'eyyyy charlie!
Avatar 12:01pm Carmichael:

Hey now, Charlie and amigos.
Avatar 12:01pm Sarah N:

Nothing is happening and I love it.
Avatar 12:01pm βrian:

Picking up the ear waves, Charlie. Good afternoon.
Avatar 12:01pm Michael:

Hey there Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Uncle Michael:

Great debut, the other day, Peter!
Avatar 12:02pm Peter Nelson:

@Uncle Michael I'm in the right place then...for nothing.
Avatar 12:03pm Carmichael:

That intro sounded, for just a moment, like Rolf Harris' version of Stairway to Heaven.
Avatar 12:03pm Peter Nelson:

@UncMic Aw, shucks
Avatar 12:03pm ndbob:

afternoon Charlie and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm doctorjazz:

Hi Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Charlie:

Greets, Peter, Uncle Michael, bob(doesthings), Carmichael, Sarah, βrian, Michael, (nd)bob, doctor jazz. I'm so pleased you're all here today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Artie Haywire:

Greetings, Busy Bodies!
Avatar 12:05pm thatpatsmith:

hellooo allll
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Uncle Michael:

I didn't recognize a lot of the music but once I thought to myself, 'gee...this guy sounds a lot like that chap-hop guy'...and it was that chap-hop guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Charlie:

And hi Artie and (that)pat.
"busy bodies" -- haha! I like it.
  12:07pm jan:

Hi Charlie- great to hear ya! did not see the customary email about the show- did it not go out this week?
Avatar 12:08pm βrian:

Professor Elemental. He's our connection to UK culture, don't you know.
Avatar 12:10pm Peter Nelson:

What does 'chap-hop guy' mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Charlie:

Hi Jan -- I sent out the customary e-mail earlier. Glad you showed up, without the prompting :)
Avatar 12:11pm bobdoesthings:

ooooo this is coooool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

Elemental. Aren't he and Mr. B the world's two chap-hop artists?
Avatar 12:14pm Peter Nelson:

Er, ok, but who is Mr B and what is chap-hop?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

This: www.youtube.com...

and this: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

Save for later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Charlie:

βrian -- the phrase "ear waves" inspired me to try to come up with a new catch phrase. All I got was:
"Playin' wax over the waves for your ears, which results in . . . ear wax"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

This is the world's best bed music.
Avatar 12:20pm Peter Nelson:

Just googled. First I've heard of it. I'm pretty much immune to popular culture. I'm deeply distrustful of stuff that a crowd gets behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Uncle Michael:

You seemed to know who Elemental was when you back announced the track he was on.
Avatar 12:23pm Peter Nelson:

Nope...just some guy doing the vocal for Vourteque, who's from Chicago. I'd never heard of him before.
Avatar 12:23pm thedunkel:

yes listening + no commenting = working + enjoying the wax
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Uncle Michael:

It's amazing how the beats you were dropping worked so well for lawn mowing.
Avatar 12:24pm βrian:

There ought to be a Bunny Kick cocktail. Carrot juice would be de rigueur, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Uncle Michael:

I spent some time in Chicago the week before last with someone who will appreciate your show far more than he appreciates mine. I look forward to cluing him in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Charlie:

Well, Uncle Michael, there's no accounting for people's tastes :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Charlie:

Hi, dunkel -- thanks for checking in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry, I meant Peter's show, Charlie. No one doesn't like BDN...or Sara Lee.
Avatar 12:28pm Peter Nelson:

Lovely Asian opening Charlie...which could mean something completely different in another context...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

Haha, yes, I realized that after the fact ! didn't read back far enough.
Avatar 12:29pm Sarah N:

Ping pong balls!
Avatar 12:33pm Sarah N:

Love the painting Charlie - I just followed the link to the fantastic rhino picture! Wonderful. Hilarious.
Avatar 12:35pm Sarah N:

Wow! Corinne Geersten. Motherlode.
Avatar 12:35pm Peter Nelson:

Ubu!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Charlie:

Oh boy, Ubu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Charlie:

Sarah -- glad you looked at Corinne Geersten's site -- she does such great work!
Avatar 12:40pm Sarah N:

I love old photos of ancestors. What she's done with hers is just fab.
Avatar 12:40pm βrian:

Charlie, you are *working* that dowsing stick today.
Avatar 12:42pm Peter Nelson:

Hmm. I don't have that Ubu album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Charlie:

Peter -- I like it a lot, also their latest, Carnival of Souls.
Avatar 12:44pm Peter Nelson:

Or that New Age Steppres....I do remember Peel playing it when it first came out. Odd for the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

Carnival of Souls is terrific.
Avatar 12:45pm Peter Nelson:

Everything by Ubu is terrific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Charlie:

Yeah, Uncle, I remember you playing it when it had just come out I think.
Avatar 12:45pm Sarah N:

Corrine's work keeps reminding me of a painting, which I've now located - Grant Wood's "American Gothic" (1930). My eyes are smiling as well as my ears. Thanks Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

I play new things...sometimes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Charlie:

lol, me too! 1955 right now ;)
Avatar 12:47pm βrian:

It's always new to somebody.
Avatar 12:54pm Michael:

Charlie - Irwin played Partch yesterday inspired by the same performance. Great minds etc...
www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Charlie:

Exactly, βrian. I love 'discovering' 'new' music from whenever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Charlie:

Michael -- Irwin is probably WFMU's biggest Partch fan, so I'm not surprised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Mike East:

Partch performance going on today and tomorrow...the pics make me sad I can't go: lincolncenterfestival.lincolncenter.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Mike East:

also, hello...I've been lurking
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

Did you know that Virgil was Harry's cousin?

www.tcj.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Charlie:

Hi, Mike East, thought I saw you in the shadows there. Yes, the pix are enough to make one salivate.
Avatar 1:02pm bobdoesthings:

is this a 'koto' she's playing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Charlie:

Koto it is, bobdoing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Charlie:

Wow, Uncle Michael -- great stuff! I was not familiar with Virgil Partch -- will look in depth when I have time, ty.
  1:05pm jan:

Miya Masaoka - great track to follow Partch! More info please
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Charlie:

Jan -- I don't know that much about her other than that she plays contemporary music on the koto. also does koto/computer pieces, and has done a piece where electronics are altered by laser beams or something like that. I do know that Harry Partch was heavily influenced by Chinese and other Asian music, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Uncle Michael:

Miya is a facebook friend, mainly because she participated in Other Minds this spring, a festival my uncle founded. I don't know her. I know at least one FMU dj is a friend of hers. I love what I've heard.
Avatar 1:11pm bobdoesthings:

thomas stronen... gnarly.. thought this was a gang gang dance track.. coool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Mike East:

D.B. is gonna be in here tomorrow (rehearsing). currently setting up for it.
  1:20pm testingwithfire:

late again ... relieved that pere ubu is around if you know what i'm saying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Charlie:

welcome, testingwithfire -- and, yes, i know what you mean. and their last two albums have been reassuringly great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

I'm thinking 'pho'. Anyone else thinking 'pho'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Charlie:

Mike East -- that's cool. should be inneresting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

Peter, are you still here? I shared your playlist page with my friend in Chicago. He told me he's known Joe Vourteque for about 15 years.
  1:26pm jan:

Zep- what record was this on? Before they went metal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Mike East:

pho sounds good. I've got pasta with mussels eggplant and basil, though. Leftovers...trying not to spend money.
Avatar 1:28pm northguineahills:

Pulling out the hits!
Avatar 1:28pm Davis:

ah, glorious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Charlie:

Uncle M -- pho, yes, please, and thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Charlie:

Jan - Houses of the Holy, their 5th (?) album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Charlie:

and hello NGH and Davis
Avatar 1:33pm Davis:

hello, i like this set a lot
Avatar 1:40pm Peter Nelson:

@UncMic Yep. still here. From what I read, he's changed styles a lot. Used to be a club DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Brian in UK:

Hello Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Charlie:

Hello Brian Brain Brawn Brine.
Avatar 1:48pm βrian:

Found salvation in a nice Thai salad. Ready to have my ears sullied again.
Avatar 1:49pm bobdoesthings:

whats on a thai salad?
Avatar 1:50pm northguineahills:

Not ready to eat, but I have huitlacoche pasta waiting for me in the fridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Mike East:

windsor knots
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Mike East:

sorry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Charlie:

Peanut dressing and potato chips
Avatar 1:51pm bobdoesthings:

@northguineahills - just googled "huitlacoche" and "corn smut" came up.. a diseased corn??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Great stuff today, Charlie. I'll see you all in the funny-papers.
Avatar 1:52pm bobdoesthings:

oh .. you can eat it.. weird. let me know how the diseased corn is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Charlie:

Thanks for being here, Michael -- have a great show tomorrow.
Avatar 1:52pm sugarwolf:

hello again, went into town to get the mail, ran into a friendly cat and had a conversation with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks!
Avatar 1:53pm βrian:

And, of course, the best smut grows on hard pore corn.
Avatar 1:54pm northguineahills:

It's a fungus that grows on corn, it makes the kernels bulbous and black. It's really tasty. They throw it away here in the US, but it's a delicacy in Mexico, and farmers encourage it to grow.
Avatar 1:54pm Peter Nelson:

...several fab covers later...
Avatar 1:55pm βrian:

This Thai salad has shredded lettuce, cilantro, avocado, and crushed peanuts with a sweet/sour dressing. (A little fish sauce in there.)
Avatar 1:55pm northguineahills:

I have my wife's mother mail us cans of it. But, I just found a store in my neighborhood that has fresh and canned huitlacoche, so I'm stoked!
Avatar 1:56pm bobdoesthings:

@northguinea.. i'll have to try sometime! cool.

@charlie - great show! thanks so much
Avatar 1:56pm northguineahills:

Thanks for a wonderful afternoon, Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Mike East:

was listening to a david bowie dj set on bbc from 1979 yesterday and he played 20th century boy (og version). Really dig that cover, Charlie.
  1:57pm jan:

I had no idea that something like Rain Song would have been made by Zep so late in their oeuvre, but then again, they lost me with the advent of the 2nd album. Heavy Metal was never sounded good to my ears.
Avatar 1:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Charlie:

sugarwolf -- always nice to have a conversation with a cat! I had a nice talk with a dragonfly yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Charlie:

Thanks all for being here today -- you made it more familiar :)
Avatar 1:59pm βrian:

I found some little pieces of paper, about a half-inch square, that had nice dragonfly images on them.
Avatar 1:59pm northguineahills:

@bobdoesthings: It goes well w/ quesadillas.
Avatar 2:00pm Michael:

Thanks Charlie - go out and enjoy the lovey day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Mike East:

real cool show today, Charlie. Thanks for spinning the hits!
