Great yet under-appreciated Genre(s) - amazing obscure under-exposed rekkids (each & every week) - one quick solid hour w/ absolutely no filler : Success.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Honky Tonk Radio Girl:

Haha, it's a great one, @djsheilab, by Ann Jones, one of my King Records heroes!

Reading up on Hamtramck, Michigan and this seems pretty interesting, “Hamtramck was originally settled by German farmers, but Polish immigrants flooded into the area when the Dodge Brothers plant opened in 1914.” And then this, “Over the past thirty years, a large number of immigrants from the Middle East (especially Yemen), South Asia (especially Bangladesh), and Southeastern Europe (especially Bosnia and Herzegovina) have moved to the city. As of the 2010 American Community Survey, the city's foreign born population stood at 41.1%, making it Michigan's most internationally diverse city.” en.wikipedia.org...

Who's seen the doc 'Sgt. Fitch: The Legacy of Sarg Records'? The film altered my ideas about the Genres that went into forming Rock'n'Roll (& how), the history of Texas music - & would appeal to crate diggers, Doug Sahm enthusiasts, Country fans - gives insight into relations of Artists & Labels, &tc.
  7:33pm
JakeGould:

That Hamtramck is pretty much my demographic… Just the lack of Jews. But hey.
  7:33pm
JakeGould:

@RR63: Good tip!

As I recall from my Detroit days, cultural celebration fairs are popular in Hamtramck.

Willie! Did he ever duet with Ray Price on this song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Honky Tonk Radio Girl:

Indeed! I saw it with my own eyes once on a tour with Merle Haggard!!
  7:40pm
JakeGould:

Maybe I can pioneer opening a knish place in Hamtramck?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
sweeks:

Whoa! What a trip, Becky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Honky Tonk Radio Girl:

@Jake, I don't know about knishes specifically, but the surrounding Detroit metro area has a great history of Jewish delis...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
pacific standard simon:

I was bragging to one of the fellas at work about this great new country show on WFMU, and he tuned in a show called Swinging Doors on KEXP (which is local for me). It was good, all right, but not like this.
  7:44pm
cheri:

before I check out becky, keep the tunes going. bye
  7:45pm
Wally:

Disgraced financier Ivan Boesky's family owned one of Detroit's storied Jewish delis.

Y'all might want to check out Joe Bussard's "Country Classics" radio show too. You can find it online. He's a real old timer, 78 collector, and he plays a lot of good stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
pacific standard simon:

@ sweeks - thanks for the tip!
  7:48pm

Becky, this show is so effing great.

DanH:

@Becky, have you ever heard the Nick Cave version of Long Black Veil?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
pacific standard simon:

This version is mighty peculiar. Almost seems cheerful.
  7:52pm
JakeGould:

Whoa! I suggested that Mary Wing do a “Three of a Kind” with “Long Black Veil” based on my love of the Nick Cave version. Instead of just 3 covers she played 14 (!!!) covers just a few weeks back. Here is the link to the show. wfmu.org...
  7:52pm
herb.nyc:

great version (Nick's too)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
DanH:

@JakeGould, I think the Nick Cave version is better than Johnny Williams. It really captures the mood and feeling of the song a lot better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Honky Tonk Radio Girl:

@DanH I have! My favorite is the Marijohn Wilkin version (she wrote it!).
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
DanH:

@Becky, I always thought Lefty Frizzell wrote it.
  7:56pm
JakeGould:

@DanH: The version on Johnny Cash’s “At Folsom Prison” is pretty decent. Also, I always thought Lefty Frizzell spawned the song. He was the first to sing it, but she wrote it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
pacific standard simon:

This song earns a star!
  7:59pm
cheri:

it's great to have you here, becky! night

is_potato:

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Paul Simon?!?! No way. Really? Wow. Dip me in slop if that just doesn't make my jaw drop in astonishment. I'd like to hear more of True Taylor.

Anyway, I just heard a great cover of Tom T Hall's "Turn It On, Turn It On, Turn It On" done by Charlie Sizemore. Look for it, you might like it.
