This Usha Uthup track on the stream is delightful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am Doug Schulkind:

I hope you're singing along, Listener James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am Doug Schulkind:

The name Usha Uthup makes me think of the Mets' erratic relief pitcher Ugueth Urbina. He had four or five siblings and all their first names started with U.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am Doug Schulkind:

And middle names, too, if I remember correctly. (His full name was Ugueth Urtaín Urbina.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:49am listener james from westwood:

There's something to be said for a pattern!
Avatar 8:54am ausmanx:

not much to be said for pattens, though. they always look damn uncomfortable. good evening from chilly antipodes, where we had floods this week. even bits of Sydney were evacuated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am Doug Schulkind:

U think this song is about u, don't u?!

@ausmanx
Yikes! Hope you're high and dry. Or at least dry.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Brian in UK:

Doug, really enjoying the new Tommy B.

Spare a thought today for all the Armenians killed 100 years ago by the Ottomans. How is this for a cop out. The Turks say that the word genocide was not invented then so they are not guilty of it. THe moustache is still alive and well in Turkey, not sure what that means.
Avatar 🥁 10:43am βrian:

Somewhere I have an album of music based on the tradition of the troubadours. The bombarde figures large.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43am Alex In Illinois:

Okay, I was not exactly correct the first time. βrian was. It is the very reedy oboe like thing played along with the French (Breton) bagpipes. On Wikipedia, there is a photo of a French bagpiper and bombard player playing side-by-side as they walk down a street.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

@Brian in UK
Yes, the new Brosseau brew goes down nice.

Partial credit to Alex in Illinois! (βrian wins the Kewpie® Doll.)
Avatar 10:45am Flash Strap:

The word genocide was invented specifically to describe what the Turks did to the Armenians, so I believe the shoe fits. It was custom-made. And with that, I must leave for work
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:46am Alex In Illinois:

Turkish law prohibits its citizens from telling things that paint anything Turkish in a negative way, which is a way for them to ban mentioning the Genocide without acknowledging that it occurred, and a way to require Turkish citizens to deny it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Jeff Golick, are you familiar with the Shibusashirazu Orch? Oh em gee are they fantastic. Listener Hugo turned me onto them. Worth seeking out.

Avatar 🥁 10:54am βrian:

This must be the Lullaby segment of the show ...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:56am Alex In Illinois:

I agree, Ausmanx. To suggest so is to ignore the many Turkish soldiers who adopted orphaned Armenian children and raised them as their own. I am letting many Turkish citizens off the hook by pointing out that they have to live in fear of punishment for mentioning it. Also, in the US, the state of Oklahoma has banned teaching Advanced Placement History in its public schools because it mentions "too many negative things about America". So U.S. conservatives are not much different from those in the Turkish government.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:58am Jeff Golick:

And don't mess with Mr. In-Between, @Alex.

I mentioned, on Charlie's playlist yesterday, having seen "Don't Think I've Forgotten". A lot of what comes out of it is how little any regime change is meaningfully more than meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Ironically, what Pol Pot did is often described as genocide, when it was in a strange way just the opposite; he believed (or at least held himself out as believing) that killing 1.2 million of his countryman would be the salvation of their race.

@Mike East
My daughter just called from the nurse's office at school. She's coming home sick.

Nice to see you, Mick Humphreys' face!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12am Alex In Illinois:

@ndbob: Okay, so the decision of the Oklahoma legislature to ban teaching "negative" US history is not quite as extensive as the Turkish ban on mentioning anything negative in Turkish history or Turkish current situations, but it is still the same idea. The Oklahoma law is the same attitude as that of Sean Hannity and the Fox News crowd saying that liberals "hate America" for mentioning anything negative in U.S. History.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

I'm almost done reading a magisterial work of US history about the Great Migration: WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS. It's hard to keep from crying. If you see me with it on the subway, I'm usually shaking my head in sad amazement and the depths folks will go to in expressing their hatred and fear. And also at the vitality and strength and courage of those that face oppression.

  11:24am Dean:

Speaking of obituaries, I was stunned to read of M.H. Abrams' death at 102. Stunned, because I wasn't even sure he was alive in the first place, but also because he lived such a long, full life. We read of the death of the humanities these days. The loss of Abrams is a concrete, unavoidable example.
