Avatar 12:23pm Michael:

Dr. Jazz: Mudd Club, Pyramid, club 57, St. Marks Bar and Grill were old haunts back in the day. Or night rather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Charlie:

Hellooo, Gary the M!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

This is the best dance set I've ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm doctorjazz:

Sounds like lots of it could have been played at those clubs (dating myself, of course!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Charlie:

This was a great time for dance music. No limburger.
Avatar 12:28pm bobdoesthings:

man.. I need more b-52's in my life.

Danceteria, Area, Peppermint Lounge, 8BC... Got some Arto Lindsay?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Parq:

To Laura L's list, may I add Squat and TR3?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm doctorjazz:

I remember seeing Glenn Branca at the Mudd Club, what a set! (then I left, and all my tires were slashed, oh well).
Avatar 12:35pm Prone Nestle:

These styles were not mixed on UK dance floors! No way. Disco and Punk/Post Punk crowds did not get on!
Avatar 12:38pm Nasal Herons:

Ee Aw! I love everything and everyone X
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

irregular working-at-home day today, hallo Charlie and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm doctorjazz:

They mixed these styles for a while in the lower Manhattan clubs, made them much fun.
Avatar 12:40pm Michael:

Max's was still open and I do remember going there a couple of times.
Avatar 12:41pm Peter Nelson:

Coincidentally, I be 52 this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Charlie:

Hi Laura, Mayuko! Yes, there were so many clubs, some of which came and went. And some mixed up the styles, which was cool.
Avatar 12:42pm Peter Nelson:

So I was 16 in 1979. A punk. Much pogoing and spitting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Parq:

The friends I had who were into traditional, Studio-54-style disco showed little interest in and less knowledge of post-punk funk dance music, but then that just may have been my crowd. I wasn't into dance clubs of either kind myself -- I liked live band sets -- so I can't say from first hand knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Charlie:

Peter, so then you'll be a P-52.
  12:48pm flash strap:

jammin at work, great show, makin my day here
Avatar 12:48pm Sarah N:

I'm 50 too.
Avatar 12:49pm northguineahills:

In 1979, I was in my second year of preschool, and mostly listened to Sesame Street jams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm doctorjazz:

And, I saw David Thomas at Danceteria...ahhh.
Avatar 12:49pm Peter Nelson:

Guffaw. Indeed. In the UK a P52 was a piece of paper you got when you left a job stating income for tax purposes.
  12:50pm Laura L:

@ Parq, I didn't go for the dancing either--a happy wallflower during interminable wait for the band to get it together and get onstage--they used to be crazy late going on--Wall of Voodoo at Peppermint Lounge (early 80s) not on til maybe midnight or 1 a.m. seemed typical.
Avatar 12:52pm Peter Nelson:

1979 was also when I started listening to John Peel and got my ears blown open. Heard this album, for instance.
Avatar 12:52pm hambone:

i'd like to go to a ubu dance party
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Parq:

Uggh, Laura, do I I know what you mean. Once, at a short-lived club the name of which I forget, the opening band for the Cucumbers took an hour and a half to get it together, most of which time they spent standing on stage gawking at the audience. The Cukes could do only a 20 minute set before the place's license required them to shut down. Bleah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Charlie:

hi flash strap, Sarah anagram, northguineahills, hambone
  12:55pm sugarwolf:

I'm NGH's age. In 1979 I started nursery school!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Charlie:

Better IB50 than UB40 ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm doctorjazz:

Should I say it...saw ESG back in the day (Cucumbers as well, good album, "Who Betrays Me...", had a self titled one as well, if I remember.

Charlie, Folks.
Brian - the tickets are in the bag and the cat has been let out.
I've got a pal over this evening and we're going out to drink whisky, so please give my apologies and best wishes to Bill, if you're tuning in. Will catch him for the Gaylord fill-in.

The UB40 - the passport to street credibility and cheap tickets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Brian in UK:

I will tell him you have better things to do, I will continue with the ironing.

@Stanley. and getting something to eat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Stanley:

Wish I could tune in to his first show on GTDR. I'm taking out my pal to thank him for his help in this huge roof repair we've got on the go.
Avatar 1:08pm Sue P.:

So funny; I stopped working to check the playlist when that Angie song was playing becuz I was wondering why it sounded like The Who. I guess I've stored the sound of Mr. Townshend's voice in my lizard brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Stanley:

Oh them were the days, what? - Stand down Margaret, stand down please, pot seven quid a quarter, warm beer, jumpers for goalposts.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Brian in UK:

Quid Deal. Great band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm doctorjazz:

Little hint of No Wave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Parq:

Hah, I knew A Certain Ratio had to be on the list.
Avatar 1:21pm northguineahills:

Ah, A Certain Ratio (nice nod to Eno)!
  1:21pm John:

Great show, Charlie! I love the music of this era.
Were you ever into the great, short-lived Philly band, The Stickmen? Their stuff had that NY downtown punk/funk vibe.
  1:21pm rf:

so great today. many many thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Charlie:

Hey all, this is the first day of WFMU's silent fundraiser. The station (and Give the Drummer Radio) starts running out of funds around this time of year and needs to squirrel away some acorns for the winter. If you can make a pledge, we could really use your help! You can click the box at the top of the playlist, or use this link: www.wfmu.org...
There are new t-shirts and other swag. Thanks so much!
Avatar 1:22pm Peter Nelson:

ACR...brilliant live band. At one point in the set they had 3 bass players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Charlie:

hey, rf, john, glad you're digging!
Avatar 1:23pm Bill Mac:

Hi everybody my mind is a blank now but I'm coming to getcha! Tune in once Sir Charles has finished giving his blessings! BTW John, I was a huge fan of the Stickmen, I saw them when the New Era of music began.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Stanley:

  1:25pm sugarwolf:

Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci
Avatar 1:26pm northguineahills:

10 years ago, I dj'ed the same party as Martin Moscrop (ACR), I don't remember his set, as it was one of those nights (It was a good night).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Charlie:

Hey, Bill Mac! Bill's filling in for Matt Fiveash today with a 3-hr program! 2-5PM. So don't go anywhere, y'all. Bill, do you have a playlist link yet? Post if if you've got it.
  1:28pm John:

Bill: Wow! I never got to see them. They were mo-fo musicians!
Ornette Prime Time meets Contortions?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Stanley:

Hi Bill, Howya doing?
I'm hanging on until my friend rolls up. Might have to make my excuses but definitely tune in Sunday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Howdy Charlie & all Nothing-Doers.. '79 was a period of musical rediscovery for me. Like you Charlie, I kinda went dormant during college and missed the CBGB mid-late 70s club stuff. Thanks for bringing a little of it back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm doctorjazz:

Ahh, so this show is like the Public TV fund raisers, when they suddenly pull out the Motown or Beatles show, I get it. Well, it'll work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Stanley:

This Hoof and Mouth lineup is pretty tight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Charlie:

Hey now, Kevin from Bay Ridge.
  1:30pm Gary Mitchell:

I never knew Belinda had this in her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Charlie:

Gary, she also did a cover of "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies one year. It was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Charlie:

Of course, Bill Mac is one of my fave H&M performers!
Avatar 1:33pm Bill Mac:

Thanks to these fine folks for pledging:
Amy from Massachussets, Robert from Brooklyn, our own Peter from Lewes, UK, and Paula from Rhode Island!
Yay!
  1:35pm John:

I'm getting nostalgic, too. It was a little later in this era, but I was working at WDFM (Penn State campus radio) when James Blood Ulmer's Black Rock came in. It blew my mind. It was a synthesis of everything I liked at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm KevinfromBayRidge:

@ Dominick, Nice seeing you at the Ichiban6 on Tuesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Parq:

Charlie, I well remember Belinda's rendition of "Suicidal". As far as I'm concerned, she has owned the song ever since.

And guess wot? It's available for download!
