Hey @duke, @AndrewC, @Gary, and @doctorjazz - thanks for being here for the last Wednesday show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am
Jeff Golick:

@duke: The Magic Hour is going on hiatus. Remains to be seen for how long...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:17am
doctorjazz:

Mra also fun, would fit on a recent "post-bop" album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
Jeff Golick:

Yah, though those harmonies kind of give it away a little.

...and from Braxton's Composition Notes: "This is a big band music that relates to the toughness of the big band era (spirit)—as a forum to 'shout' about the strength of positive creativity and (growth). Composition No. 51 is conceived as an offering to and from those 'golden moments'—offered through and from that continuum. Here is a forum to 'get down' on—'either play or leave the room!' As much as I (try to) dig Threadgill's recent stuff with Zooid, he's perhaps the main person I'd wish would go back to "playing the hits."
Avatar 9:40am
Jeff J:

This "hit" is so good it's enough to make anyone wish for more in the same vein.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:41am
doctorjazz:

Love the Sextett, but I do like the latest Zooid album (not some of the other ones, though).
We seem to be in AACM territory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am
Jeff Golick:

Yes, I've enjoyed the new one, too, @doctorjazz, more than some of the previous.

We're never far from AACM territory!

Sorry I screwed up your playlist link in this morning's email blast. That's what I get for doing it at 5:45 in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug! And thanks most of all for sending those emails to begin with. Folks have managed to make their way here without trouble...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:04am
doctorjazz:

I remember seeing CT at a now defunct in the Village...he had gotten a fabulous write up in the Times, stressing how it was no longer a sonic assault, he now played soft, quiet sections as well. Well, there was a line around the block, I thought I surely wouldn't get to see him, but the line kept moving, and we got seats. What I realized after a few minutes was, while he indeed did add softer sections to the music, THEY WERE JUST AS DISSONANT AS THE LOUDER SECTIONS, and the reason I got seated was that most people sat for 5 minutes, then got up and left! (was good for me, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am
Jeff Golick:

Ha - thanks for sharing that, @doctorjazz! Might've been Sweet Basil?
  10:07am
Doug Schulkind:

Go go back and masturbate the corporate beast. Thank you for all the brilliant Wednesday mornings, Jeff and especially Jeff.
Avatar 10:07am
Jeff J:

My fave CT audience experience was seeing him at the Village Vanguard. Guy at next table turns to me and says, "I read about this in the New York Times. I love piano, but my friend isn't so sure. Is this going to be like Billy Joel?"

I'll let you guess how long they lasted.
Avatar 10:08am
Jeff J:

Thank *you* Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
Jeff Golick:

@JJ: that story is almost too perfect to believe.
Avatar 10:12am

Hand to the holy book of your choice!
Back in the days when the NY Times could really get you an audience and even draw in the bridge and tunnel folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am
Jeff Golick:

Oh, I believe! It's the sort of detail one might not find credible in fiction, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
Jeff Golick:

This is the "terrible beauty" set.
Avatar 10:15am
Jeff J:

For fiction, you'd have to replace "Billy Joel" with "Keith Jarrett" probably.
Avatar 10:17am
Jeff J:

That would be Pharaoh Sanders on the saxophone.
Avatar 10:20am
northguineahills:

Glad I can catch you guys for a few minutes. Gotta figure out how to hear y'all on Sundays.

@Polyus: the magisterial Jeanne Lee.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:46am
Brian in UK:

@Jeff J Saw the otherworldly Bill Evans at Ronnie Scotts around 1980. There were no numb nuts in the audience craving BJ that I heard. Jazz is a many layered joy, bit like those chocs.

Figures, I find a show I really like and it disappears shortly after. Always the last on my block to know.

That would be 8 a.m. Sunday in the heartland. A theoretical time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

I figure the True and Pure Heartland is already up and at church by then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

Our ilk is of the sullied and debauched heartland, naturally.

The Pointer Sisters appear elsewhere on this Headhunters LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
AndrewC.:

Was Eddie Henderson a Headhunter? I was thinking how Headhunterish it sounded, and now you are playing them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Jeff Golick:

Phewf, @βrian.
  11:06am
Polyus:

I can listen to d:O with one earbud while still pretending I'm listening to the sermon though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Jeff Golick:

@AndrewC: it all kind of blurs. Mwandishi Band > Headhunters, plus Miles' various outfits. Don't think Eddie played with any Headhunter bands tho.
  11:07am
Polyus:

Just smile and nod, smile and nod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
AndrewC.:

@Polyus, do you have your glasses with the eyes painted on also?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Jeff Golick:

Herbie only listed as producer on this Headhunters album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am

This is the one with "God Made Me Funky" right? That is the perfect title.
  11:10am

@Andrew - nobody has caught on yet.

Jeff Golick:

@AndrewC: exactamundo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am

Some titles are so perfect and somehow so inevitiable, you can't believe they are real. You believe you must have come up with it yourself in some fever dream and always thought it would be a great song title. But no, there it is, on an actual record.

The elusive Dogon A.D., I think that has been in print for about 15 minutes here and there over the past 30 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
Jeff Golick:

Yah, @JtotheK, tho it seems to be OOP as a CD, believe it's available as a reasonably priced mp3, if that's anything you can manage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: Dogon A.D. got a wonderful reissue from International Phonograph a few years ago: internationalphonographinc.com... I didn't think they were limited editions, but the Amazon CD price would seem to indicate that it was indeed a limited run.

Call me old fashioned but I never really got past JC's late 50s/early 60s quartets. Maybe because that was the first jazz I owned.

Any new Trane, in 1972, must've seemed a revelation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

i'm sure it's good either way. i've never heard it without the strings; but i don't think they're inappropriate, and i wouldn't doubt John liking it.
