P had made a plan with WB to begin a remaster/reissue series. He delivered (so he said) Purple Rain in 2014 for the 30th anniversary double CD release. It was supposed to begin a series of reissues with the alternate mixes and b-sides (of which there were many). I never heard anything official from WB about why it didn't happen. Guess they slept on it. Bet they wake now.

Another question - as someone whose favorite Artist is Hendrix :
How would you relate Prince to Hendrix?
To what extent did Prince explicitly acknowledge Jimi?
Because he evoked him strongly & was implicitly indebted to him (not just him obviously). By the end - that probably wasn't a problem - because everyone knew all that anyway...

Avatar 8:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That's a bold statement - & there are people who rate Prince highly as a guitarist. Was he really that distinctive? If you wanted - you could say Hendrix & Prince both evoked Little Richard (maybe even Alvin Lee) - who in turn copped from Esquerita I suppose...I saw there was a video of Prince covering Jimi's Blues 'Red House' w/ Maceo - so he was alright doing that. As a Hendrix lover - it's always frankly rankled that Prince evoked Jimi & the general Purpleness so heavily - & I'm not aware of any explicit acknowledgement. Maybe it was like the young Steven Tyler denying Jagger - yerklnow - it's just what he had to do to 'learn to play like himself' as Miles would put it...I wonder if you could say Prince kept Jimi's legacy in ways that white Metalhead guitarcentric people never did (his transcendence of Genres, ferinstance) - but...nevermind...

Pete Townshend praised 'Purple Rain' as succeeding more seamlessly & totally @ what he himself wanted w/ his 'Rock Operas': a narrative that hangs together (even as a film) - w/ Pop songs that both work in the narrative & stand alone as good Pop.

His playing "style", definitely looks like Hendrix, although I haven't read enough interviews whether he's acknowledged Hendrix. But his disappearing guitar routine is pretty amazing too (where when done, he throws his guitar up in the air and another band member catches it as he walks off the stage.

i've just backtracked and i'll say the biggest similarity Prince has to Jimi is their respective commitment to perfect results; and to music in general. both great guitarist, but very different.
