibly colonialist and usually very racist, but if they're _really_ careful.... Alexander Skarsgård on Colbert's show was fairly funny describing his physical training regimen for it.

"I could never understand ethnic or national pride. Because to me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish isn't a skill, it’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn't say “I’m proud to be 5’11”. I’m proud to have a predisposition for colon cancer.” So why the fuck would you be proud to be Irish, or proud to be Italian, or American or anything?"

Carlin makes sense, but humans don't—at least if you don't reckon with our living with and by small tribes of relatives for most of our history, and identifying with those groups very strongly. @WildNeil It's not about the value of the US Constitution in relation to any others, it's about the idea of people feeling "pride" in things they had no part in creating.

If you heard someone from Iceland say they were proud of the US Constitution, or an American with no Danish background say they were proud of Denmark's constitution (or Iggy Pop saying he was proud of "Astral Weeks"), wouldn't that strike you as a bit odd?

@Neil Yeh, i suppose that's a good summary of Carlin's premise that i was adopting. And i kind of get that people can feel proud of their friends' and family members' achievements, so what you're expressing is a kind of extrapolation of that to a nation-sized family.

But personally i think all forms of pride are probably better dropped. Even without buying into the underlying theology, i can see why it sits alongside sloth and gluttony as one of the "seven deadly sins". Just another obstacle to clarity.

Furchick, i'm sure that's why levis suck now. even the "traditional" styles "505","501" "550"? are "low rise" comparatively. - even though they're supposedly the same style they always were. it's greed and it's bullshit.

In Australia we have many men wearing short shorts with thongs (flip flops) and wifebeaters with ACDC printed on. Thats a good look. with a mullet.

@Steve-just like some bands are bands that mostly musicians like (I like some of those) I hypothesize that many people in bands listen to FMU for inspiration and food for the brain. I think hotpants on women can be awesome....

@Neil: I assume I'm probably outnumbered on the hotpants issue. The term is now dated but I like it for that reason.

I think James Brown liked 'em...he wrote a song about them...they must hurt to wear and cause undue attention in certain environments to be sure!
