Radio Jarocho with Zenén Zeferino Huervo:
Enchanting Son Jarocho of Veracruz, Mexico

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

If you know the song La Bamba, you have heard son jarocho. Ritchie Valens revamped a song from this centuries-old African / European / Indigenous tradition from Veracruz, Mexico and turned it into a pop hit. But there is a lot more to the music than La Bamba. And today a revival has led bands like New York-based Radio Jarocho as well as artists back home in Veracruz like Zenén Zeferino Huervo to update the genre's beloved canon with new songs and new musical twists.

Speaking of beloved Mexican culture, today happens to mark the beginning of Day of the Dead - the three-day Mexican holiday in honor of the deceased. Radio Jarocho, along with acclaimed poet and jarana player Zeferino, will honor the ancestors right here on FMU tonight, as well as at the end of the holiday on Monday night at Terraza 7 in Elmhurst, Queens.

Photo of Radio Jarocho with Zenén Zeferino above is from a recent performance at the NY Botanical Garden, c/o of the Radio Jarocho Twitter feed.

Also tonight: Global sounds for Halloween!

Massive thanks to our illustrious engineer Mario Santana.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm ! I X SpooKey !:

I'm the sonnet "Sonnets/Unrealities XI" by E. E. Cummings!

"Sonnets/Unrealities XI

It may not always be so; and I say

That if your lips, which I have loved, should touch

Another’s, and your dear strong fingers clutch

His heart, as mine in time not far away;

If on another’s face your sweet hair lay

In such a silence as I know, or such

Great writhing words as, uttering overmuch,

Stand helplessly before the spirit at bay;

If this should be, I say if this should be –

You of my heart, send me a little word;

That I may go to him, and take his hands,

Saying, Accept all happiness from me.

Then I shall turn my face, and hear one bird

Sing terribly afar in the lost lands."

What are you?
