Stylish stylings. Good morning/afternoon.

Hello Pacific Standard Simon -- and all other listener OUT there!

Doug Schulkind:

My all-time favorite Jazz Messengers lineup:

Lee Morgan
Hank Mobley
Bobby Timmons
Jymie Merrit
Art Blakey

with apologies to Horace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Jeff Golick:

zat the Night in Tunisia line-up, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Doug Schulkind:

Night in Tunisia had Wayne Shorter on tenor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Doug Schulkind:

Shorter was in that configuration longer than Hank Mobley. Hank was in the group with Donald Byrd, Horace, Doug Watkins and Blakey longer. All of it is blow-your-head-right-off good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jeff Golick:

I guess Wayne'd do fine in a pinch.
  12:17pm
Jeff J:

Jeff G - sent ya a bunch of emails. Let me know when you have a sec.
  12:20pm
Jeff Golick:

Yup -- just replied!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Doug Schulkind:

This Blowin' the Blues Away LP has a tune that would be sadly appropriate for these times: "The Baghdad Blues"

<foreshadowing>We're going to hear a killer cover of this tune in the next set.</foreshadowing>

Oh man, style tags are all I see today. Just got back from a break after hours of applying XML style tags to a book MS. All text now appears naked without them. 13 more chapters to go in this half!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Doug Schulkind:

I wonder if Horace's Sister Sadie was related to Yusef's Sister Mamie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
Jeff J:

I'm thinking it takes some guts to title your song Lonely Woman in 1965. Or maybe it's a sort of homage to Ornette?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Doug Schulkind:

The earliest cover of Ornette's "Lonely Woman," was recorded in 1964, by.....

The Modern Jazz Quartet

Hey Listener James! Hope the tunes are soothing the styling woes.

Probably the last Allman Brothers track we'll showcase here for a while. Though we do like to program against our own tastes every now and again...

Yo Rogue Oats! We're a bit short handed today and got our head partially stuck under the hood of this program, so to speak. Good to see you.

Watch out for the Fahrtenmesser.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Doug Schulkind:

Funny that you earlier played Horace Silver's "St. Vitus Dance." You see, tomorrow is the 640th anniversary of a sudden outbreak, in Aachen, Germany, of the similar "St. John's Dance," which caused "people in the streets to experience hallucinations and begin to jump and twitch uncontrollably until they collapse from exhaustion."

St. John's Dance and the related St. Vitus will be celebrated on tomorrow evening's episode of Give the Drummer Some. Tune in, 6-7pm (ET) here on the Drummer Stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Jeff J:

Looking forward to that program, Doug. St. John's Dance - the very first dance craze to sweep the Continent. More contagious than the Froog... or so history books would have you believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Doug Schulkind:

Oh no, Jeff J. The froog goes back to the Primordial Ooze!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
Rich in Washington:

I still wish I had my Quad 8-Track copy of Autobahn. I keep expecting the track to switch in the middle of Kometenmelodie
  1:59pm
Dean:

Somebody needs to do a mash-up of this with "Beat on the Brat."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Jeff J:

Looking forward to the hardcover edition of THE COMPLETE LYRICS OF KRAFTWERK coming out this fall from St. Martin's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Jeff J:

Doug - Should've figured the froog went back so far. It's pure reptile brain!

Rich - Kraftwerk Quad 8 tracks, wow. You're blowing my mind. I love that existed and you were savvy enough to own a copy.

Dean - Great idea. Let it be so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Doug Schulkind:

I think Reptile Brain's version of The Froog is my favorite. The beat is so subtle, so... implied.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Uncle Michael:

How long would it take to play all the Modern Lovers' studio versions of Roadrunner?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm

Uncle Michael: I'm in for however long it takes.
  2:14pm
Dean:

What was that Ric Ocasek band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm

When did you guys sneak in and steal my record collection?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm

I'll settle for Hank Williams' Cadillac.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Jeff Schulkind:

@pacific standard simon
We'll give it back, no worries. And hey, the Jack Daniels stains on the record jackets only add character!
  2:21pm

Carl Perkins' Cadillac, too.

And of course I should include Tony's Tape Hiss as another player of the full recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm

Speaking of Tape Hiss, Tony Coulter's program tomorrow (12-3pm, ET) will feature rare, unheard cassettes from these fine purveyors of aesthetic excellence: Volkswhale, Glorious Moodmen, Kopf/Kurz, & Metabolist!.

Tape Hiss shows are not archived, so you must tune in during the broadcast to hear it!

Perry Robinson is playing something called an electric clarinet on this album. I wonder what that is, exactly.
  2:51pm
