Just imagine a Deadhead wandering into The Matrix and hearing this...

Good morning outta Amsterdam. Some hot VU jams off the matrix tapes is a great way to start a working week. Looking forward to the rest of the show Jeff

...a song about mixing acid & speed, I was led to believe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08am
pacific standard simon:

Could be. Or mixing Sterling Morrison with Lou Reed.

Morning all. You're in a safe, Holiday Music-less harbor for the next few hours....

joeray:

Morning Jeff and WFMU listeners. Anyone care to offer a quick review/opinion
of "The Complete Matrix Tapes"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10am
pacific standard simon:

I think you're listening to it, joeray.

Greetings from Alaska. The trippy vibes sound lovely...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28am
pacific standard simon:

How many hours of daylight in Alaska these days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30am
weirdwolf:

In Anchorage it's about 6 hours, I would say. Sun rises around 10:30am. I'm so looking forward to winter solstice...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31am
weirdwolf:

Where are you listening from Simon?
Avatar 3:32am
Jeff Conklin:

I lived in Anchorage for a summer. Best time of my life. Well, one of them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35am
Ken From Hyde Park:

About thirty years ago, I visited relatives in Eagle River, north of Anchorage. They said that near the equinoxes, they'd gain or lose an hour of daylight a week, which I found amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37am
pacific standard simon:

@weirdwolf - A few miles west of Seattle, WA. Days are shorter here, but not that short.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38am
weirdwolf:

Jeff, AK is pretty great, but I prefer summer solstice. Summer here is pure heaven...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40am
pacific standard simon:

"I love the night. The day is OK, and the sun can be fun, but I live to see those rays slip away."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41am
weirdwolf:

Ken we are lose 5 minutes of daylight a day. But soon we'll start gaining 5 minutes a day. Can't wait. This music feels fitting for our snowy, dark days...

This is beautiful. Not your usual horn textures. Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am
pacific standard simon:

Sounds like bagpipes and sitars!
  3:49am

Yeah, drone and wail simultaneously. Chilling and thrilling, if one may say.

Do the elderly FMU DJs pat you on the head, Jeff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10am
coelacanth:

hello jeff and ghetto children
Avatar 4:12am
Jeff Conklin:

@simon: ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
pacific standard simon:

Only 37. I have cassette tapes older than that. Irwin probably hs airchecks older than me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
coelacanth:

i ☆ed that white light white heat even though i didn't hear it because -"long"?...i always wished it was much longer.
......now i just need to hear a much longer rendition of "we're gonna have a real good time together"...preferably live, with some balls, like the patti smith versions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am
coelacanth:

what's only 37? my life as a non-virgin? i knew that.
Avatar 4:20am
Jeff Conklin:

Well, I'm pretty tall and I doubt I'm the youngest one here....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24am
pacific standard simon:

I guess it amazes me, sometimes, how so many of the DJs at "the free-form station of the nation" are my age or older -- and by that, I mean 'nearing retirement'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am
coelacanth:

it's a good thing simon. i don't think i've ever met anyone who's under 35 now who doesn't like abominable shit music- even if they also like really good music. (& even if they like wfmu)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am
Wynford Eagle:

'tis a dull oppressive kinda morning on the jurassic coast of the UK...keepin it locked to wfmu helps me through...thanks jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35am
pacific standard simon:

It has its ups and downs, coel -- I've put on some classic swing or r'n'b music at work and got a very positive reaction. But the Velvet Underground? Not so much.
Avatar 4:37am
Eiderdown:

Oh man, this Hiragi Fukuda is soooooo good. Damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am
pacific standard simon:

In case anybody is sitting on the fence about this: Yes, The Man In The High Castle IS a series that is worth watching.
Avatar 4:42am
Jeff Conklin:

I've met many people under 35 who have, in my opinion, exquisite taste in music. I also live in a failry large metropolitan area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
coelacanth:

i live in a semi-permeable bubble simon. velvet underground gets played at college parties here sometimes.
-also things like Trane and even Anthony Braxton.
...but at some point, inevitably, some mindless rap (or "hiphop",or "modern r&b" comes on...it's all [c]rap...) takes over.
  4:48am
Listener142985:

Want to hear Hirogi vs. Vini Reilly at a tequileria--soon.

Listener142985:

Hirogi. Bad typing finger.
Avatar 4:55am
pierre:

absolutely wonderful music ! Merci Jeff C.
And bonjour !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00am
coelacanth:

simon, i too have gotten very positive reactions playing solid old rnb, or rocksteady reggae in the pub; or actual punkrock (as opposed to what passes as punkrock today)...but when the people who got on the dance floor for that go up to the jukebox, they- with rare exception- play shit.
...and if they don't play shit? it's still always "commercial" hits.
  5:19am
Listener142985:

Wow, some extended rant about the tin ears of the young. Seriously? Can just hear echoes of parents saying similar things since Elvis. Give the kids a break, they will be adjusting your feeding tube one day. My 20 year old daughter has far more sophisticated taste in music than I did at her age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31am
listener monica:

good morning and thank you for easing us into this day with music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34am
listener monica:

i was in anchorage for summer solstice one year. i wandered out of a bar at 11 pm and it was still light out. i even photographed a moose at 1 AM with no flash! everyone around me had a scrip for ambien, tho.
Avatar 5:38am
Jeff Conklin:

My pleasure, Monica...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43am
coelacanth:

-985 - either your daughter's an exception and has nothing to do with the blatant truth about the overwhelming majority or you were terribly unsophisticated at 20.
...and rock and roll (& elvis) were shunned by adults for far different reasons than the reasons why commercial music sucks now. there's little similarity between the 2 situations.
...there's nothing to "give them a break" about. i'm just stating it.
  5:50am
Eric Hat:

Good Morning guys. Good soundtrack for the predawn snow falling here. Thank you.
Avatar 5:51am

Ah, snow. That sounds amazing...
