Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Power Papi:

Awww man, I wanted to know what happened!
Avatar 1:01pm Todd-o-phonic:

Speaking of gay versions, these guys must have really loved Bonanza to be singing so passionately about Lorne Greene!
Avatar 1:01pm Cheri Pi:

I miss the days when tapes could get taped over, remember to pop your tops kids.
Avatar 1:01pm Joe B:

i know, sorry!
  1:02pm Clay:

I remember a regional hit with "Long Green" by The Fireballs (Jimmy Gilmer's back-up band) on ATCO.
  1:05pm Linda Lee:

some of us just love that silver fox ..
Avatar 1:05pm Cheri Pi:

I just found a nice Pioneer double tape deck at the thrift store, time to make tapes for everyone again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Power Papi:

"I'm gonna pop some tabs." Ah, so that's what Macklemore meant!
  1:06pm Linda Lee:

@Cheri Pi .. bet it needs a head cleaning!
Avatar 1:09pm Cheri Pi:

I went over it with some q-tips and it works perfectly, I was suprised, but I have a headcleaner on standby if need be.
  1:10pm Linda Lee:

glad it's working! very lucky!
  1:13pm V Priceless:

Whoa - Freddie Cannon / Los Straight Jackets set sounds like it's gonna be nuts!

Avatar 1:24pm Carmichael:

I think there actually WERE 3 different Grass Roots, if I recall correctly. Rob Grill being the last and best.
  1:27pm frenchee:

whoops, just read Joe's helpful notes
  1:27pm Hackensack Slim:

Hey Joe,
Hope Freddy does this one Friday. See ya there.

Avatar 1:29pm Joe B:

think it's time for a new copy of this one!
Avatar 1:29pm Joe B:

great HS!
Avatar 1:30pm Joe B:

OK - I did play the Sloan vocal of Where Were You ... this was the original demo that appeared on the first LP. They re-recorded it with Bill Fulton for single release, that is the one that charted. then it was re-recorded AGAIN when Rob Grill joined. all 3 versions are on this rev-ola cd reissue
  1:34pm Linda Lee:

i'm really gettin sick kicks today, Mr B! thanks!
  1:35pm Linda Lee:

  1:37pm Linda Lee:

love this version of sweet dreams.
Avatar 1:40pm Todd-o-phonic:

The year was 1966...The Green Bay Packers were champions of the football world...I was on an airplane with Led Zeppelin!
  1:41pm JakeGould:

Ahhh! Born Losers! And Billy Jack’s debut. Always loved how he would get into a fight… Just before the fight he’d just take off his boots and socks and they just let him do that. They respected Hapkido that much.
Avatar 1:47pm KP:

Where Were You is probably the best example of how insular NY radio was at that time. Outside this area, everyone knows that track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Guido from Cologne:

Recently found some Freddy cannon singles for cheap.
Must say the German cover version of "abigail beecher" is hotter.
Avatar 1:49pm Joe B:

great point KP. WABC didn't latch on to many regional folk rockers but was big on Motown, as some lesser hits by the Temps and the like charted higher in NYc than nationally
Avatar 1:49pm TomK:

Hi Joe and all.
Avatar 1:49pm Tomophobic Tom:

Hi Joe and all.
Avatar 1:50pm Joe B:

ha yes Guido! a great one!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Jeff from Rahway:

Oh I love m some Brenda Holloway! I wish I could head south to N.O. Joe, if you run into my old college pal Michael Hurtt tell him I said hello.
Avatar 1:53pm Joe B:

hey Tom!
Avatar 1:53pm Joe B:

and Tom!
Avatar 1:53pm Joe B:

will do jeff
Avatar 1:54pm Joe B:

ha, yes Jake!
Avatar 1:54pm Joe B:

and for those wondering, Todd-o-phonic is quoting some classic Tommy Mclain stage banter
  2:00pm Amy:

This Brenda Holloway set is totally blowing my skirt up today.
Avatar 2:03pm Grok-o-matic:

As usual 3CM with some great stuff. Lovin' it.
Avatar 2:04pm Dr. Goot:

Yeah, lovin' the Brenda set!
Avatar 2:04pm Grok-o-matic:

Anyone listen to Doris Duke? If so, any recommendations on more stuff like hers? Really raw soul. I call it gutter soul, but not sure if that means anything.
Avatar 2:08pm Todd-o-phonic:

@Grok-o-matic: check out Linda Jones' version of "Your Precious Love".
Avatar 2:09pm Tomophobic Tom:

Brenda was a trendsetter. Eventually everbody at Hitsville went to LA.
  2:13pm Linda Lee:

saw PiL in nyc, 81 i think it was ... they didn't give a fart for the audience. don't feel bad Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm doctorjazz:

Hey, fun show! Have to catch Amanda/John Sebastion on Wednesday.
  2:17pm Linda Lee:

do enjoy John Sebastian when he's not sweet.
Avatar 2:18pm Joe B:

Thanks Grok! thanks Amy!
Avatar 2:19pm SmokinJ:

Nice..
  2:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I like the account Lennon was listening to Spoonful & saying - 'Damned songsmiths!'...
Avatar 2:21pm Grok-o-matic:

I know it's completely unrelated, but I saw Kraftwerk last night at The Ryman and I'm still trying to recover. It was so incredible. Also, Neil Young!
Avatar 🎸 2:23pm Joe McG:

@Grok: You might want to try Dave Godin's "deep soul" series of CDs called "Deep Soul Treasures": www.amazon.com...
Avatar 2:25pm Grok-o-matic:

oh nice, thanks for the link. I definitely have a huge list of old soul stuff that's fairly obscure and deep. Always, always looking for more. I'm so amazed sometimes at the sheer amount of old 60s/early 70s soul that I keep finding.
  2:27pm Linda Lee:

brilliant! neil young > charlie feathers
Avatar 2:27pm Joe B:

it is great, just when you think you've ehard it all ...
Avatar 2:28pm Joe B:

thanks Linda but then didn't know where to go from there! figure back to today
  2:29pm Linda Lee:

no worries. it's perfect. .. twin guns vocal sounds like iggy!
  2:35pm rw:

Coffee is loaded with nutrients, right?
Avatar 2:43pm Ken B:

I'd listen to three hours of Gloria versions.
  2:45pm Bluesman:

One day i wanna meet this girl named G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria!

thanks Steve!
Avatar 2:56pm Ken B:

Gloria Gonzales from junior high. She used to play tetherball in a minidress.
Avatar 🎸 2:58pm David Shortell:

I've never heard those Lovin' Spoonful tracks. They must be from their last album "Everthing Playing" which doesn't feature guitarist Zal Yanovsky.
For the story concerning Yanovsky's departure, read Bruce Pollock's 1984 book "When the Music Mattered: Rock In the 1960s".
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Meghan here next week. Have fun in N.O., Joe!
  3:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx JoeB !
Avatar 6:18pm Joe B:

thanks everybody! also, David, Zal is on Six O'Clock but not Mystery. Both charted - Six O'Clock No. 18, Mystery No. 27, and both were probably higher in NYC
Avatar 10:34pm Joe B:

Chris B, sorry I missed you in the shout-outs!
  11:10am waldo:

The 2nd “Where Were You When I Needed You”, the one that hit #28 in 1966 with lead vocalist Willie “Bill” Fulton, is the one you played (Source: liner notes for “The Grass Roots All Time Greatest Hits,” which selected the version you played.) Bill Kelly played the 3rd version with Rob Grill's edgier, more macho vocals, August 3, 2014

Scouring YouTube, FMU last year didn't turn up the P.F. Sloan original for me.

Why was FREDDY CANNON on American Bandstand 100+ times ? ? ? Anybody know ?
