Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Charlie:

And hello, Parq Present.
And greetings to those not yet here, but whose faces are already here.
Avatar 12:01pm Carmichael:

Good morning, Nothings. When I hear the Rocky & Bullwinkle theme, I know it's time for Charlie.
Avatar 12:01pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon!
Avatar 12:01pm βrian:

Oh ... I've been in this basement before. Yes, I remember ...
  12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Melodica alert!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Charlie:

Hello there, Carmichael and Mayuko and James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Charlie:

That's Miss Lily Banquette playing the melodica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm doctorjazz:

Lovely Combustible stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Parq:

Neat. Is this Vic Mizzy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Webhamster Henry:

I'm the melodicist in my band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm doctorjazz:

Actually, it's Morticia's Theme I was hearing...
Avatar 12:07pm βrian:

Lily Banquette — that's a lovely name. I swoon.
Avatar 12:09pm Michael:

Lurch on harpsichord there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm doctorjazz:

And the Band, great track, is he singing in a wind tunnel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Charlie:

Combustible Edison cover Morticia's Theme on that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Charlie:

Yes, Lurch on harpsichord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Charlie:

Oh, hey, doctorjazz :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Parq:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Charlie:

Ooh, will check that out, Henry!
  12:15pm Listening Out There:

Nifty version of Icarus...originally by Oregon (Ralph Towner)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Webhamster Henry:

RSM can do anything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Charlie:

And he does everything ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Parq:

Goldie Goldwasser is one of my favorite people on the New York off-mainstream scene. I've met her, and she's a sweetheart of a person into the bargain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Charlie:

Hi Listening Out There -- I love the Paul Winter Consort version also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm doctorjazz:

Does anyone else have problems getting to the GOTD page from the main WFMU page? The new videos that are posted below the choices of where to go make it impossible to get to the GTDR page...you can stream, but not from the pop-up (which I need to do to get past the work computer blocks). Usually link through the email Doug sends out, but would be nice to fix that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Parq:

Yeah, digging this Stevie cover. His covers are, if anything, even more ingenious than his original songs.
  12:18pm Listening Out There:

Ah. Forgot about Paul Winter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Brian in UK:

Hello Charlie and funsters.
I seem to remember Miss Lily Banquette from Hyacinths & Thistles by The Sixths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Brian in UK:

Can a Moog yodel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Parq:

Shaking my head and grinning at this one (the
Focus cover).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm doctorjazz:

I thought I know this cover, was this that Scandinavian band...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Parq:

Brian, we're about to find out, aren't we?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm doctorjazz:

That's it! Cool!
Avatar 12:20pm βrian:

Can Cousin It yodel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Brian in UK:

Dutch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Charlie:

They gave the yodel part to the harpsichord!
  12:22pm Listening Out There:

Everyone knows harpschords yodel. Everyone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Webhamster Henry:

@Parq: she is a sweety; we both have sung in the Loser's Lounge shows in the 90s.
Avatar 12:23pm ndbob:

afternoon Charlie and everyone!
Avatar 12:23pm Roberto:

I get asked that all the time!
Avatar 12:25pm Roberto:

Weird, I just attended a company presentation in which the main presenter reminder me of Malcolm McDowell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm doctorjazz:

I'm 0 for 5 so far today... :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Parq:

Henry, believe it or not, I am a Losers alum myself. I was the karaoke drawing winner at one of the XTC shows ca. 2003.

  12:30pm Santos L Halper:

Afternoon, Charlie and other busy bodies. Busy myself but digging what I can catch.

Any suggestions for an R Stevie M starter album or two?
Avatar 12:32pm mauri:

Brian in UK, never heard of that before. Seems like it's called a hat of luck in finnish. finns swedes and sami folk used to dry it treasure it for the life and then buried with the owner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Charlie:

Hey, Brian in UK: Thanks for the lesson in anatomy and mythology. How did that go, was it the easier or more difficult kind to remove?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Charlie:

Hi also Roberto, Mauri, Santos Halper.
re RSM, will suggest something in a few minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Webhamster Henry:

@Parq the Losers cast a wide net! I was with two other LL alums last night - up here in Kingston NY!
BTW, the LL cover of This Whole World by Mary Lee Cortez is also really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Parq:

Santos, as I assume you know, there are literally dozens, many available only under sketchy circumstances to begin with. Out of sheer whimsy, I'm going to suggest you start with 1984's "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About R. Stevie Moore But Were Afraid To Ask", or 2007's "Meet the R. Stevie Moore".
  12:37pm Listening Out There:

"Beware of Mr. Baker" :)
  12:43pm Joe McG:

Hey Charlie--My local news telecast when I was growing up in PA used the first part of this Al Ham song as its theme!
Avatar 12:43pm βrian:

This really has that A.M. radio tinge, n'est-ce pas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Charlie:

Hey, Joe McG! -- Yeah, one of the NY indie TV stations used it too. WPIX, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Brian in UK:

Charlie it was no problem.

mauri, we are heading for Sami country (Northern Norway - Tromso) at the end of February. Hope to see the Northern Lights. My wifes birthday surprise (do not do this every time)
Avatar 12:46pm Jeff:

Wait wait waitaminnute - did "Move Closer to Your World" actually exist as an independent song before it became the news theme?

I guess I always assumed it had been composed for the news.
Avatar 12:46pm Jeff:

Action News, to be specific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Charlie:

Santos --
He is incredibly prolific, and he constantly re-packages existing material. Phonography is a great early record. Contact Risk is also good. Also: The Future is Worse Than the Past (on Megaphon), and Hobbies Galore: His Best 24 (released himself). Check his website!
Avatar 12:47pm Jeff:

Aha! Wikiwiki fills in the blanks again:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Brian in UK:

Kent Brockman I presume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Webhamster Henry:

yes, the Hillside Singers: singing about Coke .. uh .. world peace on a Hillside! They also did one based on a McDonalds ad (You deserve a break today) -> "We're Together"
  12:52pm rf:

So good today. thank you. the Scala choir was esp. delightful
Avatar 12:56pm mauri:

Tromsos a good choice. A very good chance of northern light then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Charlie:

Hi, rf, and thanks.
yes, Henry, perfect harmony...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm doctorjazz:

So, I went to the R. Stevie Moore site, which takes you to the Bandcamp site, where albums he released or is on are listed. There are almost 300 of them! Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Charlie:

yes, doctorjazz. apparently he records, and releases, everything he does!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Charlie:

This song, which I came across recently, is so beautiful to me, that I wanted to build a shrine to it. Or at least a radio show.
  1:05pm jan:

just got to the party- looks like there's plenty left, but what did I miss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Parq:

Jan, we have agreed that (1) Robin "Goldie" Goldwasser is a peach; (2) R. Stevie Moore has put out more albums than Donald Trump has press releases; (3) "Move Closer to Your World" has an interesting history, to say the least, and (4) a Moog version of "Hocus Pocus" is a cool, if quirky, idea.
  1:13pm Listening Out There:

(5) Stevies do it all
Avatar 1:13pm still b/p:

So "folk" Masses were a thing when I was junior high age in a Catholic school, and when in a First Friday Mass the school team of guitarists/singers played "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," there was bloody aftermath! Tongue-lashings and tears! Despite the alternate no-soda lyrics, the nuns were in high dudgeon, feeling accosted by the Coke song as they returned to their seats after Communion. Chose a 13 year old scapegoat and ganged up on her with an improv Sacrament of Excoriation.
Avatar 1:15pm βrian:

@still b/p: I remember those. And I remember thinking I don't want to grow up to be a Folk.
Avatar 1:18pm still b/p:

With their limited chord vocabulary and unstable pitch, maybe they were proto-punks. Just needed to speed it up and turn it up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Brian in UK:

@still b/p tell me more about the tongue lashings.
Avatar 1:23pm βrian:

Jesus Christ, Superstar caused quite a stir, I recall. Kids, these days!
Avatar 1:24pm still b/p:

Fuller lashing description provided/performed for £3 per minute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Brian in UK:

The best work any nuns did was to develop musicians in Jamaica to perform Ska.

I'll take a powder on the TL's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Charlie:

overdue Hi to Jan and still b/p -- been too busy to keep up -- really looking forward to reading back through all the comments. every time I check in you guys are on to some new topic :)
  1:31pm jan:

Lovely B-S&T. Mercifully without David Clayton Thomas' footprint. And nice hearing Stevie.
Avatar 1:32pm northguineahills:

When I was in college, I used to sleep to Dirty, and this song would for some reason always wake me up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Charlie:

Hi NGH -- funny to think of sleeping to SY. Maybe this drum explosion was what would wake you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Charlie:

I could see sleeping to "Hoarfrost," from A Thousand Leaves, which I was thinking of playing today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Charlie:

btw, @doctorjazz -- I believe 'FMU is still working out some issues of the re-design, so some of those issues might be resolved.
