Michael:

Saw the Duke/Cobbam band in college. He was quite the cool dude.

Both he and Q started in jazz, but I wonder why Duke's pop path was derided by many while Q seemed to do no wrong?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm

I picked up George's "Don't Let Go" & "Follow The Rainbow" albums before I knew anything about him. The covers looked cool and the song titles sounded great. I'm really glad I picked up the records.

Caryn:

Have yet to see the "Blurred Lines" vid. All I know is, there's some controversy for some reason. My aversion to Thicke is preventing me from being more informed.
  12:35pm
Cecile:

He was a man of the music-listening people.
Avatar 12:37pm
robyn:

@caryn i feel the same way re: "blurred lines." and then around the same time justin timberlake released his "take back the night" song and i just turned my back to both of them knowing that if i engaged massive irritation would be inevitable.
Avatar 12:38pm
Jshatan:

The hilarious thing about the Thicke video to me is that the song is so irritating that even with the...erm...*visuals* I turned it off after about a minute. How dumb does he think we are?
Avatar 12:39pm

And no satire like Robert Palmer.
Avatar 12:46pm

Yeah it's a strange one that cover. I think they must've gotten skeeved by the original goofy lyrics. It also predates the America cover

And Palmer was slammed, too. So for an artless, witless, vacant piece of playtime, Thicke should take all the sah-LAMS that come.

Can you play some of the Dan? If it works for you, that is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm

My brother-in-law is telling me to check out Island recs era Robert Palmer. I'm extremely dubious. Is it worth checking out?

Robert Palmer "Sneakin sally" is great
Avatar 12:50pm
Jshatan:

OK, you've done the George Duke tribute - when does Eydie Gorme get her due?
  12:50pm

I never warned to him, but love Addicted to Love. He has terrific taste in covers and is tasteful, so you may love it.
Avatar 12:50pm
Cheri Pi:

Duaney!
Avatar 12:51pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Sneakin' Sally through the Ally has the Meters on it, it's a great record, it's Palmer's first Island record
Avatar 12:52pm
Jshatan:

Sneaking Sally is pretty good, but doesn't top the Lee Dorsey original. Palmer in those days was very enthusiastic about a lot of great music, got great bands (Meters, etc.) to play on his records and sang pretty well. For me, his version of You Are In My System is his peak.
  12:52pm
Cecile:

He got a lot of great people royalties when they weren't cool, so I respect that about him.
  12:53pm
Cecile:

Lee Dorsey is amazing. One of my top 5 soul singers for sure. So sly.
Avatar 12:53pm
still b/p:

Mid-70s Palmer, like Give Me An inch, got regular FM play and has the nostalgia haze/appeal...can't judge objectively.
Avatar 12:54pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yes, Jeremy, Dorsey's was better, but I like his version as well. But then I'm less into the whole Ur Text thing then you are ;)
Avatar 12:55pm
still b/p:

Must catch Farmers Market before it wraps, but don't like leaving these musics.
Avatar 12:55pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

The best consistent albums Palmer did where his first four for Island, after that it was a single or so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
tim from champaign:

Cool. Thanks for the endorsements, folks. Sneakin' Sally should be pretty easy to procure in the dollar bin. I was only familiar with Addicted to Love/Power Station Palmer. Not my bag at all.

Hated the Power Station
Avatar 12:56pm
