Favoriting August 26, 2014: To Insure Prompt Service: Tips on Tipping

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Ever had someone come right out and ask you for a tip? It happened to me, on a limo ride from my house to LaGuardia Airport this past Wednesday. It was the worst experience I've had in a hired vehicle and the driver still managed to ask me for a little something extra on top.

I consider myself a decent tipper. The service has to be truly awful for me to tip less than twenty percent. Even then I only go down to fifteen percent. People work hard and everyone has a bad day now and then. But I couldn't bring myself to give the limo driver even that much. Tune in tonight to hear what I DID give him. And please call 201-209-WFMU to share YOUR tipping philosophy and tipping stories.

Has anyone ever DEMANDED a tip from you? Ever refuse a tip? Did you ever work for tips? And how much do you tip a waiter, a bellhop, a hotel maid, a limo driver, etc.?

Most importantly: what do you think of two recent tipping trends, the tip jar and the automatic gratuity? Retail businesses that never solicited tips now do so regularly. Do you put something in the jar? Or do you ignore them? And do you tip on top of an automatic gratuity? Or just let it ride? Get your tipping tips tonight!

My family missed our flight to New Orleans a few months ago...first time that's happened to me. Luckily there was another flight leaving 15minutes later, so we still had time to catch the connecting flight.

That's they way I've preferred to fly for many years. One shoulder bag, no checked luggage, no waiting a
t the carousel, no lugging a ton of shit.

Once while we were dating, I drove my wife to Laguardia, then got a phone call from her on my way home that her flight was at JFK, so I turned around and we made it through a ridiculous/typical amount of traffic in the nick of time.

gotta love the Hanna-Barbera "skidding" sound effect, sounds just like Fred Flintstone getting pulled over for speeding...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm

very strange that this morning I drove in (usually take the bus) and my instinct was telling me to drive up the pabt ramp...cuz that's were the bus always takes me and I was a bit zoned out and driving on instinct. I wasn't dumb enough to do it, though.

writers of romance novels (or erotic fiction) set in the 17-19th centuries do still use the word "chambermaid"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
mariano:

@P-90: I remember years ago, at the house of a girl I was dating, looking in one of her kitchen drawers for something or other and finding a book, by Hustler Publications, called "The Whoremaster of London." Boy, was she embarrassed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
mariano:

Anyway, it involved the adventures of a chambermaid.

Chris, you have reached your tipping point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
dale:

mariano - did it start "i was a sophomore at a small midlands prep school?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
mariano:

@dale: No, it started with the chambermaid in a stage coach going to London, and how her, um, lady parts were tingling with anticipation. Several archaisms for vagina in the first page, like quim and cunny. Absolutely hilarious.
  6:50pm
listener 102365:

Not proud of it but I'll admit to have dined & dashed after some sub-sub-servuce.

@mariano Har! Funny stuff!

I remember trying to tip in Japan and it's not allowed.
  6:56pm
P-90:

Henry Miller always used "quim" for secretions from the organ, not the organ itself, I'm not sure which was the original meaning.
  6:59pm
P-90:

THAT's why those French waiters and London cabbies don't take tips: they're actually paid for their jobs.
  6:59pm
Pan Taron:

I've never dined and dashed, but I have stiffed for really bad service. With a big party, left alone for over an hour, had to go get the check myself. Someone left something there, had to go back and face angry stiffed waitress! Response to why she wasn't tipped- "you suck at what you do".
  5:26pm
ccrides:

He was probably some well sponsored foreigner who didn't even need tips and only drove a limo for some jerk that owned him..!..he might get his kicks by aggravating high strung Americans???...hehehe...who knows?...I wouldn't feel guilty, Chris!!!...hahaha...:)O(:..
