Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 3:22am Caryn:

The cover for this single is one of the most literal record covers ever.
  Thu. 10/9/14 3:23am Zohra:

It's great - but Mr.Protractor and Ms.Abacus were plenty sad
  Thu. 10/9/14 3:25am Zohra:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 3:25am Julie:

Yes Caryn, I remember that picture!

I never saw past the beauty to even think whether her voice was strange. Beauty *is* strange. Strange beauty, beauty strange ..

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 3:29am Julie:

aw damn I really gotta go look at the moon! (waits for a long song)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/9/14 3:31am Ken From Hyde Park:

The moon is big and round up in the sky now. Shining though wispy clouds here.

Now tell me the vocal isn't perfectly appropriate on Sat in Your Lap
  Thu. 10/9/14 3:37am Zohra:

I am going to keep listening as I prepare for dreeeeeammtime. I have a videoshoot in the morning otherwise I'd be typing away until next Wednesday. XO

Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 3:56am Roberto:

My high school English teacher played us the Pet Benatar version in class when we were reading WH. She wasn't aware it was a Kate song but a student filled her in. That was my first time hearing of Kate.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 3:59am listeningcat:

Well known that the music you get into at 14 or so stays deep within you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:00am Julie:

I got the next two albums pretty quickly after but still that one gets to me the most
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:12am listeningcat:

I can see that Kate's music is too English for most US tastes
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:13am Julie:

what makes it English?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:15am listeningcat:

Climate, history, understatement, the particular beauty of the English countryside, small scale, detail, spaces between things .. maybe
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:16am Julie:

not sure I've picked up on climate in that much of Kate's work
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:17am Caryn:

The good thing about Kate's music is that it completely distorts my view of time. Like now, the show's been on for an hour & 15 minutes, but I feel like I've been floating along with the songs for hours and hours
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:17am listeningcat:

:|
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:18am Julie:

hmm is that a good thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:19am Caryn:

What, "Cloudbusting" wasn't about climate?

Heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:21am Julie:

sometimes the snow is sat in your lap
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:21am Caryn:

Yes, Julie, it is a good thing. Because it always feels like you're getting more bang for your buck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:22am Julie:

cool!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:23am Sem Chumbo:

Oh, this is just a very fine thing, doubt very much if Joyce heard this in his head when he wrote it:-)
  Thu. 10/9/14 4:26am Meghan:

Morning all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:26am Julie:

morning Meghan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:28am fred:

@Sem: I don't know, but that song made me read Ulysses, many years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:29am Julie:

wow Fred that's so cool I hear that book is a slog
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:30am Caryn:

Okay, Julie's Kate Bush impersonation is now one of my all-time great WFMU moments.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:35am listeningcat:

re. climate, Kate must have spent many a rainy Sunday afternoon indoors at the piano as a child. Rain does mould the British personality I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:35am Julie:

I think that was probably Zohra. I did do one but I think I cut it
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:36am Sem Chumbo:

@fred: a major undertaking! Joyce is famously quoted re: the book's depth and insistent obscurity:"It took me nineteen years to write, it should take 19 years to read."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:37am Caryn:

"Ulysses" is fine. "Finnegan's Wake" on the other hand? Oy.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:40am pierre:

Kate has always been my childhood fantasy, therefor not only I love her music but I also associate her with a sweet and delicate erotism.
(Way too personal info, but yeah, since it's a Kate Bush thing today)

Bonjour Julie and Darkies
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:42am Julie:

hey there pierre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/9/14 4:43am Ken From Hyde Park:

The college radio station where I lived in 1985 had this (Running Up That Hill) in heavy rotation.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:44am listeningcat:

Are we doing the movements to this?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:44am Sem Chumbo:

Hey, pierre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:45am Caryn:

I was going to write this while you were discussing it on air, but I actually think that "Running Up That Hill" is a very catchy, poppy song in many ways, so I'm not surprised it was such a big hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:45am Caryn:

@listeningcat: I feel like I need a mask and a partner to do the movements properly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:47am Julie:

yes we're dancing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/9/14 4:48am Ken From Hyde Park:

100% Whatever had covers of Wuthering Heights about a month ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:49am Julie:

of course she did!
  Thu. 10/9/14 4:50am Nick:

I don't know if you have seen this, Julie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJbjAwvRWLs

Possibly doesn't make very much sense if you've never watched Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan's greatest creation), but as a big fan of both Alan and Kate, it's something I find myself watching a lot even if I'm not sure it treats the material with the respect it deserves ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:51am Julie:

Love Coogan but have yet to check it out actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 4:53am Caryn:

Coogan doing a Kate Bush medley for Comic Relief, Noel Fielding doing the "Wuthering Heights" dance for Sports Relief... Kate seems to be the go-to for a lot of great British comedians.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:53am listeningcat:

Did you see AP in the BBC Kate documentary, telling how Kate came up to him afterwards and said "it was nice to hear all those old songs again Alan". Later in the doc he also made a wry face about the line in "Wow" - "We'd give you a part, my love, But you'd have to play the fool".
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 4:56am listeningcat:

Damn! He'd hate me for that, SC not AP :,(
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:02am Julie:

there are videos of people chicken dancing to kate
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:02am Caryn:

@listeningcat: I haven't seen to doc. Did he do those moments in character as AP, or just as himself? Because if he was in character, you have nothing to worry about.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:04am listeningcat:

Julie, you should so have to go to England again, Kate is ours!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:05am listeningcat:

Caryn: Himself, I'm a marked man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:05am Julie:

Hey any excuse to go to England!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:07am listeningcat:

The doc is a must-see, I don't know how for you American cats. Someone put it on YouTube but it got removed.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:09am listeningcat:

Plenty of US acts we are desperate to see who never come over. Even some British ones (King Crimson)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:11am Caryn:

Oh dear, listeningcat...

But here's hoping that doc shows up on our channels at some point.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:12am listeningcat:

SWIM could send you a copy ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:15am Caryn:

SWIM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:16am Julie:

you will have to swim to get a copy
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:16am Matt from Springfield:

Welcome back Julie!

Right as you come back from Europe, I'm going over on Saturday! :)
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:17am listeningcat:

Someone Who Isn't Me ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:17am Julie:

ah lucky you Matt, where you going?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:18am listeningcat:

For legal reasons it's obviously not me I'm talking about ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:20am Caryn:

My love for "This Woman's Work" is added to by my love for the video. Mainly the work of Tim McInnerny, because I love that man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:20am Julie:

it doesn't do that much for me, I'm afraid. it was alix's pick
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:20am Matt from Springfield:

POLAND! And Germany after that! Poland is the official business, unusually, Germany is a week after that. I'll try to comment from o'er there!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:21am listeningcat:

£250k has just been raised by crowdfunding to get Foo Fighters To Play Cornwall, what's it worth for Kate to cross the pond (but ha ha she can't be bought)?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:23am Matt from Springfield:

Morning everyone else! Listeningcat, Caryn!

Caryn: I also like the video; I pointed out the ambiguity whether Kate's character makes it through. We think she does, as the nurse talks to the husband and a look of relief, but the last shot is Kate the performer closing the "fold" of the piano, like closing a coffin lid? Anyway I like that unclear effect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:24am Julie:

on a different note can we talk about the amazing artwork on the Never For Ever cover?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:24am listeningcat:

The usual interpretation is she doesn't survive FWIW
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:24am Matt from Springfield:

"Sat In Your Lap"! Great percussion, this has been sampled into a few other songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/9/14 5:24am Ken From Hyde Park:

Trivia Quiz: Did Futurama ever have Kate Bush's head in any episode?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:24am Julie:

really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:25am Julie:

this song isn't long enough
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:26am listeningcat:

NFE artwork is Kate doing what she's best at, doing something nobody else could get away with.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:26am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: BSI/Turnip Druid pointed it out - Scott W played one song that had some samples and he mentioned another with the backing track worked in.

@Ken HP: I don't know! They SHOULD have!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:26am listeningcat:

It's long enough if you do the movements
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:27am Caryn:

That cover is fantastic, Julie. And really showcases her love of Arthur Rackham.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:27am Julie:

it's kinda terry gilliam
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:28am Matt from Springfield:

Nice artwork! I'm glad she had that cover in 1980, brought back a more psych/prog 60s/70s album cover for that time.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:28am listeningcat:

It's got birds
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:29am Julie:

as a kid I was disappointed there was no pretty picture but now I love it. And you need the record to appreciate it
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:29am listeningcat:

You didn't find that pretty?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:30am Julie:

Well it's a drawing, I didn't appreciate it as a kid. Like the british TKI cover
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:31am Matt from Springfield:

I found the US EP "Kate Bush" at a record store around here. That cover is from her "Babooshka" video:
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:32am Julie:

Yes I have that too, I think there were two different versions, one with an extra track. French stuff!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:33am listeningcat:

It *is* rather brown I suppose
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:34am Matt from Springfield:

Wow, intense song! I really need to check out The Dreaming!
(Goes w/o saying, eh Julie? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:34am Caryn:

I've always preferred the UK to the US version of the TKI cover. Although the naturalness of the Japanese TKI cover appeals to me most of all, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:35am DeaconDave:

Julie! Good Morning!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:36am listeningcat:

Just looking at Kate being a bat on the reverse sleeve, she's always wanting to fly
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:37am Julie:

morning Deacon
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:37am Matt from Springfield:

"Kashka"! THAT is a progressive song - prob the first major Western release to detail a gay Arab couple, and positively!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:37am listeningcat:

Funny packaging the same music in different ways for different cultures, suggests they won't hear the same thing, which of course is true for all of us #deep
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:38am Caryn:

@listeningcat: hey, there's even 2 different US covers for TKI, so it's packaging the same music for the same culture in different ways.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:39am Matt from Springfield:

Most def! re: Paddy -- he was big on playing diff instruments, esp. stringed ones like mandolin, balalaika or vaguely folk ones.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:41am Matt from Springfield:

WOW! Roy Harper contributed vocals to Never For Ever! I wonder which track? The chorus at the end of "Breathing" maybe. Have to listen for him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/9/14 5:42am Ken From Hyde Park:

Will there be any Syd Barrett / Kate Bush mash-ups tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:42am Caryn:

@Matt: yep, he's on "Breathing".
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:43am listeningcat:

Caryn: If I ever release an album (unlikely), I'll definitely have a choice of at least 10 covers aimed at different tribes!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:43am Matt from Springfield:

Is that Paddy in the photo? He reminds me of Freddy Mercury! (Appropos mention for this Eastern themed song :) Nice photog by brother John.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:45am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Caryn!

Speaking of the "progressiveness" of "Kashka", I'm also reminded of Van Morrison's epic "Madame George" from '68 - very forward thinking to have a deeply sympathetic portrayal of a cross-dressing Irish drug dealer! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:46am Julie:

I would assume that is Paddy
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:46am listeningcat:

There's definitely a "way in" to music, that's what covers try to offer simplistically I guess. Once through the door, the complexity of the scene opens up for you to explore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:48am Caryn:

@Matt: And Rod Stewart had his "The Killing of Georgie (part I &II)" in 1976.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:49am Caryn:

Paddy is like a cross between 80s Freddie Mercury and the guy who does the choreography for Sia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:49am Julie:

killing of george is awesome!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:50am Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: You're right - that was another great statement, and great song.

I've learnt a bit of Polish for my trip - is that one of your many familiar languages? It's interesting for being the most like Russian of the West Slavic langs. And a Roman alphabet that was not applied very well to their words! ;)

@Matt: only a bit. I was friends with a Polish mathematician's daughter in jr high. Occasionally the Polish/Russian closeness confuses me. Like the word "street" is "ulika" in one, "ulitsa" in the other, and I occasionally forget which is which.

Typically, I avoid cliché like the plague, but I am Bushed big time.
I missed KB the first time around but now have had a glimpse of what I have missed. Thanks, Julie, for a flying overview of an artist for whom I will make much more time. ahead. Much appreciated.

Jak jest twój polski, @Matt?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:53am Matt from Springfield:

Ha, Sia's choreographer looks like that as well? That look just might be coming back! ;)
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:55am Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: The good thing about Slavics is many words are the same across all the langs, but our familiar "tr" sound going into "tshe" but still spelled tr is confusing! And I know what you mean about those little diffs. My *guess* would be "ulitsa" Russki and "ulika" Polski, but I could be wrong!

Thanks for doing this Julie, I loved this show

Very much enjoyed the show tonight. Thanks for putting this together. The heck with sleep!

Anyone think of any other artists who have been been quite as huge as Kate is in Britain while being "not got" in the US?
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:55am Matt from Springfield:

Tak, Sem! :)

Good morning! Have you ever been there? I'm the first person I know to visit there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:56am Caryn:

@Matt: yep, you got it right. I remember which way it is if I think of them in written form, but if I hear the word, I need to think for a bit.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:56am Matt from Springfield:

Of course one of Azar's "Kate-y" songs! Although several artists have done "Kate-y" songs over the years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:57am Julie:

thanks for listening, guys! Pledddge!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:57am listeningcat:

That was so Kate-y it fooled me!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:58am listeningcat:

Thanks Julie, you've got taste.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:58am Sem Chumbo:

@the Matt: nearest I've been is Hungary. Memorized some *politeness* phrases, but did not have a clue about the language otherwise. Three weeks at a health spa in the Danube...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 5:59am Caryn:

@listeningcat: hmm, can't think of any with such a long career. Certainly there's plenty of acts that have been huge for a while at least in the UK, but are either virtually unknown or have smaller, cult followings in the US. But as long-standing artists as Kate? Not to my mind.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 5:59am Sem Chumbo:

@listening cat: hilarious!
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 6:00am Matt from Springfield:

@the Sem: Cool. Hungarian is it's own breed of lang, not familiar with it but would like to be if I visit - many great Central Euro areas to see!

Buda AND Pest, see both of them!
@listeningcat: Ah, you reminded me of that! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/9/14 6:00am Caryn:

Ooh, Sem, I think I've read about that spa in a magazine.

And my hovercraft is full of eels.
Avatar Thu. 10/9/14 6:00am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for bringing us Kate and these other Heavy People, Julie!
Have a great Thursday, everyone! :)

Thanks Julie.

My grandma was one of the heads of the Finnish-Hungarian Society. She speaks fluent Hungarian. I haven't picked up any of it from her, though. Apart from some food terminology. :(
