Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

The Electric Prunes  Too Much to Dream   Favoriting The Electric Prunes  Reprise  1967  MP3  This record literally scared me as a kid.   Thanks for listening to this Halloween episode of The Dusty Show. I enjoyed assembling it and taking an extra day to do it. If you've listened in the past, maybe you recognize some songs I've played on Halloween shows before. While I like to introduce new material when I can, I do enjoy having certain recurring songs on The Dusty Show so that a certain familiarity develops. A coziness of sorts.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PLEDGED iduring WFMU's Silent Fundraiser. You helped me to reach the goal for the show, which was a big relief. THANKS again!!!!!! I will thank everyone on the air next week.

I hope you had a fun Halloween. I stayed home and watched the Mets lose :>(

Please keep listening and drop me a line if you're so inclined. Dusty@wfmu.org. It's always good to hear from the listeners. Until next time ... take care and ... always remember!

i read that ghost sightings dramatically decreased when cell phones became common. theory is they work on the same frequency. i kid you not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

The razor in apples is just an urban myth/scare story for the most part--prob happened 0-1 times total. The moral of the story is: Halloween is for CANDY!! What'reya giving healthy FRUIT for?!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Marcel M:

I'm with ya on that matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm

some smart ass in my home town gave out toothbrushes on halloween.

@Dale: Did his house survive the night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
dale:

it was the late 60s when kids were scared of getting caught. not like these whippersnappers today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Ick!!! That's the 2nd worst Halloween gyp, besides religious tracts.

That's an interesting ghost sightings/cell phone frequency connection. Infrasound (sounds below the 20 Hz audible frequncy) still vibrate on your body, and that's been suggested to generate fear of ghosts, spirits in the corner of your eye, physical unease and numerous other phenomena.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Marcel M:

are you saying ne'er do wells didn't exist in the late 60s?
  6:13pm
Dean:

Uhm, yeah, the razor blade story...in my neighborhood at least...was a myth. No truth to it whatsoever. Besides, I was too young at the time to shave.
Avatar 6:13pm

better not take any calls today, Clay; the call could be coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!

I got a condom last year while escorting my kids through the neighborhood. Clever idea, if of little value to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of "religious", I seem to spread the word about infrasound whenever I'm on this playlist! Always seems to come up/connect with the topic! :) You know, like when you watch a rerun of a show, don't watch it for months, and then you see that exact same episode!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
dale:

neat article matt!
  6:17pm
P-90:

Way back in the 60's, the "candy bars laced with LSD" rumor competed with the "razor blade apple" for a few years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Therese's too, Carm! That was terrifying, many of that generation seem to rate that among the scariest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@P-90: And stopped, once the hippies raided all the neighborhood's candy stash looking for those bars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Marcel M:

@Jake: Yeah but they don't use the expression, Laced with do they? Meat laced with GMOs or pesticides haha....
  6:24pm
Dean:

Per OED, from a 1677 issue of Plain-Dealer: "Prithee, captain, let's go drink a dish of laced coffee, and talk of the times." And Thackeray's Henry Esmond, 1852: "Polly loves a mug of ale, too, and laced with brandy."

Michael Myers, who in between revenge rampages got elected to Congress and was expelled for involvement in the Abscam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Dean! - The OED is the best resource for first usages like that!
  6:28pm
JakeGhould:

@MarcelM: “By the spring of the following year (1977), the whirlwind early sales had slipped noticeably in the New York area. Rumors that Bubble Yum contained spider's eggs or legs or was made from their webs abounded. (A less well-circulated rumor had it that the confection caused cancer. It too dates from the same time period.) Schoolyard tall tales about a girl waking up with webs all over her face or nine youngsters dying after swallowing the gum spread quickly among kids and were soon taken as gospel.” www.snopes.com...

P-90:

Is anyone familiar with "Horrortorio", from 1961, it has the familiar Hollywood/Halloween monsters as characters in a classical-style oratorio? It's been recorded a few times I think. Worth checking out, clever, funny, well done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Marcel M:

Why do people love to call rappers artists? Not saying they aren't but its rarely used for other music forms.
Avatar 6:29pm
Carmichael:

I went to the EMP exhibit in Seattle recently, to look at all the vintage guitars. I also found a basement museum of science fiction & horror. Among other things, they had the original flying ball from Phantasm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Marcel M:

@Jake: A rather eldritch rumor!
  6:30pm
Dean:

Agreed, Marcel, although I do wonder whether the earliest usage listed is necessarily the earliest known. I think I've found examples to make my point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
dale:

i hate rap. except for dr. octagon who is just hilarious.
  6:31pm
JakeGhould:

@MarcelM: Is a rapper a vocalist? Or a musician? A bit of both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Marcel M:

I think almost all generes have SOMETHING to offer. Some way less than others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Marcel: That's probably a label thing through most genres of music. Like are you an "artist" (i.e. talent) or are you in management.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

I VANT TO SUCK YOUR BLOOD!...The Vamp Four
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Marcel M:

@Jake: I think they are artists they just refer to themselves as such way more than other genres. Their fans as well.

@Matt: Yeah.. but like, in the rock world it would be the same and you don't hear rockers talking about being artists all the time, you know what I'm saying?
Avatar 6:33pm
Carmichael:

Oh God, I have this 45 from when I was small!
  6:34pm

Except for Lars of Metallica. He refers to himself exclusively as an artist.
  6:34pm
P-90:

"Dracula has risen sketch" voices: Allen Swift, Len Maxwell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Marcel M:

@Dean: True. Probably just has to do with having a big head. Which is kind of part of the whole rap scene. At least in the lyrics.
  6:36pm
Sally:

This is really fun Clay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Marcel: I get what you're saying. Making music is a "musician", but since rap isn't fully music, they emphasize themselves as "artists" instead. (It is better than calling yourself a "street beat vocal poetry technician", though.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Marcel M:

@Matt: Personally I would call rap music....
