Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 6, 2013 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I've read about that religion:

"The success of our prayers had a simple foundation. We regarded it as "Error" -- our name for Evil -- to believe the evidence of our senses and if we had influenza or consumption, or had lost our money or were unemployed, we denied the reality of these things. We said that since God could not have made them, they therefore did not exist."

No time to properly log in, but wanted to say the first version of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" I ever heard -- and performed myself -- was Joan Baez'.

UFO was in fact aired in the U.S. in the early '70s, at least in New York. If I recall correctly most of the super-futuristic action was supposed to take place in 1980. Um, yeah.

Hi Kat...thanks for the information. I haven't heard Joan do it.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm

I remember watching the UFO series on TV in ST. Louis. It was in the 1970's but it took place in the FUTURE in the 1980's. Most of the characters wore wigs, and when female personnel were stationed in the Moon Base, they would wear purple wigs. I am not making this up.

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm

"Nobody But Me" brings to mind the thinking I've been doing lately about rock and roll standards -- songs with a lot of different versions. The most prolific one, I suspect, is "Stranded in the Jungle" -- seems I hear a new one almost every week. "Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)" seems up there as well.

no, the Jay Hawks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
pacific standard simon:

Yeah, Wikipedia credits the Jay Hawks with the original, and the Cadets with the hit cover version.
Avatar 1:19pm
glenn:

"Stranded In The Jungle" was written by Ernestine Smith & James Johnson in 1956; the same year this R&B novelty classic was a huge hit for the West Coast vocal group The Cadets (Modern 994). The Cadets version of the song was actually a cover of the Jay Hawks original version, although much more polished and energized.

My dream DJ set would feature "Long Cool Woman" by The Hollies, "Jeepster" by T. Rex, "O.D.'d On Life" by Blue Oyster Cult, and any other song that used THAT riff -- it seems like THAT riff was very popular in the early '70s.

Avatar 1:39pm
kat330:

@James, et al: No one despises autotune more than I, but SOME of the reason "musicians" don't like DAWs and pro tools is because it's leveling a playing field that was only for the rarefied few who "made it" into the biz by worse illegitimate methods, such as nepotism and payola.

And back to the Baez version of "Babe..." I no longer have the vinyl -- got stolen from me -- but my guess is she DID credit Anne Bredon. She wouldn't knowingly do otherwise, and I don't think Vanguard would either.

Dominick:

Baez's version originally was credited to "traditional" as well.
Avatar 1:45pm
