lloyd michigan:

50 years ago this week, David Bowie (Davie Jones and the King Bees) released his first single: Little Liza Jane.
  11:06am
lloyd michigan:

Technically, it was "Liza Jane."

Somehow, I got through that whole Mary Hartman era without ever actually hearing this record, though I'd heard it mentioned many times.

I notice that very few Knack songs get much airplay. Good to hear them today.

"Good"?

I think something happened to the transmitter. I was listening to Bob's show loud and clear and then suddenly nothing but static. I checked about 15 minutes ago and I still heard the static. Given how the clear the sound, I don't think it's my stereo.

Only ever owned one Huey Smith LP. It was a British release called "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu" and it was decorated with a Bosch painting of peasants dying of the plague. I liked it.

I think the Strypes are a good band, and I'm glad they're doing well, but really...what's the point?
Avatar 12:15pm
Michael Shelley:

Are you asking What's the point of a good Rock And Roll band? A band that writes great songs & covers great songs?
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 12:18pm
Jimmy Wipper:

Their originals aren't bad, but it seems like every cover they do is really obvious and unoriginal.

But your favorite band is Southern Blend!

Point taken. But they at least play "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" with a kazoo.

I checked in earlier to see a lively discussion on house painting, tipping, etc. but didn't see anything. I'm a little curious because I'm getting ready to paint my own house. Having termite repair next week.

Oh, and enjoying your show (as always). It's become an important part of my weekend routine! Thank you!

ChrisB.:

Yes. Michael, tip housepainters. A sawbuck apiece, at least. $20 if they're doing a big job.
  12:27pm
Greg From Brooklyn:

No. I would not tip house painters.
Would definitely offer cold drinks, access to the WC, a comfortable spot to eat lunch etc...
  12:35pm
rw:

I haven't hired a painter yet, but I'm guessing I wouldn't tip if the painter is independent. A crew hired by a company, maybe. Would definitely offer coffee, probably lunch, beer.

I don't know about painters, but be sure to tip your Chinese food delivery boy!
  12:41pm
Elias:

They'll do a better job if you've bought them food unbidden, or what have you. Not that they will do a crummy job, but when the point comes where something could be done just a little bit nicer, they'll go the extra mile if you're cool. Pays for itself always. I've worked in many of the building trades but it's the same in any job no matter what you do.
  12:42pm
Greg From Brooklyn:

Outside in Park Slope Brooklyn, toiling in the garden. Got WFMU pumping on the outdoor speakers for all to hear...
What more do I need?!
(Maybe some lunch now)
  12:45pm
rw:

As a self employed independent contractor (photographer) I find I'm always more interested in going the extra mile for people I like. I also find that people who are willing to pay full price tend to get better rates than people looking for a discount.
  12:46pm
Elias:

Wait, what were those directions for Wreckless Eric tix? I was busily typing about painters! Name, address, phone number in body of email?
  12:51pm
rw:

This Lydia Loveless song is a little overplayed and kind of sappy, but I don't mind. It gets me every time!
  12:53pm
Bruce:

The coffee, donuts, and occasional lunch go a long way. If you think there doing a great job, let them know that goes even farther, few do that. In the end if they went up and beyond the call of duty an extra $50 is nice, chances are they're not making a lot. I still remember all the tips and niceties people have bestowed upon me and I've been in the business for 30 years
  11:30am

Mike: Have u ever played Jackie DeShannon's version of High Coin or my favorite version by the Charlatans (1967).
Thanks...Ron
