When this started I thought it was Alice Coltrane
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am
Jeff Golick:

It definitely has that fullness of sound she brought to it...

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Guten Tzag!
...I'm hearing good things about the 'Miles Ahead' movie. Is this even possible?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am
Jeff Golick:

Hullo, @RevRabbit! I've heard that there are some good things in the movie, but that it might not be a "good movie." I liked Richard Brody's piece on it: www.newyorker.com...
Avatar 9:31am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that sounds more probable...
The complete 'Silent Way' Miles session box was a good thing to stumble across used. Fills the gaps between acoustic & electric (not just *suddenly* 'Bitches Brew') - & a few other things too. Zawinul created 'Ambient' as much as anybody, I gather...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am
Jeff Golick:

Yes yes that is a GREAT box, @RRN63.
Zawinul definitely had a way with washes of sound.

Our cat is currently going HAM on a green pipecleaner. Just FYI.

Morning, all. I have my late pass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Jeff Golick:

Welcome welcome, @doctorjazz. Signed by "doctorjazz's mother," I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am

(That one's for all you Welcome Back, Kotter fans in attendance.)
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:55am
doctorjazz:

The electric Miles box sets all really interesting in letting you hear how much the editing was part of the original albums. It was like movie editing, more so than most rock editing.

Wife's at a meeting, can blast over speakers (poor Ozzie).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am
Stepchild:

I am hearing this one for the 1st time -- knocked out. But I can say (apropos of KOs!) that's certainly correct regarding the Jack Johnson sessions box which was also some kind of huge beautiful revelation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am
Stepchild:

Probably need to seek this one out now. I am guessing the vinyl may not be the way to go, with this half hour track shoehorned onto one disc side? Anybody have that Mosaic set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am
Jeff Golick:

Heya, @Stepchild! Glad to see you. And agreed. The In a Silent Way and Jack Johnson sets are my top two. Revelatory, indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am
Jeff Golick:

Crazy to think that this "Ghetto Walk" stayed in the can for thirty years.
  10:08am
Mark R:

That Miles was tasty. And always cool to hear some Miles you haven't heard before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
Jeff Golick:

I know not of the Mosaic set, @Stepchild.

Hi, @Mark R! Absolutely agree. Though I admit that most of the 1980s/1990s Miles stuff is music I haven't heard yet.

I can almost make out, through my window, the green buds on the trees in the process of sprouting.

Avatar 🦀 10:41am

i'm pretty neutral, for the most part. just like to watch the top teams....it's hard this year not to root for Leicester City, though, since they've totally come out of nowhere to lead over the big money clubs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Jeff Golick:

Yes, the Leicester City story is wonderful, even to a part-time fan like me.

Cecil! Jealous!

Hey, @Amanda! Yeah, I felt pretty lucky. Saw fellow 'FMUer Scott "Long Rally" McDowell there, from a distance.

seemed like wfmu was well represented at that Cecil Taylor show! (Brian Turner was there too, i think). I've only seen him once, back in the late 80's/early 90's. Weirdly at a place in Cambridge (the Western Front) that was mostly a reggae bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Jeff Golick:

I feel like I should just apologize for this set right now.

this is quite Princely...or the artist formerly known as-ish.
  11:22am
Dean:

Cecil Taylor is a global treasure. A show at Victo was one of the highlights. He was having trouble with Canada's Border Services as showtime approached, so John Oswald and Paul Plimley made a spontaneous appearance before planned opener Marilyn Crispell played. Ultimately, Cecil Taylor got to Victo and performed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
Jeff Golick:

That's quite an impromptu line-up, @Dean.
Also: hi there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
coelacanth:

he really is a treasure. i'm always surprised when someone i'm talking with has never heard of him (or Ornette) but i guess i shouldn't be.
...i feel like those are household words.
  11:31am
Dean:

Speaking of someone who had never heard of Cecil Taylor, I routinely stayed in Victo at the B&B (i.e., home) of a retired nurse who would clip all of the local newspaper articles about the festival for me. She was aware of the festival, but knew none of the artists, so a couple of us bought her tickets for that Cecil show, which she attended with us. She sat through the whole thing: Oswald/Plimley, Crispell, and finally Taylor. And she really enjoyed it. She understood why the festival was such an important annual event to its fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Jeff Golick:

That's a lovely story. The world needs more open-minded B&B ladies.
