I got that feedback too, now being a constant listener, I really didn't mind

I was about to suspect, this schedule shift is causing serious victims ... angry listeners, frustrateted station manager, injured DeeJays ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30am
Guido from Cologne:

If you were playing Vivaldi I'd be sure you're having pizza quattro stagioni ... [stupid-joke-alert]

Hiya, Scott. Good day, euro-people, and non-euro-people alike.

Scott McDowell:

Question of the day for you listeners. Do you enjoy classical music and if so who do you like?
  6:35am
Emile:

Somewhat mournful but seems appropriate for this Thanksgiving, I don't know. But it's pretty, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36am
Guido from Cologne:

This kind of chamber music is perfect with me, seriously.
  6:36am
Emile:

I like classical. And I like the Archie Shepp to this transition.
  6:37am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Good day, Scott, and thanks for the Shostakovich. Not enough chamber music on WFMU! A shame I missed Archie Shepp. Enjoy your day off, American listeners!
  6:38am
marmalade kitty:

Just been looking at all of our world cup predictions on the may fill in show. Scott you were closest with your Germany and England prediction!
  6:39am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I like a lot of "early music" (what a terrible classification): John Dowland, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Perotin, Guillame DuFaye
  6:40am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Oh, and Hildegaard von Bingen. Celestial choral sounds.
  6:40am
Mark:

LOVE classical music and love that you've blended into a show with Grachan Moncur, Archie Shepp, et. al. I know it's trite to say you love Beethoven, but I do--the piano sonatas especially. Love the French romantics like Debussy. Love Ravel. Only recently discovered a composer named John Foulds. Arvo Part. Oh, I could go on and on.Cool show you're doing, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40am
Guido from Cologne:

I have an affection for early 20th Century modernists.
  6:41am
Mark:

You not only play great music, but you're wise, too. Great Thanksgiving family advice.
  6:46am
Emile:

For me, classical music older than 1900 is reserved for the Sunday morning coffee part of my brain. I don't put it on to listen to actively. But modern classical, avant-garde classical from the last century onwards I find very rewarding and often challenging. From Ives onwards, basically. Then from the 50's it's a whole new world with Cage, etc. I will throw on a Morton Feldman string quartet occasionally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46am
Scott McDowell:

Not sure about that, Mark! haha. Maybe this show should be like Ann Landers. need any advice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47am
Scott McDowell:

@marmalade kitty ---- I don't recall what I said, I did call England going out early I think. I also had Brazil Argentina in the final!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48am
Guido from Cologne:

My own personal all time favorite modernist chamber work:
5 Pieces Op 34 by Alfredo Casella (composed around 1919)
as perfomed by New Music String Quartett (NY) on Bartok Records.
The original LP seems to be pretty rare, but re-issued on Naxos-download-label.
Unfortunately the original 50ies cover art is missing.

Morning everyone -- how nice to fire up the WFMU and hear Bill Dixon this morning!
Avatar 6:51am
adrian in mpls:

and to answer the question of the day -- those late Beethoven string quartets are absolutely killer. i like the takacs quarter versions -- they tend to emphasize the rawness of those pieces.
  6:52am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Orlando Gibbons is another oldie to check out. I've realised that almost all the classical music I like is either post-1900 or pre-1700. That's not to dismiss those two centuries between which most people think of as "classical" - Bach's less bombastic compostions are well worth exploring (the Goldberg Variations, for example).
  6:53am
Emile:

Yes, the cavatina, the most beautiful 6:00 of music ever composed.
Avatar 6:58am
BEAVO:

Glenn Gould claimed His favorite composer was Gibbons. And recorded an a rennasaince album of mostly his work.

Harpsichord rock!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58am

Doomy proto-modernist late Franz Liszt piano pieces.
Heitor-Villa-Lobos .... "Uirapurú", "The Child's Dolls" and the guitar etudes.

You put together a brilliant playlist Scott
Avatar 7:06am
pierre:

answer to question of the day : I love classical music, that include but not only : Edward Grieg, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Chopin, Smetana, Stravinsky, Dvorak, Prokofiev, Debussy, Satie… so many good stuff ! And Opera as well. I think I started listening to that through O.S.T.s (Kubrick, Disney's Fantasia…)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06am
Scott McDowell:

cheers, Jared!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am
Scott McDowell:

I agree Pierre, lots to wade through. Endless.
  7:13am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Scott I've found the streaming music site last.fm to be very helpful for navigating the vast ocean of classical sounds. You can put three composer names into its "multi-artist radio" option and it then endlessly churns out works by "related" composers (and the love/hate buttons allow you to refine your profile so that it becomes uncannily capable of playing you what you're going to like).
Avatar 7:14am
pierre:

I remember hearing that a lot of composers from the east of Europe include traditional and folk music in their compositions, thus giving a sort of nationalist touch to their music… I I remember thinking "this is why I like it, this music is suppose to raise some kind of grand emotion" a lot of emotion that we hear through classical compositions are link to history and geography (and I believe through "pop culture" too), I find this fascinating.

That being said i absolutely not feel connected to any nationalist political opinions.
Quite the contrary actually.
  7:17am
Mark:

This Allen Ginsberg is classic.
Avatar 7:28am
Jan Fallada:

A nice way to discover brand new and older contemporary classical music in a live setting is by scrolling through this blog: 5against4.com with a lot of recordings made during the BBC Proms or The Huddersfiels Contemporary Music Festival. Check for instance The Golden Age of the Radiophonic Workshop, composed by Nicole Lizée and performed by Kronos Quartet.
  7:29am
marmalade kitty:

I would be handy and great if DJ's were to include the year of track recordings in the playlist where appropriate. just a thought :)
Avatar 7:29am
TDK60:

A raucous atmosphere at that Ginsberg reading! Answer to DJ query: I like classical, from Bach going back to ancient, and from about Debussy going forward. I'm turned off by "public radio" which focuses on everything between Bach and Debussy. Faves = Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Lou Harrison, Vaughan Williams, Colin McPhee, Steve Reich.
  7:31am
Emile:

wow this thing is awesome
Avatar 7:35am
pierre:

@ TDK60 : reading you, I feel like my tastes in classical music aren't super cool. You make me wanna listen to what you mentioned. What do you mean by Bach going back to ancient ? any inputs ? Or name I could turn my ears to ?

I forgot to include Olivier Messiaen and Steve Reich, yeah
  7:36am
adrian in mpls:

This is soooo goooood
Avatar 7:40am
TDK60:

Pierre: Nothing in particular. It's just the music that U.S. "public radio" plays less. So, Baroque and going back in time through 1600s, through Renaissance, back to polyphony; things like Perotin. A help?
  7:41am
mary:

love waking up to Ginsberg's America...and it continues to be great.

For "classical" at FMU. I often go to Bethany's archive playlists and listen... Her shows are Stochastic Hit Parade and the A440
Avatar 7:42am
TDK60:

Bethany's classical show on WFMU is great because she plays a lot of modern/post-modern stuff you don't hear much on "public radio".
Avatar 7:44am
TDK60:

Oh yeah, Scott! Don't shop tomorrow! Fuses with protests against racist cop brutality in "America". Today, recall Native Americans still struggle for dignity.

I love it when Mingus talks about stuff!
  7:54am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Thinking about music, politics and culture in the USA 2014 - where, if anywhere, are the Archie Shepps, Mingus's and Curtis Mayfields of today??
  7:57am
mary:

yes:TDK60 Today, recall Native Americans still struggle for dignity.

I always politely decline the Thanksgiving dinners in acknowledgement.'I have plans". Then take the day to sleep late , read, go to Film Forum... do stuff I like... could be a lazy day. Or go into writing something today bec I am following an idea.
yay Mingus. am old enough- as a kid to have heard him w band live playing on the Jazzmobile uptown Riverside park or central park
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58am
Scott McDowell:

Excellent question
  8:00am
Jared:

I agree TDK60 that Bethany had a great show. It feels like a loss not having her on now.
Avatar 8:03am
TDK60:

Other newer artists I've discovered: Pauline Oliveros, Gavin Bryars. Thinking of Mingus and Ellington, such jazz is sort of classical art music too. Jared: I didn't realize Bethany's show was canceled! Waaaaaaahhhhhh!
Avatar 8:05am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- tuned in overnight - great waking up to this Rally.
...Since Bethany Ryker's Stochastic 440 is gone again - by all means play 'Classical'. Despite having 31 streams bookmarked in an iTunes folder called 'Classical' - not one will do for the genre what she does, despite a few good Early/Baroque ones; just like having 34 continuous streams of 'Punk' *not one* will do what FMU's 'Distort Jersey City' did in one hour/week...
Avatar 8:12am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Who is it in the movie rush says comparing FMU to other stations is like comparing National Geographic to People?? Bingo! Turkey leg & the squishiest stuffing to that guy! ...FMU only *looks* like Mad Magazine...
Avatar 8:20am
TDK60:

Is there some way we can get Bethany onto one of the WFMU alternate streams?
Avatar 8:23am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How mush more would it cost to fill the Drummer stream schedule right up? It's already there 24/7. It would drive us mad w/ timeslot conflicts, but a good problem to have...
Avatar 8:26am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mush!...It would be kewl if Archive players just played episode after episode of a program: that'd effectively be a stream. Not that I use archives really - because there's too much else going on! I may need to if I wanna hear JoeBelock though...
  8:27am

great show!!

T.L. sounded a bit silly-sexist too with that goddess rap. Good background tunes -- early Country Joe & The Fish, Fab 4, mentioned Jefferson Airplane. I actually saw Leary do a multi-media show at the Village Theater before it was Fillmore East. It was very wild for the time--multiple film images, music, talk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am

..Leary *did* become like the slick Disney or Hefner of acid...but also some really useful thinking like 'set & setting'
...Probably most around here will dig the Early & the Modern stuff & the tasty dramatic East European stuff, & skip the respectable Romantic stuff in the middle - but people like Bethany can show that those guys too are about much more than their three 'Hits'...
