Hi Therese! Heard you had a guest tonight? Lovin' this B-52s tune, btw. =D

I had a dream Saturday morning that ended with the B-52s playing Planet Claire.

I paid my WFMU pledges. No reason you jabronis should be slacking. Get those pennies counted toot sweet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 12:43am Ike:

Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, @Jake? Payment links might not have even gone out yet. Ain't nothing wrong with pledging by check or money order. That way FMU doesn't pay CC fees. Actually, all pledges used to be "pay later (by mail)." Paying RIGHT NOW via the web is a fairly new development.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 12:43am Zero Gallbladder:

This was one of the tracks that first appeared in the "Star Time" box set. There were a few other tracks from the same concert. Polydor received so many letters begging them to release the entire Paris 1971 show. Several months after the release of "Star Time" our patience was rewarded with the release of "Love Power Peace." Both the box set and the live CD are "must own" releases in my opinion.

Y'all had better git on up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 12:54am JakeGould:

@Ike: Well, we can all have a long debate over CC fees/PayPal fees versus the time/cost of processing a piece of paper. Regardless, I paid already thus I am clearly superior to you. Nyeah.

@Jake, also, muchas gracias re: your comment during Mandl's show; nice to know.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 12:57am JakeGould:

@Ike: No problem. The thing about alternative music is you generally should support it if you are a fan, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should like it yourself. Go team!

Hi M A R Y!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:02am JakeGould:

Ooo! Therese, you got into the B-52s around “Cosmic Thing?” Odd to think that was a first exposure to the B-52s.
Avatar Mon. 3/30/15 1:03am Mary Wing:

What album did you get her to sign, all of them? And do you get a physical copy of her solo album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:03am JakeGould:

But who am I since I only got into the Kinks after hearing “Lola” a few times and Van Halen’s cover of “You Really Got Me.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:05am Ken From Hyde Park:

The gym where I go occasionally plays "Deadbeat Club" and also "Roam."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:05am Therese:

She signed my Rock Lobster/52 Girls single!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:06am Therese:

Jake- I immediately sought out everything that had come before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:08am JakeGould:

@Therese: It’s cool. Not trying to be some clove cigarette smoking elitist snot. Respect on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:08am Ike:

My high school friends got into the B-52s w/that album too, Jake. But unlike Therese, I don't think they ever worked their way back to the early stuff like "Rock Lobster," which blew my mind the first time I heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:11am JakeGould:

The first time I heard about the B-52s was when I called up one of the neighborhood tough guys who was a friend to this geek. He worked for a scalper and I wanted to score Rush tickets during the “Grace Under Pressure” tour. He blew me off, but got me in direct contact with the scalper. But while we were talking he basically said, “Why do you listen to that junk? You should listen to stuff like this… They’re using a toy piano…” And it was “Dance This Mess Around” over a phone. So exposed to the B-52s and then got in direct contact with a paranoid scalper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:11am JakeGould:

Oh and “this geek” means me. <--
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:12am Therese:

That is AMAZING.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:12am Gaylord Fields:

Sorry I ruined your awesome family story with my fact checking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:13am Therese:

I wasn't going to name names, Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:15am JakeGould:

The paranoid scalper story is better. But will save that for my own memoir-ish art project stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:15am JakeGould:

Also, that Narwhal she just did made me literally gasp. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:16am Irwin:

Great conversation with Kate, Therese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:16am Gaylord Fields:

I'm not worried. In a few years my name will be replaced by someone more famous in the telling of who ruined your family's Nancy Sinatra story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:17am Therese:

Never!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:17am Therese:

And thanks, Irwin!
Avatar Mon. 3/30/15 1:27am Paul D:

When did Kate Pierson visit WFMU? Man I've been a fan since 1991!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:28am Andrew Waterloo:

Must say my first exposure to B-52s was Love Shack, also one of my earliest memories of watching music videos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:30am Ken From Hyde Park:

I think "Wolves" would fit nicely into some movie soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:32am Zero Gallbladder:

In the early 90s there was a speed/thrash metal band in Houston called Dead Horse. They covered "Rock Lobster" on their major label debut "Peaceful Death & Pretty Flowers."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:33am JakeGould:

@ZeroGallbladder: Dead Horse. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Mon. 3/30/15 1:39am Mary Wing:

Surely you took a photo with Kate, Therese?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:40am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

Great conversation, which reminded me of high school dances in rural AZ in the mid-80s when we would almost start fights between the few new wavers who would go "down down down" & eventually imitate seizures on the floor during that part of the song -- only to leap back into action when the chorus kicked back in -- and the jocks who wanted to beat us up for being so weird (and for requesting a song they never could wrap their meaty heads around). I think we had to supply our own 45 of the song. So thanks for the memories! Was that "down down down" routine just something we made up or was that widespread on American high school dance floors?
Avatar Mon. 3/30/15 1:43am Mary Wing:

My friends and I would flop down on the floor, too. I think it was a fairly common occurrence among fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:44am Therese:

I remember the "down, down, down" flopping as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:46am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

I think I learned it at orchestra camp. I can't imagine anyone from my hometown could have transmitted it. It felt like secret knowledge -- what you were supposed to do if you knew the song -- but maybe it was just spontaneous. I do remember that it divided the dancefloor, between people who would flop and people who wouldn't. Glad to know you were floppers, Mary & Therese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:46am JakeGould:

@Mary: Yeah, it was common back then but not really accepted. Still geek culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:47am Ken From Hyde Park:

I'll plug the motels - www.lazymeadow.com
At the disco I went to, people would get down to knee level but not flopping. The dance floor was too crowded.

What kind of reaction did Kate have to the velvet painting gallery? Did Velvet GG Allin frighten her?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:50am Therese:

Not much of a reaction to GG Allin, but she and Monica both commented on the Kim Jong Il/Sleestak diptych.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

Clay Pigeon probably passes by it on the way to Margaretville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:52am Therese:

Ken- my brain misread Margaretville as Margaritaville and I was VERY confused for a moment.
Avatar Mon. 3/30/15 1:53am Paul D:

I want to visit Lazy Meadow! I remember buying wild planet and the first album on a two album cassette and listening to it on my walkman non stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 3/30/15 1:54am Zero Gallbladder:

Clay Pigeon is wasting away in Margaretville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 1:55am Gaylord Fields:

I can wholeheartedly recommend a stay at Kate's Lazy Meadow, especially after a few days of roughing it in a tent.
Avatar Mon. 3/30/15 1:56am Paul D:

I believe it Gaylord!

Therese, I just found your interview w/ Kate Pierson at the last minute. Did Kate say anything about The B-52's ever recording another new album after their last fab album, Funplex in 2008 ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 2:05am JakeGould:

Also, just so people have perspective on how “weird” the 1980s were… Fred Schneider—if I recall correctly—went out of his way to attack any journalist who implied he was gay. Think about that for a second. Whole other world/era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 3/30/15 2:05am Fuzzy:

Just some sweet vinyl crackle to warm yer hearts and ears!

At 2:45:35, there's a song after "Soft Collection" and before Therese's break that's not shown in the playlist. It's very Stone Roses sounding and Google/Bing fails when I looked up the lyrics. Delving into Nic Hessler's album, however, I found that it's a hidden bonus track titled "Disappear". FYI.
