I took one of those 2-3 hour “naps” where I just woke up now. Not complaining. Hello!

The Brooklyn Kid:

Well ok talent wise you have to give some to YES for all their hits and THE WHO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
pacific standard simon:

Hello all. Finally home from work. Mr. Mandl is correct -- the term "supergroup" referred to rock groups made up of people who were already famous for being in other bands. Cream is the earliest example I can think of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
pacific standard simon:

Also, probably the beginning of the term "power trio"
Avatar 10:44pm
Droll:

Howdy pss! Can you define "famous"? I can make a list of supergroups if we can nail this down.
Avatar 10:45pm
Dave Mandl:

Evening, Jake, pss, and everyone else who I haven't said "Evening" to yet.
  10:45pm
JakeGould:

@Droll Exactly. There are a few indie “supergroups” that are really just groups.
Avatar 10:46pm
Dave Mandl:

Like everything else, the term is used recklessly now, but it was clear what a "supergroup" was in the '70s. Doesn't mean they were good!
  Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
12539:

Wikipedia says, "Cream was widely regarded as being the world's first successful supergroup," which makes me wonder - what was the world's first *failed* supergroup?
  10:49pm
The Brooklyn Kid:

To me when I hear the word "supergroup" I think of a band from the 60's or 70's that had a lot of char topping hits
I blame the dj's at the old wnew radio station up the dial
  10:49pm
JakeGould:

I barely got it. So you are saying that Ginger Baker was a musical force of his own back then, right? And what `12539` says. Bingo. Yahtzee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
pacific standard simon:

In those primitive rock 'n' roll days, I think all the members had to have at least one album out as a member of a band, and had quit said band. By that standard, Ginger Baker, was the least super of the band. Blind Faith was even more "super", as a group, because several members had already been members of "supergroups".
Avatar 10:50pm
Droll:

12539, And if you can answer that question, then we have to deal with what is super about a failed group?
  10:50pm
JakeGould:

@The Brooklyn Kid: WNEW was great. Period. You realize many WNEW DJs and their format came from WFMU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
pacific standard simon:

Ginger Baker was, hmm, a member of Graham Bond's band?
Avatar 10:51pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

Yes. With Jack Bruce, who had also been in John Mayall's band. The whole idea of "musical chairs" in rock music was not familiar to rock and pop fans, as it was to jazz fans.

  Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
12539:

In jazz, it's just the "Lead Player Trio." In rock, you need a silly name.
  10:59pm
JakeGould:

“Yes” was a supergroup. You might not like “Yes” because if some progrock indie snobbery, but that is what they are.
  10:59pm
the Brooklyn kid:

I spent a lot of years listening to wnew.
Scott Muni
Dennis Elsis
Pete Formatale
Dam Carlyle
Carol miller
  10:59pm
P-90:

pss: you got it, the scene of young professional rock musicians in London at that time was very much like the scene in New York/Chicago/Hollywood, guys jumped from one band to another and played sessions for other artists all the time.
Avatar 11:01pm
Droll:

12539, That's a good point I hadn't noticed before. Jazz band names are literal: The So-and-so Trio. So-and-so with the Whoevers. Rock names are Dada.
Avatar 11:03pm
Droll:

If the original lineup of Yes is a supergroup, what is the 19th lineup of Yes? A Super-duper-ultra-mega-group?
  11:04pm
JakeGould:

@Droll: It’s because jazz musicians get together to jam, work well together & then form a band on the spot. And most jazz musicians have a strong individual identify in addition to their band affiliations. Rock & pop bands are a bit more pretentious & self important. And if you have a solo life? Whoa! Back off! You can’t do that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
pacific standard simon:

I'm not sure what the proper term for Yes might be, but I'm pretty sure that "supergroup" in the original sense of the word, before it was corrupted by corrupt FM DJs, is NOT one correct one. Wouldn't surprise me if a whole bunch of bands, from Zeppelin to Tull to whoever headlined at an arena, got tagged as a "supergroup".
  11:06pm
JakeGould:

@PSS: Do you mean that because nowadays ‘supergroup” is far more of a conscious moniker?
  11:06pm
P-90:

Yes was definitely referred to as a "supergroup" when they formed by the time Howe and Wakeman joined;
by then the members had all distinguished themselves in other bands, though the "other band" that Squire and Anderson had proven themselves in was earlier version(s) of Yes, so it's a little convoluted
And by then it was 69, three years after Cream had formed w/much "supergroup" hoopla
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
pacific standard simon:

If "supergroup" was ever misapplied to any arena-rock band in the 70s, it strikes me as being more of advertising ploy by commercial radio DJs reading advertising copy. For my money, the definitive, if not the first, super bands were the Bloomfield, Kooper & Stills "Super Session" band, Blind Faith, and Crosby, Stills, & Nash.
Avatar 11:15pm
Droll:

The supergroups Yes and King Crimson merged to form the group Asia. Super²-group?

Ken From Hyde Park:

I was in the grocery store a couple hours ago and Rolling Stone had an article about Robin Gibb. He was big in the 70s. I didn't finish the article. Will try to see if it's online yet.
  11:20pm
P-90:

CSN (+Y!) is a great example of a textbook supergroup, Blind Faith is the classic example, the "type specimen" of the genre.
pss is right, it depends on the definition, lots of bands were made up of "previously very successful" guys. And Led Zep WAS referred to as a supergroup by the English press at the time they appeared, but right, then what about Tull and others?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
pacific standard simon:

It's starting to strike me as odd that we're chatting about this on a radio show that is "Guaranteed less than 2% rock and roll." (!)
  11:24pm
P-90:

Alao: if Clapton and Baker were veterans of another supergroup, did that make Blind Faith a super-suoergroup?
