Lyle Flowers (4th Trombone - 1954):

Is that the Kenton band in the background? I can tell because of the presence of Conn trombones. Stan was a big proponent of Conn. They called him the Conn-Man, though he was not fond of this moniker and did all he could in his lifetime to dissuade others from using it. It's only now, years after his passing, that I feel free in re-invoking the Conn-Man's name again, knowing he cannot scold me, except from beyond in a dream or something.

Ah, Scott. Peter Duchin. I should have known, mostly from the "laid back" style he was famous for, and for his forays into the Carribean as an ambassador of big band music in its waning days. Hence, the forgotten classic, "Pass The Duchin" which can still occasionally be heard late-nights in some of the little tucked away watering holes in Charlotte Amalie or Montego Bay where the old-timers drink away the lonely hours.

  4:36pm
Lyle:

Seems Greg Lake was quite taken with Duchin's version of "A Summer Place," and thought that it needed only his churlish, weighty vocals to turn it into a monster international-level smash. Unfortunately, Duchin was called to appear on Good Morning America, the session was scrubbed, and both men went on to their respective careers and fates, never realizing what might have been something truly wonderful. I suppose it could still happen, but, as the years pass, it seems less and less likely.

Seems the Kenton boys were hungry. Late night on the bus after a show in Chattanooga. Someone spotted a Stuckey's just off the highway, but it was closed. Kenton was asleep in his luxury bunk, so Smitty (the drummer) and Hal Olson (4th Alto Sax) decided they'd just jimmy the back door of the place open, which they did. In five minutes, they returned with three pecan pies, a dump cake, and a gallon of pink bathroom soap (Cashmere Bouquet, if memory serves). everybody had some pie and cake, and literally washed their hands of the whole affair. Kenton never knew, but boy, if he had!

Montovani (or, Monte, as we called him) was doing the eastern leg of a 40-date US tour , opening for the Kenton band. The crowds loved him. A little too much for Kenton's liking. He was jealous, but that's another story. Anyway, Monte liked his Sloe Gin, so after a show in Falls Church, VA, he was throwing a few down backstage when in walks Ike and Mamie Eisenhower! Seems Ike was a huge Kenton fan. Well, Monte was half in the bag, he lurched to his feet, extended a hand to Ike, and promptly threw up right on Mamie Eisenhower's gown! Turns out Ike was on his way to DC to rehearse his inauguration speech. The McGuire Sisters were on the road, so they were able to squeeze Mamie (no small feat) into one of their stage costumes. You can see it in old news footage. A sleeveless, red gown with toule, fur trim, the whole 9-yards. Ike was mad, but he didn't show it. Kenton kicked Monte off the tour that night. Ha! What days those were.
