Favoriting June 23, 2015: Left In The Lurch!

TONIGHT: LEFT IN THE LURCH!
LATE-BREAKING NEWS: Because he bailed on me, I'm changing the subject of tonight's show, which was to feature my cousin J.D.in the studio for a look at cousins, family, etc., to a discussion of those times you've been bailed on or had to bail on someone and those time you've been kept waiting or kept someone waiting.

I'd love to hear from you tonight - so don't keep me waiting: call 201-209-WFMU and DON'T BAIL.
Last Week: The Unbreakable Miss Lovely
Last week's show featured a return by Tony Ortega, executive editor of Raw Story and former editor of the Village Voice, who's been investigating Scientology for twenty years and whose website The Underground Bunker documents the outrages of the "Church" Tony updated us on what's been happening in Scientology since the film Going Clear made it to HBO.

We also discussed Tony's new book - The Unbreakable Miss Lovely - about the journalist Paulette Cooper (pictured above), who wpote incurred Scientology's full wrath and was driven to the brink of suicide.

Here are some playlist comments:
  • Hey wait a minute! "Battlefield Earth" is an incredible movie. And some FMU DJ's have played Scientology music, some by EL Ron himself.
  • "The Guardian's Office.": sounds like an Ian Fleming name for a secret brotherhood of assassins. Or a sinister conspiracy investigated by John Steed and Mrs. Peel.
  • Organizations with secrets are bad. Stay away from them. How did Scientology last this long? Where do they get money? I have to see this movie.
  • Hey Chris! Hubbard owned a Mellotron, legend has it! Ha!
  • Couple years ago at a friends house I was ranting about Scientology, and my friends mother says "my neighbors are scientologists and they're perfectly lovely people."
  • Organizations with secrets are bad. Stay away from them. How did Scientology last this long? Where do they get money? I have to see this movie.
  • Hubbard was also a student of the recruitment, initiation, manipulation, and brainwashing techniques of modern intelligence services.
The Mermaid Parade Was GREAT!
The Mermaid Parade was a blast, despite the drizzle that fell on and off throughout (click on the Raymond Adams shot, above, to see more of his pics and ton of others on the Coney Island Mermaid Parade Facebook page).

Sea creatures are used to getting wet and - believe me - it's rained much harder in years previous, so I was fine with it (but I probably shouldn't have worn the suede boots).

I used Periscope to provide behind-the-scenes report and it worked well until the parade actually began. Then I couldn't get a broadcast initiated, probably due to bandwidth issues. Sorry about that. My Periscope account has a bunch of parade day videos up there, if you'd like to peep a few. Just download Periscope for iOs or Android and search for my user name, @christsakis.

As I said throughout the parade, coneyisland.com now has a Donation Wall. If you'd like a plaque up there, show them some monetary love and I'll do a special shout-out to you next year!

Morgan:

wow, chris...unless you've met that broad that your cousin is interested in, that was a pretty harsh characterization of her. Can't you just say he's aching to get laid and not blame some evil woman for his choices?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
dale:

morgan may be right. why else would you go to see lady gaga?
  6:39pm
Viewer Paula:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Chris - The next person that says to get over it, give the phone a big yank like Moe from The Three Stooges used to do. They'll smash their head into the wall on the other end.
  6:42pm
Viewer Paula:

I got mad at the get over it lady too. She sounded drunk though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
micah:

hey chris. I have no tolerance for flakey people as well. I mean sometimes its unavoidable but the way it sounds your cousin could have avoided leaving you in the lurch at the last minute. and everyone who complains that "its not funny" can f*&k off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm

Lurch: A sudden or unsteady movement.
  6:51pm
P-90:

Actually, "bailing" in this sense is more of a reference to "bailing out of a plane"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
dale:

jake from state farm?
  6:52pm
JakeGould:

P-90, but as I said it is all the positive side of a negative scenario. All desperate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Another usage for bail is using a bucket or a pump to get water out of a boat.
  6:52pm
JakeGould:

@Dale: That was me. From the State of Brooklyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
DanH:

Lurch: the butler from the Adams Family.
  6:53pm
JakeGould:

But all of those definitions are based in desperation.
  6:53pm
Jack:

A bail is also a part of a spinning reel, for fishing.
  6:53pm
JakeGould:

Someone make some cartoon about Lurch and his cute dog pal Bail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Also, thanks for not playing Lady GaGa for the background music.
