Argh, held up by a train, so in a bit late but happy to be here now!
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, Listener James! Damn those Westwood trains!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
listener james from westwood:

Being held up by a train is at least more legal than holding up a train, but a lot less lucrative.

Heya Tony and people.

Greets, Carmichael!

I was on the wrong channel and just realized what time it was.
What'd I miss?
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya Rich!

The show started with a 10-minute monologue on lima beans. Other that that, you didn't miss anything.
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Found this Folks on Fire cassette in a thrift store (years ago).

listener james from westwood:

Does Oregon vote today, Tony? New Jersey isn't worth a damn in the primaries (June), so I'm envious of those who are in states that are.
  12:28pm
Dean:

Three days ago the band posted a promotion of this show on their Facebook page.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
JtotheK:

this tape is great. i liked the last song, because he sang that sometimes he gets bent out of shape. i can relate.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: Nope, Oregon doesn't vote for awhile. We are equally irrelevant.
Avatar 12:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Sorry for the tracklist chaos there. I only partially blame myself: the tracks are listed in the wrong order on the cassette.
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

... but I eventually got it sorted out....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
JtotheK:

if there is contact info on the tape i'd write a letter to let them know. unacceptable.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
listener james from westwood:

Argh, maddening. It's not like OR or NJ have either a lot of voters or some critical demographics or anything.
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

A belated heya to Dean!
  12:42pm
Dean:

Alabama, Alaska Republican Caucus, American Samoa, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Democrats Abroad
Avatar 12:43pm
Tony Coulter:

So I would say that unlike many of the bands I play on Tape Hiss, Folks on Fire could have enjoyed some mainstream success in the '80s, if things had worked out for them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
listener james from westwood:

The networks will be busy tonight!
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Sanders swept New Zealand, I hear. (They are the first to vote.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm

I'll keep that in mind in case I have to become a Democrat Abroad!
  12:48pm

Tony — We actually received a letter, I kid you not, from EMI Records (the Beatles' label, no less) just weeks after we broke up. I still have it. It said: "We're hearing some interesting things about the band. Could you send us a tape?"
Avatar 12:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, folksonfire!! Nice to know you're listening in.
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

About the letter from EMI: damn ... talk about bad timing. What could have been....
  12:54pm

Thanks for playing it! Yep — re: EMI letter. What could have been ...

i'm off to a meeting -- hope to be back in a bit. really enjoyed this tape Tony -- @folksonfire - this is great!
  12:56pm
folksonfire:

I know that both Laurie Anderson and Jerry Harrison (of Talking Heads) got copies of the LP. No idea if they passed it on to anyone or gave it a nod.

Crowd noise here stolen from Cheap Trick at Budokan ...

Avatar 1:13pm
Tony Coulter:

So, as you may have noticed, today's Tape Hiss is/will be mostly focused on New Wavey, song-oriented stuff.
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

... in other words, that is today's secret theme.
  1:22pm
Matt:

the secret is out. and it's great.
Avatar 1:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Matt! Glad you approve.
  1:28pm
Dean:

Wikimajig notes that Hurrah was *the* spot for new wave, post-punk, etc., in NYC. Among the bands that played there, The Sleepers, an SF band whom I remember seeing in LA. They were pretty amazing.
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

I *think* Hurrah is where I saw Polyrock -- can't remember for sure.
Avatar 1:35pm
Chris from DC:

Never heard Polyrock live before. Pretty cool.

@ Rich: There are definitely some really good ROIR tapes, some of which (like the Polyrock) have yet to be reissued. They can still be had for pretty cheap, fortunately, via the interwebs.

Doug Schulkind:

I'm on the pop (not poop) deck. Sitting here with my dad in his new assisted-living residence. We've got the '30s jazz channel gurgling out of the cable TV. A nice counterpoint to this Tellus charmer.

I wish I still had the Guitar Player magazine from around this time with this feature on 'New York Guitar', Live Skull, Sharp, Rat At Rat R, and, of course, Sonic Youth. It was pretty interesting.
