More Polka?!

Hello Jeff. Dare I say my intro was Can't Help Thinking About Me by David Jones and the Lower Third. Yes, I am that old.
  12:05pm
OldManLandry:

The BOOSH!
  12:06pm
Dean:

Intro to Bowie: Space Oddity c. 1974. Damn, watched the entire Lemmy funeral yesterday and now this. Too fucking morbid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
JtotheK:

the polka tunes reminded me of all the radio stations in upper WI that still play it ... gonna have to tune in to those next time i'm up north.

Rolling the barrell back...
Hi hi hi, @Uncle Michael! @listener james! @JtotheK! @glenn! @βrian! @Brian in UK! @doctorjazz!

Good lord. Does it rhyme with wowwy, joey, or hooey??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Uncle Michael:

Ziggy for me.
Avatar 12:07pm
glenn:

fave album - man who sold the world. fave song - hard to say, but probably station to station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Jeff Golick:

I think the BBC obit noted it rhymes with "joey."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
listener james from westwood:

Therese's mid-show pivot last night to Bowie was skillful. Taking things tentatively re: tributes this week as I got really swamped during the Lou Reed nods on top of then-fresh family grief. But happy WFMU celebrated the hell out of both artists well before their passing and sent or will send them off in proper style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, Landry! @Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm probably a little too proud of having debuted his new album on WFMU and its subsidiaries.
Avatar 12:10pm
βrian:

Ok, that's two solid votes for the canonical pronunciation. Good to know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Brian in UK:

Like I mentioned previously. He was cool right up to the end. No bleating about his situation. We can all be heroes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Uncle Michael:

If just for one day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Jeff Golick:

@UM: I'd be similarly proud.
@Brian: that his condition was so little known, given the current levels of media frenzienss, is kind of astonishing.
  12:13pm
Doug Schulkind:

I still miss Lester Bowie terribly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Jeff Golick:

As I generally like to take things back to books, here's a list of Bowie's 100 favorite books: www.openculture.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, Doug. I did note, while searching my music for "Bowie," that I have a preponderance of Lester.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
JtotheK:

thanks for the list of books, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Brian in UK:

@Uncle do you think DB's vocals are powerful on the new album or is there a hint of fading?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jeff Golick:

Among Bowie's (many) saving graces: his sense of humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Uncle Michael:

it's hard for me to tell if he sounds weakened by illness or if the subdued vocals are intentional. I have no idea how long ago he recorded them or what the status of his health was at that time. I'd just be projecting, as I am now that I presume the entire album to be a conscious swan song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Brian in UK:

Book list pretty well mid/late twentieth century.

Uncle bit of a dumb question. Did he play sax on it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't know. There is sax on it...on Lazarus it's very good. I haven't looked at liner notes so I don't know if that's him.
Avatar 12:23pm
glenn:

if this isn't peter hook playing bass, i'll be shocked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Uncle Michael:

Donny McCaslin – flute, saxophone, woodwinds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Jeff Golick:

Was recorded mostly in January 2015, with a jazz group led by saxophonist Danny McCaslin. Here's more on how it came together: www.rollingstone.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Uncle Michael:

Tim Lefebvre – bass
  12:23pm
Doug Schulkind:

Bowie plays sax on some lovely Steeleye Span tracks. And doesn't he get saxy on that one Genya Raven tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Uncle Michael:

David Bowie – vocals, acoustic guitar, mixing, production, string arrangements, "Fender Guitar" on "Lazarus"
Donny McCaslin – flute, saxophone, woodwinds
Ben Monder – guitar
Jason Lindner – piano, organ, keyboards
Tim Lefebvre – bass
Mark Guiliana – drums, percussion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Jeff Golick:

Many (most?) of you might have just heard this one on Joe McG's show, but ...can't...not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Brian in UK:

Thanks. Andy Gill in the Independent (one of the few critics I trust) said it was his best in the longest time. Sounds like a grower.

Jeff, avantgardepolka next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm

I'm afraid I don't go that deep, @Brian. (But this was indeed inspired but a non-polka cut Joe played.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
Jeff Golick:

@Brian in UK: You got that right.
  12:56pm

Not exactly on topic, but more than one speaker at Lemmy's funeral mentioned he was a huge fan of ABBA (?!), The Beatles, Monty Python, Goon Show... One wishes there were a heaven and there were bands there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
