Bobbi gentry. Wow!

what an amazing singer and songwriter.
This great beauty always had this melancholy strain in her songs. And the sophisticated arrangements and jazzy touches.
But then she just up and left- it's been more than 30 years since she even performed.

I cannot recommend strongly enough The Fame Studio Story 1961-73, a 3-disc set on Kent from a few years ago -- every track a gem.

Ed (my own transcription):

At Tuesday's Lincoln Center Out of Doors panel Muscle Shoals guitarist JIMMY JOHNSON recalled recording Wilson Pickett's “Land of 1000 Dances” :

The thing I can remember is how scared I was of Jerry Wexler. Jerry had this vocabulary that was beyond belief. I'd bring a dictionary just to try to figure out what the heck he was saying. He had this accent and all of us learned how to imitate him. “Jim-my, baby. Do you get where I'm coming from?” That would scare us to death. Except he was a brilliant guy. He had a limo. I'd never seen a limo before. He was probably considered the greatest guru presently involved in running a record label. And so here were these little rednecks from Alabama down here scared to hell. But Jerry never tried to intimidate you. We were afraid that he might ask us to do something we couldn't do. One day he come up to me and the first time he said, “Jim-my, give me a little GIGGY-GIGGY GONGY-GONGY.” And I was thinking in my mind, 'What to hell is giggy giggy gongy gongy?” I had never heard anything like that. I was almost in a panic state and I said, “Jerry what do you think about this lick,” and I showed him my lick that I wanted to do on a song. He said, “Jim-my, I like that.” And I wanted to thank the Jesus right there. Amazing enough, the very first song that we cut was “Land of 1000 Dances,” and it was a hit.

JakeGould:

Great Rick Hall interview, but winced a bit at the Southerners and NYC part. I was born here and never held any deep prejudices like that towards the South, Midwest or anywhere else. It actually tends to be transplants coming to NYC to “make it” that perpetuate horrible stereotypes of where they came from; lots of self-hatred there. FWIW, I moved out of the Midwest after living there for 5 years partially because I was tired of people constantly asking why I would move from NYC to the Midwest. I don’t know, cheap living, cleaner cities, nicer people? Anyway, I like the parts of the South that like themselves and respect others.
