Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from February 6, 2015 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Dude, Hinky Dinky Time rules and all, but you mustn't ever play Xmas songs out of season! Even if they're ostensibly about the weather! It's against the nature of things!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Lane Steelpicker:

Wilson, point of order: Let it Snow is a winter song. And I like this steel version of Snowbird. Wish Michael wouldn't talk over the pedal steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Uncle Michael:

You only have to put up with my winter music for six more weeks.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Alex In Illinois:

It's not an Xmas song. It's snow song, or winter song as Lane jut stated. When I was a kid watching the evening news for school closings, they would show the names of the schools scrolling upwards over a background of falling snow while playing that song, even if in February or March.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Uncle Michael:

I'll let you know that I had two other seasonal music beds in mind for winter but could find instrumental versions of neither of them. They were Neil Young's "Winterlong" and Tommy Roe's "It's Now Winter's Day."
Avatar 12:31pm
Wilson K:

Friends, let's all admit "Let it Snow" is a weather song AND a Christmas song. Otherwise you'd be hardpressed to explain its ubiquity in the Christmas catalog.

So stipulated.

It's a dessert topping AND a floor wax! And hear, hear to the ruling status of HDT!

Ah, tender young Alice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Stevel:

"Let it Snow" is a cheerful acceptance of the undeniable fading of the light, heat and, of course, life itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Mike East:

Screw the snow, man. Makes winter so much harder than it already is. Miami, here I come.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Stevel:

Hmmmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Lane Steelpicker:

HDT rules. The fact that the Santa/Baby Jesus cabal has subsumed winter/snow songs should not change the identity of the Winter/Snow songs. For that matter, my Idol even contributed to that appropriation. Buddy Emmons put Sleigh Ride on his Christmas album. But there's neither Santa nor Jesus in it

Parq, there's something about being good with lyrics. As Steve Martin said in Roxanne, A few frilly words, and you're counting ceiling tiles

Do you subscribe to that theory, Dean?

Lane Steelpicker:

Michael, it's POSSIBLE that it was faked, but highly unlikely.
1) the pedal steel tonality in the midst is almost unique
2) I thought I heard a couple of instances of two notes bending at different rates. A slide guitar with a B-bender COULD do that, but they'd have to be pretty damn good.
I'll give it a cynical listen looking for fakery. But my on-the-fly ear says it's a pedal steel, probably a Zum, Franklin or Emmons (modern guitar, not a 60s honky-tonk hero)
