I have hazy recollections of it, but I could have sworn it was an NBC show on Saturday Nights for awhile, and then in the later years NBC dropped it and it switched to syndication? Or maybe it was in syndication all along. Man the things I remember from being a kid is weird haha.

No!!! Spotify makes terrible software which keeps breaking our computers!

And it refuses to remember that you've told it not to start every time you log in, and it doesn't give you the option not to apply updates (which re-break a setup you might just have gotten stable).

We really need to find some alternative to Spotify. I'd like to eradicate it from the station. Anybody have suggestion?

I have so much rare stuff in my itunes library i can't break away and use Spotify full time. I also don't like how they went away from a desktop app to a web interface. I feel a bit defeated where I have just backed up all my local files, deleted them and just use Match/Apple Music. Apple Music is basically just for adding what songs I can find from this show at this point haha

I've found a lot of stuff on Spotify that I hadn't found anywhere else. I hadn't synced my ipod in 5 years and when I tried this past summer, iTunes deleted 7 years or accumulated music. I wept all night and swore I would never use iTunes again.

Avatar 4:49pm
Jeff:

@βrian: there's no need to use iTunes even for that - VLC is a fine choice for listening to streams. Way more lightweight than iTunes, and not prone to those sudden user-interface redesigns which always seem to be aimed at pushing a product or service to the front rather than serving users.

For those who miss when iTunes was a good way to index your own music you had physically on your own computer... note that several formerly-iTunes-using DJs with gigantic collections of music have been migrating to JRiver Media Center:

jriver.com...

Media Center's main difficulty is that it probably just does too much stuff, so the interface can seem a little complicated, but people get used to it, and come to trust the software more than iTunes. And you can configure it to show less stuff.

Available for Mac OS, Windows and Linux. The visual design is still a little bit uncomfortably Windows-y on other platforms because Windows is where it originated, but the Mac port is now solidly usable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jeff - Ditto for VLC. That thing gives me no problems. I haven't messed with Spotify, but I have used Google Play Music on my Android phone. I searched "Hallogallo" and it played it and a bunch of other songs that are similar to it, which was what I wanted that day.

...geez - what is all this...maybe I'm lucky (sorta - in a way) in having old computers that won't update newer versions of iTunes ??
...Somebody took up WinAmp & saved it.

I think they recently went out of business?

Jeff:

A lotta people swear by Winamp, and keep using hoarded copies of it it steadily.

The original project got shut down and there have been no new updates in quite awhile, but I understand there are efforts underway to revive it.
Avatar 4:59pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but I don't think they're updating WinAmp again yet, or supporting anything related to it...

Can't go wrong w/ anything arranged by Vannier.
Avatar 5:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You can still stream w/ WinAmp - but I think the lack of updates & support shows up in little ways - like the stream addresses staying listed, rather than station names (?) - which is awkward interface. I always liked you could choose skins & such...
I'm fine now w/ iTunes to do all audio in one place (streams, lists, podcasts, iPod programming/loading) - so I hope I don't update it one day to Horrors you all speak of...

@Jeff thanks for all the computer tips. I'm still completely lost and only just switched over to Spotify for new songs. Cos the new iTunes is HELL. Will read over all your advice properly after my show.

@Gaylord AGREED. It is perfection. Lucky Caroline Munro. Although he does go a bit over-board with the self-pity.
