Wikipedia says:

"The album was released in 1990 on Go! Discs in the United Kingdom and in 1991 on London Records in the United States. The album was praised by critics and embraced by fans. It was the result of nearly three years in the studio with a string of acclaimed producers. Each attempted to capture the sound sought by Lee Mavers, the lead singer and principal songwriter of the band.

Unfortunately, due to Mavers' exacting expectations, the sound eluded each of the producers, and the album eventually released was immediately disowned by the band.

A new version of the album, recorded by Mike Hedges (who has also worked with U2, Manic Street Preachers and The Cure) was found on a cassette, this new version was digitally remastered and released for the first time as part of The La's: Deluxe Edition.

This edition also includes previously unreleased archive recordings and radio sessions by the band, as well as deluxe packaging and expanded sleevenotes. The GLR session is a mono reproduction of the right channel only from the original stereo broadcast."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Indie-ish pop group the Mowgli's have the same issue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Ike:

At least the La's have an excuse: Everyone would pronounce it "Las" as in "Las Vegas" instead of as in multiple "La"s if they didn't have the apostrophe. The Mowgli's (sic) (I'm shuddering at having to type it that way) have no such excuse and should be thrown out an airlock near the Planet of Angry English Teachers.
  4:04pm
Dean:

Ike's explanation is more or less in accord with Chicago Manual, which prescribes, "To aid comprehension, lowercase letters form the plural with an apostrophe and an s." The example CM provides is "x's and y's," i.e., plurals of single lowercase letters, but the rationale seems the same. "Mowgli's" is expressly forbidden.

...90° - not 180°?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:06pm
Alison Porchnik:

It should never be aligned with the seam because this increases the chances for spillage and leaks.
  5:06pm
Anonymous Coward:

Thats actually quite smart Irwin, that seam is gonna be prone to leak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Ike:

180° F is for green tea, not coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Irwin:

I drink the coffee quickly enough that it won't leak. I just can't bear the feel of the cup seam on my lip. I also turn around the lampshade here in the studio so the seam doesn't face the DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
Irwin:

RRN63: No, 90 degrees, not 180. That would be pathological.
  5:10pm

Well obviously the lampshade seam is going to be prone to leak evile spirtes into the DJs brain. Dont be crazy Irwin, you're not crazy at all.

"Digital" prepared piano?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
Irwin:

Actually prepared digital piano. My syntactical dyslexia, now corrected.
  5:38pm
Listening Out There:

Some info about that piano: Like the prepared piano, the prepared digital piano feels just like a piano under the hands and often sounds like one, but it is full of surprises; instead of bolts and screws stuck between the piano strings, virtual machines of various sorts adorn the virtual strings of the digital piano, transforming it into an instrument that pushes back, sometimes like a metronome, other times like a recording played backwards. The virtual strings also tighten and loosen on the fly, dynamically tuning in response to what is played. (http://manyarrowsmusic.com/)
