That pillars/candy thing sounds like a dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am
Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: You and those SPKs - but perhaps one pillar is stuffed more with sour candies, and another focused on sweet ones. Now, should we tear them down like "tearing" paper, or knock through with a stick, like a piñata?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am
Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: In all likelihood...that sounds like the likeliest answer for the title.
  12:32am
cheri:

bgz, I think they are filled peanut butter m& ms instead!

Folks, I tried to repair this old cassette player I bought in 1995 for like $5 but the belts are rotted and I am not motivated to fix it. So with all these new cassette releases… Who sells new cassette players? I want one.

@JakeGould: The only new cassette players that I've seen are ones that connect to a computer via USB so that people can digitally preserve the content of their old audio cassettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
coelacanth:

hi Christina and others
  12:52am
JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: Yeah, I’ve seen those and have heard mixed things about that. I don’t need a thing with A/D conversion. Just a cassette player. Might need to find some old stereo shop.
  12:53am
JakeGould:

In the South I hear they mock you if you call Pecans “Pea cans.” They’ll say, “A pea can is what you kick down the street!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
mariano:

I'm from New Orleans, and it has to be p'CAHN. Same thing with praline, which down there is prah-LEEN. Once ordering food from a place in Brooklyn, I kept saying pecan pie the Southern way, and the woman had no idea what I was saying till I described it. Oh, PEA-can pie! she said. She told me she thought I was ordering something Chinese!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am
Matt from Springfield:

Catalogue of "poultry-related songs"?? Go on....
  12:58am
JakeGould:

@mariano: Exactly!
Avatar 1:00am
BadGuyZero:

Is owl foul?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Chinese #45: "Pe Con Pi Pan"
Not to be confused with the Pea-can pie, stuffing a whole unopened tin can in a pie crust, like the 3 Stooges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am
Matt from Springfield:

There's an interesting dialect map of "pecan" throughout the U.S. Wisconsin has a totally different one - I asked a co-worker from WI how they say that, and they say "PEA-kon", rhymes with "Mekon".
  1:02am
JakeGould:

“Poultry (/ˌpoʊltriː/) are domesticated birds kept by humans for the eggs they produce, their meat, their feathers, or sometimes as pets.” en.wikipedia.org...

rw:

Pretty sure owls ain't poultry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am
mariano:

@Jake: Hah! That's interesting about the pecan map. I don't even have a Southern accent, but certain things are just said certain ways, end of story: pecan, praline, and of course crawfish.
Avatar 1:03am
BadGuyZero:

@Matt: That's how it's pronounced by most people in Texas. My relatives from Ohio pronounce it "pea can."
Avatar 1:04am
BadGuyZero:

Harry Potter poultry.

JakeGould:

Domesticate an owl and then get back to me on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05am
mariano:

Christina: I'm sure you'll love New Orleans! It's a very fun place, and this time of year it's not too hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am
Matt from Springfield:

@Christina: It NEVER strays far from food, around here! ;)
@BGZ: I only say for "pea can pie", otherwise just "pih'con", like mariano's way but less twang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am
Matt from Springfield:

@mariano: I loved it! I went last May to visit my cousin and see Jazz Fest. I'd better go back in case he decides to move away someday!

@coela: I don't know any of that, but I like the sound of it all! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am
mariano:

@Matt: Glad you had a good time! I'm due for a visit this year, it's been a while. My mom lives in Shreveport now (boring), so that's where I've been going lately. Well, it's unfair to compare S'port to NOLA. It's got some great food and a pretty good music scene. It is the South after all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am
mariano:

And after all, the Residents are from Shreveport originally. And Leadbelly. And boogie woogie started there. That has to count for something.
  1:17am
JakeGould:

@mariano: Wait… All of “The Residents?” They are the great unknown band made up of many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
mariano:

Oh wow, Sweet Sweet Satan would go well on a comp with Lucifer Rise by Imaginary Icons, a band Liz B played a while back. @Jake: apparently they all went to high school together in Shreveport in the 60s then moved to California: en.wikipedia.org...
  1:22am
JakeGould:

@mariano: I don’t know about the provenance of that origin story. But hey, who knows.

Bonjour KP, Roi Pingouin!

KP:
Is that like a Penguin et fromage, Matt?

Matt from Springfield:
@KP: I guess that would be a Croque-Pingouin sandwich--researchers in the French Southern and Antarctic Islands would probably eat those.

KP:
Croque Pingouin Madame or Monsieur?

Matt from Springfield:
@KP: Depends if they find a penguin egg...
  1:24am
rw:

I knew a guy in high school who claimed one of his relatives was a member of the Residents but I never really believed him.
  1:25am
JakeGould:

@BadGuyZero: So it seems that one of the most consistent producers of cassette recorders/players is CALIFONE. The school tape makers. All of them are mono. But some of them are really cheap online and they’re made so kids can deal with them so they are solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
Matt from Springfield:

Wooooooooo! Hardcore Dixieland gospel brass!!!

@rw: Was he from Shreveport?
  1:26am
JakeGould:

@rw: Did that guy in High School also steal a Stormtrooper helmet off of the set of “Star Wars” because he was an extra in the Cantina scene?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am
mariano:

@Jake: To be honest I don't know either, but apparently Homer Flynn, the public face of Cryptic Corporation, is from Shreveport, and he's long been rumored to be a member, but, with those guys, like you said, who knows?

Matt from Springfield:

Tipitina, no less! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am
mariano:

I forget which New Orleanian said it, but s/he said the trick is to look at New Orleans as a high-functioning Caribbean city instead of a dysfunctional American one. It's great to hear all this stuff, Professor Longhair, etc. One thing about NO is that people down there are really into the NO music, so you hear it everywhere, it's a real badge of pride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am
Matt from Springfield:

@mariano: That's a good way of putting it.
Lots of cross-influence over the years too w/ the west Caribbean. I heard that in the 50s and 60s you could listen to AM radio from Jamaica in NOLA, and hear the developing ska and reggae styles. Then of course there's all the gospel and rock we sent down there before that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am
Ken From Hyde Park:

This is like Doctor Romo's Cajun Medicine Show on WVKR 91.3 at Vassar College near me. It's on Thursday mornings 9AM to noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
mariano:

@Matt: that's true, and they could also pick up NOLA radio in Jamaica, and the soul and 50s rock from NOLA had a huge influence on early ska and rocksteady. There's great radio down there too: WWOZ, WTUL from Tulane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am
Christina:

Thanks so much for listening guys! Super excited for NOLA later this month! Also, I can't say any more on air because SHHHHHH but WFMU is fundraising all this month. Shirts and swag abound for the faithful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am
Matt from Springfield:

@Ken HP: Cajun medicine up in Vassar? Wonderful, who knew!
@mariano: WWOZ is a spiritual brother of this station - we hosted their streaming after Katrina, and I think FMU just cross-sponsored something with them. I have their app on my iPhone.

@Matt: Absolutely, I remember that, it was a great thing FMU did.
Avatar 1:50am
BadGuyZero:

@Matt: WFMU and WWOZ are co-broadcasting from the Ponderosa Stomp. WWOZ had a benefit show or two to help out FMU after that jerk Hurricane Sandy messed things up at the station.
  1:52am

@Christina: What does poultry mean to you? Sure as hell ain’t no penguin or owl poultry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am

And I remember their support in turn after Sandy :) WCBN in Ann Arbor was also there afterwards, freeform's gotta stick together!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am

@BGZ: GAH! :P
That's right, the Ponderosa Stomp was a joint project this year.

"The Tingler"! Did they include the "tingler" shock effect on the seats? That would be cumbersome but I've wanted to see that. I'm sure it's public domain/Internet Archive by now.

Was this the Seattle theater that showed old movies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58am

YES! James/"Jimmy" Stewart in "Harvey", with the rabbit. Commenter P-90 filled us in on that a few weeks back.
