Those curtains! Unbelievable!

That could only work if the beef cattle were themselves vegetarians. (i.e. these burgers are made from vegetarians.) But this is no longer the case. They're fed body parts as a matter of course.

@ Michael: And at those prices!

Couldn't believe I found that place. It's CURTAINS HEAVEN! I love curtains more than I love cake. Gimme the curtains! I'd punch someone in the head for some curtains.

This Elf Power is good. Ever heard of The Serpent Power? What are other Power bands? Kat Power. The Power station.

It's curtains for you.

Alison Porchnik:

I can't believe I missed that. I love that clip more than I love cake. Well, not really. I love cake more than I love many things, except pie.
  3:15pm
Laura L:

Thank god there's a curtain for every season there. This time of year the mind naturally turns to curtains.

About this show's article of faith, I wonder if Henry the Human Fly received heavy airplay on WFMU.

True but upsetting: one of the remaining majors has digitized tapes they had in vaults, but they have no idea what's in there because the tape labels were lost. Someone's dream job might be in there

Does Venetian refer to Venice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
fred:

@rrg: I'm talking about what is now Universal, and they wish they knew the vintage. Thing is, they got all these tape vaults through mergers, and either lost the labels or the labels had codes for sessions whose meaning was lost. They asked the place I work for help in narrowing the search, because they think there's untapped money in there. Did you think they were out for anything else?

The new manager said "who cares about that old stuff anyway?". Years later, the bigwigs realize they're sitting on a gold mine, but the knowledge was smartsized away

Irwin: Think you'll do a video show sometime, like the nifty one Ken did earlier today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Irwin:

Listening: I'm not inclined to make that much effort. Ken has extraordinary stamina. I'm relatively effete.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Sem Chumbo:

ef·fete
adjective \e-ˈfēt, i-\

: lacking strength, courage, or spirit

: resembling a woman
Full Definition of EFFETE
1
: no longer fertile
2
a : having lost character, vitality, or strength <the effete monarchies … of feudal Europe — G. M. Trevelyan>
b : marked by weakness or decadence <the effete East>
c : soft or delicate from or as if from a pampered existence <peddled … trendy tweeds to effete Easterners — William Helmer> <effete tenderfeet>; also : characteristic of an effete person <a wool scarf … a bit effete on an outdoorsman — Nelson Bryant>
  3:58pm
Listening Out There:

@fred: If the Codger has the stamina, that could be entertaining!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
fred:

@Irwin: I think your usage of effete is adequate. I'm not much of a reference though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Irwin:

OK, thanks. Yes, used correctly.
  4:01pm
Listening Out There:

RE "effete" usage: Let's not forgot Spiro Agnew. From Wikipedia: He once described a group of opponents as "an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
fred:

@Sem Chumbo: my inner logician takes issue with the definition "characteristic of an effete person". That's not helping much

7 is Rummy Delbarton's number. I think the Codge's # is 6. He announced it once and I wrote it down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Irwin:

Thanks to rrg for the Gramps.
  4:11pm
Dean:

@fred: Your inner logician's gag reflex is too sensitive. That seemingly redundant definition is actually doing good service by incorporating all of the foregoing meanings, but applying them to inanimate objects as if they were persons. Thus, you would never literally say a wool scarf has lost character or vitality, but figuratively you might.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
fred:

@Dean: I think anyone who could understand the definition and the language would understand the figurative usage. And I think anyone who didn't understand the figurative concept would not be helped by that definition. But now you're making my inner logician come out as Wittgensteinian as well

  4:31pm
Dean:

@fred: Dictionaries and Wittgenstein. If that were the name of a bar, I'd frequent it. Ah, but the dictionary isn't simply giving readers the license to use the term figuratively. I assume that the principle underlying the dictionary is descriptive, i.e., the definition is based on empirical evidence (the Bryant quote) as to how the word is actually used. Even if an average reader would intuitively treat the word metaphorically, the dictionary informs us that the metaphorical quality has deadened somewhat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
fred:

@Alison Porchnik: That struck me too, but then I caught myself thinking why I thought that would be derogatory. Come to think of it, it's not
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:35pm

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
chris:

The Nice is a very aptly named group
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
fred:

@Dean: in that sense, I could agree with you; I think dictionaries carry a prescriptive baggage, but that looks irrelevant. Now if you can tell me where that Dictionaries and Wittgenstein bar is located and I can make it there on my constrained budget, drinks are on me until we both agree or don't remember what we were disagreeing about

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
fred:

@Lizardner Dave: sorry, I've always thought of running as my fave martial art, it doesn't apply to everybody. (I'm French, this might explain)
  4:48pm
Dean:

@chris: Yes, I almost used the word "connotation" myself. But I don't think it's right in this context. The dictionary isn't informing readers that they might want to register a connotation of "effete" applicable to material substances rather than persons -- this is part of fred's complaint -- but that the literature (the basis for the dictionary's choice of words and entries pertaining to them: books, articles, news, pop culture, etc.) warrants mentioning that "effete" is used in this way, likely to the extent that what was once a clearly metaphorical sense (feeding off negative connotations of the word) is now not so clearly so.

@fred: But what does it mean to agree or disagree? I think I know: It's a reason to buy rounds at a bar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
rrg:

It's always surprised me how evocative soundtracks like this are, even/especially without the cartoon in sight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
fred:

@Dean: As to your reply to chris, my actual contention is that we use words this way all the time, whether sanctioned by a dictionary or not. My position is that if you are familiar with that usage, the definition is redundant. If you are not, it's useless if not misleading in making it an exception.
And as for your second point, if something isn't worth buying a round, it's not anything at all. It's "I drink to it, therefore it is".
