Good morning annie, ausmanx, and arale! How 'bout that alliteration?

And good morning from Ireland.

Arale, that was by the Four Dreamers -- I always forget which track is which, but all of my bed music comes from them!

arale:

Song that played at the beginning of your show*** (Whoops I haven't gone to sleep yet.) I noticed you play it at the start of each week, I can't figure out what it is. Great intro tune. This is a great song too!

Hello, Cooh John & LizGig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14am
sashajones:

arale, email me at jones.sasha.t@gmail.com and I'll send you the track title later today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14am
sashajones:

annie, how does euchre work?
Avatar 6:19am
annie:

it's a simple card deck removed of all cards less than nine, and the play is similar to spades or hearts, but you only have 5 cards. there is a trump called and the points are counted by how many tricks you and your partner have taken. some tricks taken are worth no points, the ones that do are those taken by the trick cards.. once i got the gist of it i loved it. i was told it's a game that originates in the mid-west.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19am

By the way, that Julia Holter prize is a *record*

No worries, annie, thank you sooo much for your pledge from last week!

well, you got the whole of my Swag for Life last week, but perhaps i can have a crack at a couple of prizes; i am listening during paid employment, after all!
Avatar 6:26am
annie:

:) MY pleasure, for all the hard work you and the crew do. i've loved FMU a loong time. i think i discovered it when Democracy now had a fire in the studio?? and fmu asssisted? i really forget, but BAM, they were in my radar ..
  6:30am
Cooh John:

@annie: I enjoy double deck euchre. It is like WFMU; not as big or popular as other card games but wild and unpredictable.
Avatar 6:31am
annie:

oooh, i'l suggest that next time.. (did i get the overview right, Cooh?)
  6:35am
DJ_Guy:

This record is making my commute on the Path somewhat do-able, thanks Sasha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40am

Hey, thanks DJ_Guy!
Avatar 6:41am
annie:

i just found out last week during a game of scrabble that "wight" means "man"; at least that's what the glossary said.
  6:48am
Cooh John:

annie, hard for me to find players for double deck. So, does Isle of Wight translate to Isle of Man?
Avatar 6:49am
annie:

i wondered, Cooh, i'm going to look that up after i get my morning web-work done
  6:50am
Cooh John:

annie, your synopsis is correct.
Avatar 6:50am
annie:

and, Cooh, if you ever make it to asheville, i'll have you in for a game with the neighbours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52am
Caryn:

Hmm, wight can mean a human being, but it can also be an adjective meaning strong and brave. I wonder which meaning the Isle's name is based on?
Avatar 6:55am
annie:

so it would have to go back to the original languge transliteration..?
Avatar 6:56am
annie:

i miss my lexocological dictionary
Avatar 6:56am
ausmanx:

trust me, the Isle of Wight has NOTHING to do with my Isle of Man...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59am
Caryn:

Hmm, but since people from the Isle of Wight are called Vectians or Vectensians, Wight in the name may just be a bastardisation of its Roman name Vectis (or Ictus).
Avatar 7:00am
annie:

see, i don't have to look it up! wfmu comments section: has ALL the answers.
Avatar 7:03am
ausmanx:

Vectis was the Latin translation of Wiht, or WEIGHT which went back a long way... 2000 BC. the Isle of Man on the other hand, has a bunch of theories, Mannanan the Magician, Ellan Vannin (in Celtic), as ever, no one really knows!
Avatar 7:04am
ausmanx:

i can be tedious about this cos my doctorate was on Manx literature!

aahh!! the plot thickens..

sasha, have you ever seen the movie "Cherry Blossoms"?
Avatar 7:17am
annie:

no, aus, not at all tedious.. i thinks it's fascinating

annie:

this movie is heavenly

"Learning that her husband, Rudi (Elmar Wepper), has a terminal illness, Trudi (Hannelore Elsner) hides the knowledge from him and persuades him to visit their son in Japan. During the course of their journey, she dies in her sleep -- before telling Rudi of his impending death. Grief-stricken, he continues on toward Japan, finally finding peace at Mount Fuji."

If you've never pledged to WFMU before, why don't you make your first pledge to Sasha in honor of her first WFMU Fundraising Marathon? Thanks!
  7:29am
Billy London:

Boom donated! Thanks everyone at wfmu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30am
sashajones:

Thanks Billy!! And hi Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31am
Caryn:

There seem to be several theories about the name Wight. 12th century ideas seem to suggest Old English and Latin words referring to "separation". But a recent publication by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society point to the origin being indeed the Old English "wiht" and related Old Norse etc. words meaning "human being" or "small person". Maybe because the island was seen as a little companion to the greater landmass of Britain. So we're back to the original wight=man point where this whole thing started.
Avatar 7:32am
ausmanx:

some people who came to the gig at my house on Sunday night (in Sydney) were wearing FMU swag from earlier marathonsl it's kinda tribal
Avatar 7:35am
annie:

Caryn, now i'm REALLY going to look it up..all these explanations make sense, too..
Aus, how cool is that, right?
Avatar 7:40am
ausmanx:

it's always the case with these things, there are heaps of theories and they're never really verifiable. just pick the one you like best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42am
Ken From Hyde Park:

I'm going with the theory that Australians wanted to mix things up and called a local body of water The Great Australian Bight.
Avatar 7:43am
annie:

see, any tale that fits an age-old motif, or any variation on that theme, WILL be apt ...there is no separation across cultures, really, we all have the same history within our cells. ( i hope that makes sense)
Avatar 7:45am
annie:

and no matter how rude a name may be, there is still a shred of yearning for a past we cannot quite grasp. that's my take at least

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50am
Caryn:

Yeah, most etymological discussions and other historical issues are so based on limited sources, and both the people looking at these sources and the people who created these sources are all basing their stuff on their own unconscious leanings and personal experiences, so a truly objective and 100 % accurate theory is never going to exist.
